I doubt a translation can do this justice ...

Warning: Spoilers
... as so much can (and obviously does) get lost in the process.

I was surprised so many agreed to the main user_comment at the beginning, until I noticed likely none had seen the french version.

What I particularly liked is that there are various pieces of information what can figure out; like the fact the Sophie (Chiara) is hiding something, what cannot be guessed immediately. Why is even harder. Motivitations are at the core of such movies, and since some things we take for granted can lead us down the wrong path, and like a chess player having read several moves ahead, one must backtrack and start over.

Ms. Marceau surprised me - I knew her to be very pretty, but in this movie she adds a new twist. Mr. Attal is also very good - I'm not sure how easy/difficult it is to portray this - but I was hooked from the get-go.

### It's one of those movies that makes you feel very intensely, even if you can question the motives (i.e. you know that if a "femme-fatale" hits on a plain looking guy, she wants something). Should he go along with this - common sense dictates you shouldn't but there are times in a person's life where you are not ready to make the right decision or don't care to - not realizing how serious the situation can become. ###

All in all, a very enjoyable movie for those tired of CGI, or totally unrealistic movie story lines.

Keep 'em coming,

JM.

A true testament to quality film-making ...
5 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
... of which I was reminded every time I popped in the VHS Cassette - and as recently as yesterday the DVD. You start in a relax state, and the first thing you know you are thoroughly engrossed in it. There's no turning back. Nothing grates in terms of the storyline - the acting is so solid - even if you hit the pause/button - you are hard pressed the imagine they are "faking". Anyone wandering around sat for a few minutes, got involved and never left their seats ... For me the revelation was Tim Roth & Brian Cox, amazing ! Jessica has long since left her corny KingKong image behind. All the others were as good as the best roles before or since (from what I had seen of them). For those that joined the viewing the final sword-fight (makes it sound like there are many - NOT) left them breathless and squirming uneasily in the seats. There is just enough light humour to balance in incredible grittiness of the epoch. Mature and unassuming, no 1 man vs 10 (like some over-the-top kung fu movies), it's one on one, mano a mano. A top 10 candidate for sure. Enjoy - they make so few of those.

JM.

PS: (notice I bypassed comparison with Braveheart / First Knight, there is none, they may be good in the own rights, but all they share is the medieval times, period).

Entertain - yes, masterpiece - decision pending
3 October 2006
I saw this movie with an open mind, having read parts of the novel when much younger (most of which I didn't remember). My elder sister recommended it, she gave me a heads-up on what it was all about. The visuals are very nicely done, the initial part with the dwarf being obsessed with his "possession" caught my attention. But all in all - I simply felt I was watching one of many tales of my youth (so this movie is on par with : Narnia, Wizard of Oz, and a good many other classics). My only beef is with the utter/total fawning of many viewers (people here at work) and some reviewers (titles like : Best movie _Ever_). I've seen too many excellent movies that spoke to me, moved me, made me feel intense emotions that pertain/relate to my life - so that any movie that deals with fantasy/sci-fiction cannot rate as a 10/10 or best ever. My 0.02$ worth. To prove my point, would I be saying this at a viewing of this movie - I would be quickly stoned to death for having had the gall to criticize it. To each his own. So - it was entertaining, but still something that amuses the child in me - no great revelation.

Cheers,

JM.

Not a diamond in the rough ...

Warning: Spoilers
a simple quartz will do ! The only reason I remember this movie is that I never fail to mention it as my "bottom-10" movies of all time. Lo & behold, I was just mentioning right now - and noticed it got a 6.7 average - blasphemy !

SPOILERS : Let's review some "action" of the movie - to see where it makes sense (not necessarily in chronological order :

1) The couple takes off - go round & round, never find their beach destination, wake-up in the vehicule - it's right there in front of them !? Yeah - sure ! 2) The dude bags some type of walrus, it keeps moving during the entire movie ... OK - so that makes sense {sigh} 3) He tries to chop down a tree, it seems to be made of titanium-alloy, later it almost falls over by itself ... are you still with me ?

It's not a horror movie, just a horrible movie - what's really frightening to me is to think someone out there actually "enjoyed" it ... gasp !

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me - than a frontal lobotomy - but I guess that's what it takes sometimes ...

Cheers mate !

As good as anything made in the USofA or elsewhere

Warning: Spoilers
I couldn't bring myself to write a monolingual review on a very bilingual movie - one that celebrates and chastises us on the childishness of our cultural and linguisitic disputes. Colm Feore is, at 1st, sort of low-key to the loud/foul-mouth Huard, but he quickly gains our respect as a straight-man (with an edge), and some funny sarcastic/tongue-in-cheek humor. I'm quickly turned off by an over-abundance of swearing / violent-action-sequences, but in this movie - it fits the bill. The storyline is solid (not too many obvious gaping-holes) and the packaging is top-rated. Looking forward to a sequel.

