The good the bad and the ugly
24 March 2019
I know there is a lot of bias concerning this movie - so I made an effort to go in clear of it and with an open mind. I have to say, it was an enjoyable movie, but sub-par for a Marvel movie.

The movie starts well, managing to build a solid backstory and an interesting mystery. It is visually stunning, with CGI surpassing earlier attempts to make characters look younger/older or "resurrecting" them.

I also liked that the film managed to bring about an unexpected twist, something rarely seen these days.

Unfortunately, Brie Larson doesn't manage to bring any discernable personality to her character. She is bland, with an extremely limited emotional range. She tries hard to adopt a badass attitude which is simply a bad fit for her overall basic personality. I'm not sure what happened.. personally I feel it was just bad casting.

By contrast, Lashana Lynch had only a handful of lines but managed to deliver more feeling and emotion in a single scene than Brie did in the entire movie. I feel like if they reversed the roles, we would've seen a much better Cap. Marvel.

The humour also felt very forced, falling short of the witty and amusing banter that Marvel has gotten us used to.

Overall, this was a Marvel flick with many of their winning ingredients, but I cannot give it more than a 6/10 simply because a lot of the good scenes were quickly ruined by cringy dialoge or forced attempts at humour.

Oblivion (I) (2013)

Biggest oversight of the decade
24 June 2014
Not sure if this was just in Europe, but this movie is one of the biggest oversights in recent years. I mean, wow! There are so many (mediocre) movies getting so much attention lately and yet I heard nothing of this movie. No trailers, no commercials, no posters, no reviews, nothing. And that's amazing seeing how this is one of the best Sci-Fi movies I've seen in a very long time.

I do understand that it is not a 'mainstream' movie, like Star Trek, Transformers or Prometheus. Movies that all got a lot of attention mainly due to their predecessors but didn't quite deserve it. Well this one actually does.

The screen writing is brilliant. Other than a few omissions here and there, everything is perfect. It keeps you guessing the entire movie and it doesn't disappoint in bringing an awesome conclusion. It also stays away from most clichés in Sci-Fi nowadays. I'm not gonna give anything away because this is the type of movie that even the slightest hint can spoil it.

Then there's the cast. I don't think I even need to mention the cast actually. Just look at it and you'll realize you are in for a treat.

After the cast you have special effects, story-telling, acting, cinematography, soundtrack... everything is top notch.

I loved every second of it and I am putting it right up there with Serenity as one the best Sci-Fi movies that did not get enough attention even though it deserved every little bit of it.

Under the Dome (2013–2015)
5/10
Just.. *shrug* "Meh..."
30 July 2013
Like many others, I have not read the book, but I understand it's quite something. A Sci-Fi story with deep psychological elements about how people react and transformed when faced with isolation, the need to survive with scarce resources or the normal social parameters they are accustomed to and so on... This movie shows none of that. It begins decent but pretty soon all the excitement that you felt shatters when face with the awful acting and even worse, the terrible casting of the movie. Most of the actors not only give robotic performances but they seem like they just don't belong. You know that chemistry that you feel when watching movies like Star Trek, Stargate , or even Battlestar Galactica? "Under the dome" is completely devoid of it. If the terrible acting doesn't turn you off that much you are still faced with bunch of bad writing and simply ridiculous scenes where people die for no apparent reason then to just make room for the story's main character to show his/her heroism or when critical situations appear for the sole purpose of giving the characters something to "do" but not really keeping the story moving.

The only reason I give the movie a 5 is because of the main plot of the dome which I think is interesting. I like the mystery behind it and would love to unravel it. But this is more of a redeeming quality of the book, not of the movie.

All in all, the only reason to watch this movie is if you really really... really want to find out how, who or what created the dome and why. Or you could just read the book as I am planning to do.

The Soloist (2009)
9/10
Very underrated
28 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I do not fully understand why this movie is so underrated. People seem to be stuck in the morality of the movie, feeling that Downey's character didn't really do what he was "supposed to". I think that it is irrelevant, the story may not unfold as people expect or want it to unfold, but it is still a powerful story. Not only as a story of one man, but as tale about how life often unfolds.

