Schwimmen (2018)
Good film about the dangers of posting videos
Simply put, the film is about two teenage girls from troubled backgrounds who seek revenge on a group of boys who take photos of one of them in a vulnerable state. They send them to everyone, so the girls decide to do the same thing to them. Their actions have unforseen (by them) consequences. The two leads Stephanie Amarell and Lisa Vicari (both of whom you might know from "Dark", seriously watch out for these two) play their parts very well and the dialogue flows naturally. There's quite a lot of hand-held shots but they work with the plot. It's a simple film that works well and doesn't go beyond what it needs to.
Margaret (2011)
Odd film but brilliant acting
There are many things wrong in the plot to this film, and you'll find them in other reviews so there's no point listing them here. There's a few subplots which never get resolved. The dialogue is brilliant in places but all over the place in others. There are major plot holes but all of this is made up by the powerhouse of acting. All the actors in this film are absolutely brilliant. That's what the 8 is for. Paquin immerses herself in this role and gives it everything she's got. Another is in it for two minutes and is still outstanding. See it for the acting but you'll be left wondering about a lot of other things.
Holmes & Watson (2018)
Bad.
This film is bad. It so bad, "bad" doesn't do it justice. No amount of words before the word "bad" would be enough. This film is so bad, other bad films are embarrassed for it. Like, if a group of bad films were sat having a nice drink in a pub garden on a warm summer's evening, and this film showed up, the evening would be ruined within seconds, and Assignment Earth along with The Room would be so disappointed, they couldn't show their heads in public for a decade. Avoid this film at all costs, unless you enjoy the pain of bad movies or are simply quite mad.
The bit with Billy Zane was funny though.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
Great parts and terrible parts
If you're looking for great special effects, brilliant CGI giant monsters fighting each other, then this is definitely the film for you. The acting is pretty good too. Now the reason I gave it a five is because the script and the story are terrible. Here (slight spoiler ahead) is an actual line from the film:
I thought it was lost
Only if you don't know where to look
I'm not kidding. It sounds like a low budget monster disaster movie made for the sci-fi channel. But hey, if you can look part the terrible dialogue, then you'll probably enjoy yourself.
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (2019)
Disappointing. Ryan Reynolds carries it to a five.
I narrowly missed the Pokémon craze, so I don't know much about the characters. But a clichéd storyline, clichéd baddies are actually goodied and goodies are actually baddies, oh the character who is dead is actually alive...on the upside the cgi is good, the Pokémon battles are fun to watch and Ryan Reynolds holds it well, but even that doesn't salvage an average film. But hey if you loved Pokémon as a kid or you are a kid who loves Pokémon chances are you'll enjoy it more than me so knock yourself out.
Unicorn Store (2017)
Decent, nice, aloof.
This film is no masterpiece. But it isn't terrible either. The acting is good by everyone and a decent directorial debut by Larson. It had some very strange moments but nothing that didn't carry the plot or seemed like filler. Have to agree with someone else that the very low scores on here could be to do with their personal oppinions on Larson. If you like slightly strange and aloof Indie films, give this one a try and you may be pleasantly surprised.
The Ring (2002)
Disappointing remake
I'll say from the outset that I might very well be biased. I saw the Japanese masterpiece several times before finally seeing this and I was very disappointed. They've removed the ESP plot which explained a lot in the original and basically replaced it with horses. Ok, so horses can tell those who are cursed and go nuts around them? Sorry, this is a bad remake. Not necessarily pointless, it could have been done a lot better. That said, it could be because a lot of what made the original was Japanese folklore and superstition, and maybe the lack of familiarity and English language helped with the suspense added to the unsettling nature of it. The acting was good though so there's one thing.
