- DirectorKevin McKiernanStarsWilliam HartungJim McGovernKevin McKiernanA war of national liberation or a war against terrorism? Film-maker and acclaimed freelance journalist Kevin McKiernan poses this question at the outset of this stirring, provocative film shot in part by legendary cinematographer Haskell Wexler. It's all in how you define "good" and "bad." "Good Kurds" are those in Iraq: they're Saddam Hussein's victims, whom we want to help. "Bad Kurds" are those waging an armed insurrection against Turkey, an American ally: they're at the receiving end of U.S. weaponry. McKiernan went to northern Iraq to cover the revolt against Saddam Hussein. Just a few miles away, no one was covering the hidden war in Turkey. McKiernan determined he would report the story independently. 'Good Kurds, Bad Kurds' brings a sharp clarity to a complex history, while providing disturbing insight into immigration practices and U.S. foreign policy.

Among them is Jiyan's only living relative, Shérco, a twelve-year old who has also lost his family to the poison gas. While Shérco dreams of marrying her one day, Jiyan dreams of seeing flowers, a picture of which she finds on the back of a magazine. In addition to building the orphanage, Diyari brings a spark of hope and happiness to Shérco's and Jiyan's lives. However, this affair is short lived. As he leaves, the two orphans turn back to their lonely shells with very little light to look forward to - a familiar state of mind echoing throughout Halabja. - DirectorNigel BarkerStarsGary CondésTony RestaFrank BoyceFleeing persecution and torture in northern Iraq, three young Kurds, Mahmoud, Rezghar and Saman, smuggle themselves into Britain aboard a freight train. Arriving in London they register for asylum but soon experience the first blast of bureaucracy, as their papers are lost in the system. When Saman is detained in prison and the police attempt to arrest Rezghar, he flees and hides in a church where Father Michael is leading a service. So begins a lengthy standoff with the police and immigration officers as the priest offers sanctuary to both Rezghar and Mahmoud and the church becomes the focus of intense media attention. With Father Michael under siege from armed police, the Press, racist neighbors and his own superiors, tension mounts until something - or someone - threatens to break. Nigel Roffe-Barker's poignant social drama looks beyond politics to the desperate human stories behind the newspaper headlines. Boasting heartbreaking performances from Dar, Bradley and former EastEnders star Elouahabi, Asylum expertly illustrates the timeless tug-of-war between authority and refugee. And in the light of the Government's announced immigration crackdown, never has a film been more prescient and pertinent.