The movie revolves around the life of Steve Lopez, a journalist who, while searching for his next story, happens upon a homeless man, Nathaniel Ayers, who is playing a violin with only two strings. Lopez becomes interested in how Ayers, a very gifted musician and former Juilliard student, ended up homeless on the streets of LA. While writing his articles, Lopez starts trying to help Nathaniel to escape his life as a homeless man and to help him "become good again", as a musician.

The two become close friends, but Nathaniel, suffering from mental illness, refuses Lopez's help. All he wants to do is play music on the streets, and, in the end, he ends up helping Steve by enlightening him, spiritually with his music and his character.

This movie has some outstanding elements, most important of which are the performances and the score.

Jamie Foxx is brilliant as the schizophrenic homeless man. He manages to be convincing as man who, even down on his luck, finds happiness as he loses himself in music.

Robert Downey Jr. proves again that he is a great actor who can flawlessly portray a troubled, dramatic character.

The musical score of the movie is like a cheat. For me at least, being a lover of classical music, the score sold the movie completely. The tracks are perfectly chosen for each scene, transmitting feelings of happiness, despair, friendship and love in a way that no other genre of music ever can.

This movie is a must-see for everybody, but especially any lover of classical music.

The Fountain (2006)

A Beautiful Allegory
23 November 2010
No review I can write does justice to this film. Actually it shouldn't even be reviewed as a film, but more, like many other viewers said before me, as a poem.

It is a beautiful allegory about life, death and love, and nobody who watches it should even try to understand it as a movie with plot, characters and dialog, but more as a philosophical and emotional statement.

Nothing is perfect, but 'The Fountain' comes damn close, and the musical score is very much responsible for this achievement. Clint Mansell's music manages to transcend into more than sound, changing your very mood and perception as it beautifully completes every scene of the movie.

In my opinion, film-making is as much an art as painting or music, and every filmmaker, from screenwriters to directors and producers should strive to achieve this level of art in all movies, rather than just create another form of entertainment.

As a form of art, this film is a masterpiece.

Inception (2010)

Is this real ?
7 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
It is impossible to objectively review this movie. The very thing that makes this movie great is the fact that everybody has different perceptions about it. It's a mind game, brilliantly written from beginning to end.

Sure, everything contributed into making this movie into a hit, from acting and directing to musical score and special effects, but what I think we can all agree on is that all of it fades in comparison to the genius of the screenplay.

Even though many people don't realize it, it's beautiful too see how Nolan manages to actually put his idea behind the screenplay into real life practice. Sure, he doesn't invade your dreams to do it, but he manages to plant ideas in the viewers heads throughout the movie. Is this real? Is the dream really the dream or is the dream the reality, or the other way around? He makes you expect so many twists and turns and when the twists actually happen, you realize you weren't actually expecting them.

The ending speaks to this mostly. Many movies have used this "technique" in the past, by placing a little hint or doubt in the end that makes you think about it for days, but never like this. Everybody sees what they want to see in the end, much as it is for the characters in the movie. Some people see the children the same age and the top spinning, others see the top wobbling, but you're not really sure.

In the end, I think "Inception" could have been a low budget movie and still have the same success, because of the genius behind the writing. I hope that Nolan will continue to amaze us in the future with similar writing.

Robin Hood (2010)
8/10
Not exceptional but well written, acted and directed.
7 November 2010
At first I didn't want to comment on this movie, basically because I thought most people share my opinion. But then I noticed that it got some fairly bad criticism and bad marks, and I really couldn't understand why.

I think most people were expecting to see the classic tale of Robin Hood and his Merry Men, trying to undermine the bad King John and were disappointed when the movie went another way. However, I really liked the story behind the movie, it manages to put the Robin Hood legend into context, creating a well defined and believable story.

