Responsibility (2012)
An interesting take on post-apocalypse existence
Similar to The Road, in being a character driven piece concerning a father and son as they take up refuge in (what I assume) is an abandoned house. They share the house with the boys mother who is sick. It's an appropriately grim setup for the film. It is violent, but all the violence is implied and none is explicitly shown. It is a far more effective film because of this. The films true potential shines through in the cinematography and eerie lighting which reeks of dread and apprehension. The sound scape is also well done, although the climax sound-wise was a little lacking in the same level of tension that prevailed before it. All in all, a great university project, and hopefully all involved will move forward to even better things from this solid foundation.
The Crossroad (2010)
A dramatic short in the spirit of Run, Lola Run.
For anyone whose seen Lola, rennt; then the plot device of this short may seem quite familiar. The story revolves around a young woman finding herself at a crossroad in her life, and the film explores the situations she finds herself in when she goes in each direction. The cinematography, filmed on the independent filmmakers best camera, the Canon 7D, looks vibrant, and when it needs to be; quite dark and foreboding. The director, Clayton Orgles has put a lot of effort into creating a visually stimulating short. My personal niggles with the film must come into play (hence my 7/10 rating). All the actors involved are placed in roles that may require, amongst some more experience, some more depth to the characters. The central male character (who i will not divulge the identity of), needed to have some more depth to make him a credible villain.
However, seeing as this is a student film, all quirks aside, it is a technically accomplished, and entertaining 5 minute experience.
