Boardinghouse (1982)
Great for all the wrong reasons
I worked at a video store where we happened to have a copy of boardinghouse, and after laughing uncontrollably at the cover, I talked some friends into renting it. Since then, for about 4 years straight we would always rent boardinghouse on new years eve and watch it prior to the ball drop, as it became a cult tradition in our area. My favorite line has to be when one of the random men walk in and say "What is this, a harem?" and a random woman replys in a high pitched voice, "no." the mans response is just, "Well, sh*t." who can write dialogue like that? Great scenes include when the refrigerator throws food upon one of the young women, and you can see the arm stretching out of the fridge to throw yogurt at the poor actress. A truly bad movie that is a gas to watch, I would love to get a copy on tape, but 'tis hard to find.
Soul Survivors (2001)
great potential but poor execution
I won't bother going into plot details as they've already been explained in other posts. Sadly, I was a bit confused at the end of this movie, and had to come online to figure it out. I've only done that once before with Mullholland drive, but I felt that was well justified, because I was expecting David Lynch to be confusing. This was, well, crap pretty much. I know its trying to be psychological and thrilling but it fails at that. Iwasn't really scared at any one point, more so just confused. I was really looking forward to the movie because of Wes Bentley, as were some of the other viewers I see. The only thing I enjoyed about his performance was the brief glimpse of his ass and how nicely he pulls off boxer briefs, but the acting was really horrible. I though Eliza Dukshu was going to be the main lead by her placement on the box, but instead they introduce an anorexic blond with mousy hair who does well at being scared at times but seems to trot lightly as shes being chased. If she's so athletic why the hell can't she run? And it seems like she tried as hard as humanely possible to walk at night alone and look vulnerable. Even though it was a dream sequence, she should have been killed off early out of just plain stupidity on her part. I don't know what Ravens part was, other than to look eerie. Had this movie had a little tweaking, a little more character development ( so that we at least like the characters a bit more and can get somewhat attached to them) and develop a better ending, hell, then we'll have a movie. Otherwise it should have just gone the crappy teenage horror flick with more sex and gore, and maybe even some scary scenes. don't waste your time; there isn't even any good nudity.