The screenplay was, in my opinion, really well written, most importantly because of the fact that it defines characters really well. It's not just another war movie with lots of blood and dramatic duels and deaths. It focuses a lot on history and backgrounds, setting the stage for what will probably be a pretty successful trilogy.

Another thing people seem to criticize, is the length of the movie. Well, I'm not the most patient person, and I hate it when a movie drags you on and on for an hour before you see anything remotely interesting. But this wasn't the case. I sat through the whole movie, watching every scene with interest, without getting bored by the dialogue (which tends to happen a lot with most movies lately). It managed to get me interested in the story, rather than just the action. Most of it has to do with the good writing and directing that i already mentioned.

I cannot give the movie a 10, or a 9, mostly because I reserve those marks for movies that really "get to me". Movies that, in some way, manage to leave a mark on you when you watch them. This movie, even though it's a good one, it's not one of those. So I'll give it an 8/10, mostly because it's a good story, with some great characters that manages to keep you entertained for two hours.

District 9 (2009)
10/10
Academy Award Guaranteed
4 September 2009
I think everyone went to see this movie with high expectations, mainly because of the epic Peter Jackson and Wingnut Films. Those expectations have been fulfilled and surpassed with this, first and foremost, original movie.

What strikes you ass odd at first, is the fact that the movie is filmed as a documentary, but this captures your attention very quickly, mainly because it's a totally new approach to Sci-Fi and because it makes the story much more believable. There are moments when you watch the movie and you feel that you are actually watching the news and everything is really happening in the real world.

"District 9", besides it's new technical approach, also amazed me with the story. It is not your usual sci-fi story, it is completely original. I will not go into details because i don't want to spoil it for those of you who haven't seen it already, all i can say is that the story should strike a cord in people. It adds a very dramatic human element to a very alien environment.

The acting is also great, this being the part where most sci-fi movies fail, this one manages to stay way above the floating line.

Visual effects and CGI... Well i have to say those were some of the best looking aliens i have ever seen. Apart from the fact that they are disgusting prawn-looking creatures, they are masterfully designed, with everything from motion to emotion looking exquisite and realistic. Everything else is candy for the eyes.

To sum it all up, this movie has everything we've been waiting for in a sci-fi for the last 10 years. In my opinion it should now raise the bar for all movies, not only sci-fi. A must see!

Entertainingly Stupid
23 July 2009
I am not a fan, didn't even know what Dragonball was, until I Googled it after seeing the movie. But i am certain that if i was a fan, i would have been incredibly disappointed. Not only is the plot, the characters, the action, the decor, the costumes, the effects and even the music really bad, but they actually manage to screw up the obvious intentional humor every time.

Even so, the movie did not bore or annoy me. It actually made me laugh, mainly at how bad it is, but still, it was entertaining to lose 2 hours with it on a stormy day with nothing else to do. Quoting from another person, you might really get a kick out of watching it while being hammered.

Caprica (2009–2010)
9/10
It's not Battlestar Galactica
6 May 2009
Warning: Spoilers
While this pilot has many of the BSG characteristics, it is a totally different film. It starts off in the same dark, messed up and chaotic way (that we all love) that BSG does, but it turns out to be more of a drama than a Sci-Fi.

The plot is great in my opinion, it promises to answer a lot of questions and fill in a lot of the gaps in Battlestar Galactica. If this is going where i think it is going: basically a mind of a child becoming the architect of the events in BSG, it should prove a very interesting and unique show to watch.

The acting is above average. The actors are mostly new to the movie scene, either coming from theater, supporting roles in other TV shows or brand new, but they do a really good job in portraying their characters for the first time in this pilot.

I cannot really comment on the special effects, since there weren't so many to speak of in this first part. All we got to see was an explosion and some computer generated images of Caprica, both of which i think were well done, and of course a little CGI time with a Cylon, which looked rather realistic.

I have to mention that the show does have it's flaws, especially visible to the first time viewer of the BSG universe. The biggest one i think is switching from SciFi-Drama to a more Drama-SciFi type of show.

