Sachin (2017)
Brilliant Collection - Fantastic editing & direction
I have to admit. I'm a hardcore Sachin fan. As per expert reviews, the critics said you will like this movie if you are a Sachin fan. I would have to disagree. You don't have to be a fan to like this movie. Being a fan, I was apprehensive of this movie when I was entering the movie hall. Having lived through most of the major events in his cricketing life and fortunate enough to see him bat in flesh in one of those (2008, Test match vs England in Chennai just after the Mumbai attack in which he scored a 4th innings century), this movie still gives you goosebumps. It gives those wonderful and tragic events in his life. Starting from his childhood, (most of which is enacted since there is no footage of that) until the last speech, this is a ride to endear. The old video footage, at the time of Sachin's marriage with Anjali and later when his kids Sarah and Arjun are growing up, is extremely beautiful and moving. On the cricketing side, you have his captaincy stints, the match fixing scandals, the Greg Chappel episode, his rivalries with Warne & Wasim, the world cup highs and lows and the emotions that go with it, etc. This movie shows how much winning the WC meant to him. It takes you inside Sachin's life and the pressures he had to deal with, the sacrifices he and his family had to make. All in all great direction from James Erskine, great editing from Avdhesh Mohla and a gripping background score/music from AR Rehman. Do not miss it.
Bãhubali 2: The Conclusion (2017)
Hilarious piece of Junk
If this the best epic Indian movie industry can dish out, its time to contemplate where its headed. Sure. It's a huge project. The sets are great. The graphics/CGI are OK at most parts. The portrayal of animals though(Elephants, horses, bullocks etc) is cartoonish. Heck, even the trees and the leaves falling at some scenes seem artificial. Gladiator, which was released more than 10 years ago has better CGI. The story-line itself isn't so great. Most of it is taken out of Mahabharata. If you are looking for cringe moments, you got plenty. From soldiers flying around by a swing of a sword, the male chauvinistic attitudes (My favorite being appeasing angry mom/mom-in-law by giving her a grandson), the Southern flavored romance between Prabhas and Anushka with a comic sidekick used as a ploy and the best of all: elastic coconut trees slinging soldiers into the castle and they bouncing off their shields unhurt. You name it, you got it. The only saving grace in the move is Anushka Shetty. All in All, this movie is a bad advertisement to Indian cinema. This is the highest grosser of Indian Cinema of which I'm also one of the guilty contributors. I really feel ashamed now.
Ulidavaru Kandanthe (2014)
A Cinematic Breakthrough in Indian Cinema - Hats off to UK's team
Ulidavaru Kandanthe (UK) - As seen by the rest is a mind blowing experience to say the least. I will touch all aspects one by one. I was dumb struck with Lucia earlier, which incidentally was my first Kannada movie in a movie theater. It started a trend, a mission - To make Kannada movies more logical yet watchable (by the masses as well). And honestly, I still thought it'd be once in a blue moon we'd get to watch such movies in Kannada cinema. UK admirably follows its footsteps. And does really well to hold its own forte. I don't want to compare both movies, as they both are brilliant in their own ways. The aspects which made myself go gaga over UK were:
1. Acting & Direction: Every actor, big or small, seasoned or not, have provided the most natural acting skills I've seen in a movie. I attribute this to the brilliant actors themselves and the director Rakshit who had the guts to extract such natural acts from everybody despite acting himself. I really do hope he doesn't stop here and makes many more movies.
2. Cinematography & editing : Kudos to Karm Chawla and Sachin for this masterpiece. They were aided by the beautiful M'lore Udupi locales but apart from that, they have hit gold. Yes. There have been some Hollywood movie references. But the execution of these scenes were so classy that you would want to forget there were any references.
3. Music and Background Score : Ajneesh has provided a BG score which is the best for any Indian movie made till date. The songs are great, though I found a couple of them a little out of sync. But they way he is used the BG score to compliment the beautiful locales and the story is very intriguing.
4. The locale : As I already said, apart from the beautiful locales, the local dialect does grip me. I feel the soul of the moves comes from the local dialect used, which is mixed Kannada - tulu. It helps in keeping the movie very natural. And I come from North K'taka which has a very different dialect.
The climax justifies the title, though little confusing and I feel It would take more than one viewing to totally apprehend the movie.
All in all - A must watch.
