Volcano: Fire on the Mountain (1997)
had me until the end
I generally have a high degree of suspension of disbelief. I can forgive poor writing and acting if its at least mildly amusing. I did find this movie at least that, mildly amusing. The acting wasn't great though there were some stand out performances, best of the worst kind of thing. The writing wasn't great but it kept me going even with the gaping holes. Until the end. They talked about pyroclastic flow and when they got to it I was speechless, for half a second. Then I yelled at the screen because it was not pyroclastic flow they were showing. Pyroclastic flow is a huge cloud of super heated air and ash rushing at extreme speed down the side of a mountain. Instead it was a lava flow, the kind that is supposed to move slowly i might add. Then they try to stop it with an avalanche. my first thought was, any snow that was going to avalanche would have fallen during the massive earthquakes affecting the area.
10,000 BC (2008)
a little to much belief suspension
I didn't find the movie supremely boring so i could give it a 3. I will have to agree with most people who dislike the movie about the acting, though i didn't mind Cliff Curtis, it was horrible. and it had a terrible script, and poor effects. I somewhat disagree on historical accuracies. Going from the concept that this god-king was a Atlantean I can see how the technology is more advanced than what some expect. It is a fairly common theory that survivors of some lost civilization did bring technology and social devices to known early civilizations around the globe. So metal working, domestication of wildlife, boats and large scale engineering projects are plausible in this scope. It is also a fairly well known theory that the sphinx as built much earlier than the pyramids and actually at about 10000bc to be exact. There are other inaccuracies though. The pyramids are fully accepted in every academic circle to have been built when they were. Since we are led to believe this is Egypt, then climate wise its off. the region wasn't a desert at the time. it is widely thought that it was more tropical. The carnivorous birds did come from S. America, sabertooth tigers and mammoths lived in northern climates, though creatures similar to them did live worldwide. The journey seemed to take over a much shorter time span than what would've been possible. The only way the geography fits is if the movie started in the mountains of Ethiopia. The bamboo can even fit this way as we cant say for sure there wasn't some form of it in the area at the time. The problem comes from there needing to be white people or even arabs there at the time. I also don't get what was with the accents. I understand why the use of English and other languages. As an American film i don't see why they couldn't use the standard English they use in other American movies. What really blew it for me though was the seeds they were given to plant. It was corn/maize, which is definitely native to the americas, and would not have been found in any form in eurasia or Africa at the time.