Overall, it shows a great deal of promise. Even though it has a good start, I personally do not think it will match Battlestar Galactica, but i might be proved wrong.

Exceptional, But not for everybody
16 November 2008
First of all, i want to express my disgust for people who bash the movie because they didn't enjoy it, or didn't "get it". I accept other people's opinions, it is a free world (most of it anyway), but please stick to just stating your opinion, don't try to change how other people feel about it.

So, in my opinion, first and foremost, if you expect a movie that has drama or action that keeps you glued to your seat, this isn't for you. The plot of the movie has nothing to do with sci-fi, war time action or drama. It is a deeply philosophical movie that appeals to the reality matrix of people, trying to immerse you into some kind of a trance, where you begin to think like the author of the book, and the main character. If you are open minded enough, or a more than average philosophical person, this movie will be quite an experience for you. I know that for me, it was.

I liked it a lot mainly because of the dream/monologue scenes, because they somehow capture the essence of human thought. The doubt, the inner contradictions, the good and the bad sides of the same person. Things that most or all of us do, maybe not in a such out-of-body experience, but it does happen.

I don't want to give to much away, because half of the movie's effect on you has to do with the fact that it catches you off-guard.

Battlestar Galactica (2004–2009)
10/10
Brilliant
24 September 2008
The people that categorize Battlestar Galactica as a mediocre, or even bad Sci-Fi Series have probably seen one too many episodes of Star Trek. BSG is different in a whole set of ways from all the rest Sci-Fi movies and series, and many people don't get it.

What is different, and also brilliant about it, is that it does not focus, as most Sci-Fies do, on the fantasy world it usually creates, on action, special effects or dramatic high-tech space battles. It focuses on human emotion and psychology when faced with an Apocalypse of sorts, brought on by their own selves. It shows you the different sides of themselves that people have and the inner conflict they sometimes have.

BSG also has a unique atmosphere, dark and dramatic, realistically showing us what a future in which man kind is fighting for it's very survival, against terrible odds, would look like. You will not see hopeless situations where in the last second, a heroic act or a brilliant idea of the main character saves the day, the bad guys die and everyone is happy. Instead, you will see sacrifices, drama and many times, not so happy endings.

Also, the nemesis of the human race, the Cylons, should not be seen as a tin can that is programmed to destroy man kind. They should be seen, as the show presents them, "The Children of the human race" , man's own monsters.

It should have us all thinking about what we do in our years on this planet.

Big let-down but not horrible.
20 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I am a big fan of The Mummy and The Mummy returns, and i have to admit this sequel has let me down a lot. However, it does not deserve to be bashed so hard by people that had such high expectations from it.

First of all, yes, it is not as funny as it's predecessors, dialogues are not as original, acting is not as great, and yes, Rachel Weisz is no longer in it. In my opinion the absence of Weisz is the biggest thumbs down for the film, since everyone loved her charm and the chemistry between her and Fraser.

Still, the film has very nice man vs. so called "mummy" (which is actually an statue-like undead Chinese emperor) fights and great special effects, which makes you stay in your seat eagerly biting your nails waiting to see what happens.

In conclusion, "The Mummy 3: Tomb of The Dragon Emperor" does not have the same charm and originality of the previous "Mummies", but how can it, it is already the second sequel, but the fast paced action makes up for the lack of interesting and funny dialogue, and makes this film worth losing 2 hours of your life watching.

Challenges people to live more.
20 August 2008
When i first heard about this movie many years ago, i thought to myself this is the kind of mushy romantic movie that mostly women and young girls like to watch while eating ice-cream and sobbing. I was proved wrong when i finally saw it.

It is much more than a love story, it is a movie that actually challenges you on an emotional and psychological level. It makes you think about the phrase "Not being dead doesn't mean you are alive". Even though the acting is not at it's peak, Keanu and Charlize manage to impress by the pure emotion they seem to feel throughout the film.

"Sweet November" actually made me, at least for a while, to try and be more alive than usual.
