Wicked Little Letters (2023)
All the best bits are in the trailer
This film has excellent funny trailer that makes me highly anticipated about the movie itself, I always like Olivia Coleman and Jesse Buckley's work, and I'm quite excited about their collaboration, I want to like this movie so much, but unfortunately, all the best funny bits are in the trailer, the film itself is kind of a let down and a drag, not even a good laugh, it's messy and silly with poor TV movie quality, kind of a waste of the three good main actresses, and an interesting premise.
I think the problem was the writing was not tight enough, and the directing was kind of lost as well, the saving Grace was the acting, especially Jesse Buckley.
My scores are mainly for the actresses.
Poor Things (2023)
"Poor things" is a masterpiece, but not for egotistical prude
"Poor things" is a wonderful masterpiece, but it's not for egotistical prude, you need to drop your ego and judgment, every preconceived notion and self confining idea of shame, just follow Bella's journey, be a blank slate, be her for 2.5hr, otherwise you will just going to miss the point.
There will be a lot of nudity and sexual content, but in a natural way.
Don't project too much unnecessary personal agenda on to her, the fictional character Bella is merely a mirror to reflect and point out how ridiculous we are doing to ourselves. I feel liberated, inspired, intellectually stimulating, filled with excitement and utterly entertained at the end.
Maestro (2023)
Maestro? more like "Wife of a Maestro".
Excellent hair and makeup department, some cool transition and cinematography, a okay musical scene, a lot of pointless dialogues for the vibes, choppy storytelling, pretentious and obvious shallow Oscar bait. (OK, Bradley, we know you want it really really bad, more than you want to tell a proper story or care about Bernstein, but a little less ego will be better for your film.)
Takes me a few try to finish it, and mostly is because of Carey Mulligan's performance. (my rating is mostly for her)
I don't really like or care for any of the characters (especially Bernstein), except maybe the wife, not very likable either, but her arc and development is relatively complete and relatable.
I don't understand the main character at all. Based on what the film show us, he's a very lucky and selfish narcissistic man, getting and doing whatever he wants, he doesn't really put in the effort to earn anything, he doesn't really struggle or overcome any hardship, not really. He's "gift and artistry" everyone praised, doesn't really touch or grab me either. I have no reason to tolerate this horrible person.
The frivolous performative over acting is so unreal, the chain smoking is a eyesore too, that maybe his actual habit, but can you tell me how many minutes does his hands are without cigarette during the whole movie? (besides he's using his hand to conduct, play piano, or touching someone) It's kinda ridiculous. That nasty habit probably poisoned people around him too.
I don't know much about Bernstein before, still don't know much about him and dislike him after(I know more about Felicia), to me that means this biopic failed.
Some say this is more of a romantic melodrama than by biography. Well, melodrama alright, but it's so choppy and surface level, I don't feel much of the romantic though.
