Falling Skies: Reborn (2015)
Season 5, Episode 10
7/10
Not THAT bad
31 August 2015
We followed this show from its beginning and there were some great episodes and then some that were only ordinary - just mailed in by the writers. The problem with this final episode is that it should have been 2 hours - so much more could have been resolved. Even the final confrontation with Pope could have had a little more depth.

At least we got to see a final episode. Look at all the series that were canceled before a final resolution could be made. "Alphas" is a great example.

Maybe the lack of imagination in writing all across the TV lines has lowered the bar for me, but I was OK with the series finale.

Contamination (1980)
5/10
It's awful - I loved it!!
29 June 2015
Being a child of the fifties, I grew up watching drek like this. The only difference I could see between this movie and something made in the fifties was the color.

I'm not sure who Luigi Cozzi is, but I am sure that he must be related to Ed Wood.

This movie was made in 1980, long after the special effects of "Plan 9 from Outer Space" should have been deep-sixed. The plot is very thin, the dialogue is embarrassing and the ending is both bad and predictable.

Having said all that, I had a great time watching it - it was on the El Rey channel which has become one of my guilty pleasure favorites. It's 90 minutes I will never get back but that's OK.

The Lost Future (2010 TV Movie)
4/10
I anticipated liking it, but.....
6 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I tend to like direct-to-video movies in this genre, I know they are made with small budgets and with a limited number of recognizable stars, but they usually have ambitious plot lines and stories which can turn quickly by introducing new adversaries, terrorizing beasts, etc. Every time "The Lost Future" approached a point where it could have become exciting or, at least thoughtful, it took the easy way out.

It could have been much better, or at least a lot more fun. The giant sloth-beast appeared at the beginning of the movie and gave some hope that there would be more special effects, but it was not to be.

Keep at it SYFY; most of your movies may not be intellectual treasures, but at least they're fun!

Falling Skies: Eight Hours (2011)
Season 1, Episode 10
Just a question
14 August 2011
I have no problem with the series other than it's just a soap opera with an invasion by extra-terrestrials as a background. I've noticed that there is really very little creature exploitation. Skitters are fairly well-conceived creatures, but we don't see enough of them.

We are constantly hoping the humans, with all of their frailties, don't become turncoats and try to save their own skins by consorting with the enemy. Enough! How about an overview of the conflict in other parts of the country - might give our boys some hope. It worked in "Independence Day"

Bottom line: from the great AL Capp character, Pogo - "We have met the enemy, and he is us".

By the way, was the final episode "Eight Hours" really a 2-hour episode, or did I miss something?

Zookeeper (2011)

Take a child along!
11 July 2011
Warning: Spoilers
If you saw the trailer for this and didn't go with a child then you got what you paid for. We took our 9-year old granddaughter and she loved it! We tried to see it through the eyes of a child and laughed with her. For those of you who complained that the CGI animals were obviously not real, or that a man rejected in love shouldn't take dating advice from zoo animals, try SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF. Kids seem to get this.

Kevin James played Kevin James - so what, he's good at it. Rosario Dawson was great and the rest of the cast seemed to fit in well.

By the way, we all thought that the scene at TGI Friday's was hilarious.

Bugs vs old-time religion!
5 July 2011
Warning: Spoilers
For about half of the movie, I wasn't too disappointed. If you watch a straight-to video movie you usually get what you pay for. Everything was OK until the not-too-subtle religious overtones made their way to the forefront of the movie. Although I am not against spirituality in appropriate doses, I hate being hit over the head with it. I can't believe the actors were delivering their lines without losing their respective lunches! I read the original book by Heinlein many years ago, and if he were around to see this drivel he would have run away screaming.

An ending with some thought would have been nice. Let's hope that ST4 will be made with one. Maybe Verhoeven will direct.

BTW, did anyone notice the name of the protester who was executed at the end?

A well made movie vs. a baseball movie
27 October 2010
OK, so it wasn't a great movie by performance standards; maybe judged differently by baseball standards.

Ruth's prominent years came in the 1920's, right after the Black Sox scandal of 1919 (brought to light in 1920). It's widely accepted that he changed the game and probably saved it.

About 2 months before his death, Babe Ruth was given a "day" at Yankee Stadium. He could barely speak to the enormous crowd who had gathered to bid farewell to a man they loved. Maybe little kids didn't gather outside his hospital room to sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame", but the prevailing feeling is that they could have.

More than an other American activity, baseball bonds generations. My dad and I spent hours watching and discussing the game; then my kids and I. Now my grandchildren and I do the same. The "Babe Ruth Story" might have been poorly scripted and acted, but it affected me emotionally when I was 10, and still does today.

The movie has many flaws, but still has lots of love to give.
