The Farewell (2019)
Most human and wonderful film
The Farewell is exactly what we need from art at this time. In an age of predominantly popcorn entertainment, superhero movies, films and television that glorify violence and moral bankruptcy, half assed remakes, fake slick surface level , storytelling aimed at the lowest common denominator and stories with disturbing underlying messages that promote intolerance ...
The Farewell is not only none of these things, it is a raw honest (and funny) celebration of humanity, truth, family, personal meaning, cultural and social survival, love, responsibility and finding the joy in life even amidst despair. This is the kind of entertainment art that we need. Mentally stimulating, emotionally moving, thought provoking, a stimulator of soul searching and community building.
We do not have access to art in the same way that prior generations did. Movies don't stay in theaters for a full year. There are not just three television channels, where the country can share a communal experience together en masse. And of course, most of our modern entertainment is not art. But I would like to encourage as many people as read this to go see this film. Let's share this experience, even if it's on a much smaller scale.
All Is True (2018)
Beautiful, sad, patient... an almost perfect film.
It has been years since a Kenneth Branagh film made me feel something in the way this does. His Hollywood success has also been accompanied by a change in directorial style and a change in his focus on storytelling ... but this film returns to what made him so great early on ... a passion for the subject material. The end result is a period film that feels actually of the period, while also fully modern. Every frame of film is like a historical painting. And the story and characters are fully expressed. Slow, patient, sad, and beautiful - this is a wonderful film with wonderful writing, acting and directing. The pacing and editing is deliberate. What some critics have considered to be slow or meandering I would call the story taking it's time and earning it's value. Highly recommended.
