Helltown (2017)
Every 'Fact' Is Phony...
Other than the fact the town was bought out, historically, nothing else is real -- two kids didn't go missing, there was no cult there, let alone 14 killed, no teenager was killeded by a bear or beast in 2016... the 'expert' CC teacher is an actor, never worked as a teacher. The list goes on...
Grace and Gravity (2018)
I Wasn't Sure I'd Like It... But I Did...
I watched this unsure after reading some reviews... but I truly enjoyed it. It's not a big-budget film, but it's quite touching and gets you thinking. Had more humor than I expected, too. The Brit vs. American angle is quite funny. It's really about a former preacher in England who's lost his faith, and an American who's a new believer -- they meet on an isolated bridge where the former is about to commit suicide. The American tries to save the Brit, but it turns out they both need saving. I felt really good when the film ended -- not the ending you expect, either. I'd say give it a shot. I'm glad I did.
Come What May (2009)
Moving, Strong for a Low Budget
For a micro-budget movie, this movie will get you thinking, and surpasses most others in quality, though the low budget does show. The story does indeed hold up, and it presents some powerful arguments - especially knowing it's based on a real moot court case by the sponsoring college. This is definitely worth a watch and it will certainly get people talking together afterward!
Courtroom dramas have historically held up as dramatic vehicles, and does so here. Camera moves are too limited, due I'm sure to the budget constraints preventing a dolly or steady-cam. But the heart that comes through this picture makes it well worth watching.
And could it be more timely, even after the election? Perhaps it is more so.
