Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Cheezy rip off blend of Star Wars and Seven Samurai
I won't say that this show is unwatchable because it does have its moments, but given the budget and the multitude of upper level actors it is just a really disappointing knockoff that tries to combine the elements of Star Wars with the plot line of Seven Samurai. The contradiction between future technology and hand to hand fight scenes is comical and constantly breaks the suspension of disbelief.
The actors mostly deliver their lines woodenly as if they can tell the plot line is farcical. Just about every scene comes across as if the actors were simply reading off a prompter in the background. I just finished watching Part One and I honestly don't know whether I will bother watching Part Two when it comes out in April. That should tell you something.
Anyone checking the ratings for this movie should probably knock of 1 or 2 points for the shills that have written multiple extravagantly favorable reviews. It's pretty easy to spot them, and several use exactly the same phrasing.
65 (2023)
Incredibly disappointing and really dumb
There are so very many things wrong with this movie, from spending most of the first half of it in lame attempts at comedy to the many, many physical errors to cheap jump scares to completely unrealistic battle scenes. Who honestly thinks a predator that chases you at full speed with the intent to eat you is going to stop and stare at you for a few minutes once it catches you? Who honestly thinks that a predator a hundred times your size hungry enough to try to eat you is going to step over two freshly killed animals half its size to chase you instead. This show literally struggles to be B-movie caliber. Such a shame. I truly don't know what they were thinking.
Silence (2016)
Turn about is fair play
It's ironic to have a film about the slaughter of Christians in Japan at about the same time the Christians were doing the same thing to just about everyone else in Europe.
Keep Breathing (2022)
An insane amount of flashbacks ruins this show
It's pretty much a typical survival theme in the first place, although fairly well done on that side of things. But I swear something north of 70% of the show is bogged down by flashbacks prior to the accident that totally destroy whatever continuity there might have been otherwise. Watch at your own peril ... I guarantee it will annoy you.
Stranger Things (2016)
Season 4 is totally stupid ... a complete letdown
This is what happens when writers run out of ideas that fit the original tone and premise of the series. The school scenes are completely unrealistic, the multiple plot lines are disconnected, and the directing is over the top. I've been a fan of this series for the first three seasons, but the 4th season is so juvenile that I don't understand what they were thinking when they made it. I watched four episodes and literally couldn't stand to watch any more of it.
Das Privileg (2022)
Horrible all the way around
Bad story, bad acting, laughable effects. My son had film and media classes in high school and majored in film production at the university, so I got to see LOTS of student films at all levels. The majority of them were better than this one. In fact, I'd say they were all at least 7 times better than this film because student films are rarely longer than 15 minutes and this piece of junk clocks in at 1 hour 47 minutes.
The Tower (2021)
I stopped watching very early in the first episode
I can handle minor plot holes and even bad writing, but letting the young female officer from the rooftop go home unattended without any kind of debriefing is so totally ridiculous that I stopped dead at that point. It would be different if the mystery surrounding her involvement was a minor plot point, but it was fundamental to the entire show. At the very least if she was unable to answer questions she would have been put under restricted observation at a medical facility. Suspended disbelief is one thing ... stupid writing is quite another.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Tolerable ... but definitely no GoT
It has mediocre acting and rather little depth compared to what we were led to believe by the pre-release hype. The book may have been great, but this production falls well short of that.
Only Murders in the Building (2021)
Enjoyable ... but who on earth thought that Selena Gomez could act?
The show is cleverly done, with comedic brilliance from Steve Martin and a light enough touch for just about everyone. But Selena Gomez is unwatchable ... her intonation is flat as roadkill and her expressions are barely any better. She is so annoying to watch that my wife refuses to watch the last two episodes. It's quite a tribute to Martin, Short, and any others who were involved in the writing that the show is as popular as it is.
Hit and Run (2021)
Great show until the final episode
My wife and really liked this show, but the final episode has so many ridiculous key actions by almost every major character that it completely ruined it for us. Key players do things that are totally out of character for both the overall plot and how they acted in previous episodes. It's like the script for the final episode was farmed out to a first year college drama class.
Plus, there is no ending. No closure for any part of the overall plotline. The show just stops. I'm really sorry I invested anything in this series.
American Horror Stories (2021)
These are simply awful ... just terrible
Most are poorly acted, but even the ones that aren't bad in that regard have terrible writing. I've watched every one of them hoping to find one decent one, but no luck. I regret every minute I spent watching this thing. I can't believe that somebody put up money for such bad scripts ... they must have simply thought they'd get their money back off the coattails of the original show.
