The Last (2007)
B horror inspired film, really interesting take on vampires
Although this movie is not available in the US yet, a friend of mine had a free screener and I was able to catch it.
Initial reactions: the films starts off slow and is sometimes a bit hard to follow what is going on with the characters. Some things were left unexplained. You can definitely tell it was low budget, but that does not really detract from the films visuals. I love the grittiness of it, the dark locations, and how it seems to be unfolding rapidly, and I can tell it was shot in SF, totally industrial style locations.
As a horror junkie, what I liked the most about this film was that it was almost like a tribute to other B horror films, but it takes an interesting twist of its own. Like the vampire character Miklos can walk in the day and his character is a really interesting take on vampires. I love vampire films. This vampire is really suave and very subtly has the ability to manipulate the other characters, Sean and Christine. There is a great seduction scene in this film where his slave brings him home a girl and he just takes her, in the vampire sense and drinks her dry, all the while she is screaming. Oh man it sent chills up my spine, very well done.
The best part of this film is the ending: I mean they really amped it up for this last battle between the vampire and the hero. I wont spoil this because its the ending and its really cool. Great music too.
Overall this film is a B horror/thriller film with a few slow spots and could use some more character development. But its a good low budget tribute to other horror films and quite an interesting take on vampires and really fun to watch if you live in the SF bay area.
