Fainaru fantajî sebun adobento chirudoren (2005)
Good action film
First off let me say I'm a die-hard fan of Final Fantasy VII. In my opinion, not only one of the best games ever created but some of the best hours of entertainment I've gotten out of any media platform. I was skeptical about Square's ability to pull off a fitting tribute in the form of a 90-minute movie. I knew if would look pretty but would the story, action and dialogue keep up? The answer would be sort of, definitely and, sadly, not at all.
The story is interesting enough but contains some pretty large holes. Not really sure why they decided to focus on certain events over others and the new characters are pretty loosely explained. For someone who had never played the game, I imagine Advent Children would be complete gibberish. Given the rich world setup by the game I'd have to say the story in the film doesn't really live up to its promise but is still passable all the same.
The dialogue is pretty much a disaster. The American vocal talent is pretty weak and some of the lines are just awful. I really don't understand how the translation could be so lame.
Fortunately, Advent Children is primarily an action movie and in that realm, the film succeeds with flying colors. True, you never get a sense of limit or gravity to what these characters can do, but I guess that's the point. The showdown with Bahumat is probably the high point of the film with the cutaway to Aerith's helping hand the most emotional moment of the film. Really some great visual feats accomplished here.
All in all I have to say I enjoyed the movie as a fan of the series. Doesn't live up to the game but is still entertaining in its own right.
Wristcutters: A Love Story (2006)
Interesting
I gotta admit. Halfway through, this film lost me. It got to feeling a little bit too quirky for its own good, a little bit too out there. The roadtrip, the weird colony, I was getting a little overwhelmed by the absurdity of it all. The "mircale" throughline didn't seem to be going anywhere either.
But then toward the end, the movie flipped a switch and everything more or less started to make sense. I usually detest "it was all a dream" conclusions but this one worked. I admire the film for the way it is able to build in so much quirky comedy to such a dark premise. The life-affirming message was also solid.

Ridiculous, out-there, funny
This movie surprised me a lot. At first glance I was like, hell no not another 300 parody and almost didn't download it but I was bored and decided to give it a go.
Cheesy effects, desert-dry humour and ridiculous setups but it all sort of works together. It has some big, genuine laughs and makes an attempt at telling jokes unlike other parodies of today. And, the girl in it is really hot, which definitely helps. Be warned: this is a low budget movie so don't expect a polished, studio production, but in some ways it works for this movie. Give it a chance, don't take it too seriously and you'll have a good time.