Gunpowder Milkshake (2021)
Really disappointing. Like ... really.
I'm a big fan of all three of the female protagonists (the little girl was outstanding in My Spy) and I really wanted to like this movie, but I have to admit it was really bad. Zero plot and silly action scenes. You'll probably give it a try anyway and you might even not regret watching it, but when you're done you're very likely to agree that it was really bad.
The Hunt (2020)
This is a fun movie to watch
The movie is not meant to be taken seriously ... it's sardonic at every turn. Just sit back and enjoy Betty Gilpin devour every scene she's in. She is WAY WAY better here than in that piece of junk Tomorrow War she was just in.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Wow ... this is such an awful movie.
I love action films. I love alien films. I love future films, and time travel films. But there are so very many things wrong with this film ... ridiculous story, generally bad acting by almost everyone, overdone sound track. The list is too long and I already wasted too much time on the movie.
Seriously? The government won't send a team to head off a known apocalypse that's going to wipe out all humanity because it's not in the budget???? How can anyone get paid for writing this tripe?
Army of the Dead (2021)
How on earth did this thing get green lit for $90 million?
What were they thinking? It's just plain bad ... not funny, not even silly. The story is stupid and the acting is poor ... but how Zach Snyder gets directing gigs is beyond me.
Into the Grizzly Maze (2015)
Awful ... just awful
Incredibly fake action scenes and ridiculous plot. How anybody talked these otherwise decent actors into doing this film is beyond me.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017)
Awful ... just awful.
I'm not sure I've ever seen so much money and talent wasted on this much pure shlock. I'm not a purist in any sense of the word, and I can enjoy re-imaginings as much as anyone, but this movie was so hokey I don't know what anyone was thinking when they made it. If you insist on watching it you might enjoy certain small bits of it, but it almost certainly will leave a sour taste in your mouth.
Tremors: Shrieker Island (2020)
Awful ... just awful
It's so bad it's not even campy. Everything about it (production, acting, plot) is not even high school level. Whoever funded this thing probably thought it would be another Sharknado, but boy did they ever get conned.
The Third Day (2020)
Slow and pointless
Half the show is comprised of Jude Law overacting, and all of it plods along with one of the lamest story lines I've seen in a while. Nice production values, but all of it wasted.
Warrior Nun (2020)
Awful
I tend to like young adult shows, and I like science fiction and fantasy ones. What I don't like is silly plots and lame dialogue like this one has. I really tried to like it and suffered through four episodes, but it's a terrible blight on the genre and a complete waste of time.
Badland (2019)
Awful ... just awful
Just about everything about this movie is terrible ... the acting, the directing, the dialog. The main character is especially laughable. If somebody had told me this movie was a spoof I'd believe them, it's that bad. If it was science fiction it would be a good candidate for Mystery Science Fiction 3000. Don't watch it unless you do so with a bunch of friends and a lot of beer.
Locke & Key (2020)
Sorry, but this was just awful
I really wanted to like this show, and I'm a big fan of sci-fi and fantasy shows in general because of the wide range of scenarios they offer. I don't find it difficult to suspend disbelief for a show's general premise, and I can often enjoy shows that other fans consider ridiculous. This wasn't one of them ... not because of the premise but because of the completely implausible decisions and actions of the main characters. I found myself every five or ten minutes saying to myself "wait ... they wouldn't do that" or "that makes no sense at all" or "WTF?". There is no way to maintain immersion in the story when characters continually act and react differently than any normal person would. It's like the show runners decided to continuously flip flop between One Tree Hill and The Cabin In The Woods.
Wake Up (2019)
Simply awful
I read all the reviews, both good and bad, so I decided to see for myself. Seriously, this is a really bad movie. The dialog is juvenile, the acting is poor all the way around, and I've seen college movie projects that were better directed. Parts of it almost seem like a spoof and you can tell in the first few minutes who the culprit is simply from the screen time spent on a seemingly minor character.
There is nothing here to justify the time spent watching it, and honestly ... my standards aren't very high.
The Veil (2017)
Absolutely horrible
Ridiculous story and possibly the worst acting I've ever seen. I've seen kids on the playground stage more realistic fight scenes, and there is nothing of substance to the movie other than fight scenes. This isn't one of those movies that are so bad they have a train wreck kind of appeal ... this one is simply unwatchable.
Red Lights (2012)
Cheap, totally silly ending
The entire movie had a glass-half-empty feeling to it, but it was at least watchable. The pyrotechnics made no sense, though, and contrary to others here I saw the twist ending coming ... not because I'm so smart but simply because everything else was so excessive.