***

I was going to a french component of my review but the IMDb engine forbids it ... a shame !

A Leopard cannot change his spots ...
15 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
...no more than many males cannot curb their animal desires. I don't know of anyone that doesn't have them, _the_ difference is acting on it VS exercising self-restraint. Many guys cannot deny the "call of the wild" anymore than they can pass up on a cold beer (on a hot day, or any other day for that matter).

Throw in the mix the reality of a psychological chain parenthood brings, peer pressure from your buddies, your better half denying you the frequency of intimacy you used to enjoy and you have the ingredients for an explosive cocktail of human emotions and their subsequent actions and consequences.

It is a reality of spawning off-springs that the women pick up more than their share, with their mates wanting to hang on to past glories, and adolescent fantasies.

We have a deep chasm there - and no bridge in sight !

The movie doesn't take a preachy, holier-than-thou attitude, but merely observes 3 couples (and a loose group of friends/acquaintances) at different stages of their lives : 1 has a child, the other's wife is pregnant and the 3rd is being "harassed" to get going.

I thought the strong points of the movies was the dialogue and the acting from the entire cast. I doubt anyone can leave the theater and neither quote nor discuss the movie.

Well done ! Bravo ! Encore ! -> Can we get the sequel from the women's point of view and this time show that they also have affairs, frustrations, exhibit underhanded tricks to get their ways ... basically paint as realistic a tapestry as they did for the men ....

Made in Quebec/Canada (and well made too)
28 February 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is tautly written, well acted, and stylishly put together. The sexual tension is at most times present, when the "vamps" are at work. Caroline Néron does an excellent job as the lead actress - with intensity without overplaying it. I was pleased the producers were confident of putting a women in her 30's up there in a beauty/glamorous role - when they tend to go with the younger 18-21 "bunnies". Conrad Pla is on par with her, while having the added problem of having to try to seem like the good, normal cop - when his inner desires are more in the s&m department, not too mention _who_ they are with.

It proved once again you don't need wall-to-wall action or endless decapitation to provide entertainment. It also respects the intelligence of the viewer who could want an erotic-thriller, and gives both from a psychological point of view, although you see little XXX, and frankly, the movie doesn't need it. My only small bone to pick is with the ending, not to say it's bad, it feels a little tacked on - but it didn't tarnish the experience. Hopefully it sets up a sequel.

Well done, people. Too bad it didn't stay in the theaters long enough to be appreciated. For those who prefer the "Brahms Stoker - Dracula" it will do well. For the Blade type - you probably won't enjoy.

More than meets the eye ....
26 January 2005
With all the hype about it being a Cronenberg movie, and the infamous exploding head part - there are so many nice touches to the movie that makes it stick in your mind, a few things come to mind :

1) The mood of the movie - shot in a way that doesn't feel like everything's been "touched-up" afterwards to make it look nice.

2) the score, that adds to the creepy/spooky theme

3) I also thought the level of emoting from Cameron Vale - was on par with what you would expect from a vagrant who is now told that he has exceptional and deadly skills and now toys with it a bit like a kid who has found (god forbid) his daddy's rifle (i.e. the scene with the yogi).

4) It has a constant menacing undertone - without having to do much, and that to me is both compelling (for that type of movie) and points to someone behind the helm that knows what they are doing.

5) The 50's / 60's touch with the Ephemerol publicity, the early 80's with Mainframe Computers ...

6) And the outcome of the duel between Vale & Revok was original (nobody that I saw it with originally figured it out - some even after "it" was done, and nobody when I had it on VHS (I would actually stop it right before and pop-quiz them), for you others out there - you must be psychic ... or scanners ;-)

Enjoy - in this day of non-stop action, don't think, don't feel - just look and suck-up the CGI, it's refreshing to have a movie that tries to scare you because of what you think and feel.

Pop Rock not Heavy Metal Rock ....
23 August 2004
I saw this last Saturday (Aug 21st)....and this is what stayed with me, starting with the negative - so I can end on a positive note :

n1] If one bothers to make a movie, one should endeavour to remove the most obvious plot-holes as to not "alien-ate" (sorry - couldn't help that one) the movie-goer. On that topic : -> Why did the Preds bother doing so much hand-2-hand combat ? When they picked off several lesser human opponents in P1 and P2, with lasers, heat-sensing, ..etc ?? -> Having used them to {I guess prove the worthiness/courage in combat - don't they already know they likely will not survive with odds of X (read more than 20) to 3. While _NOT_ using their cloaking/armour and technology ??? -> Another thing that also annoyed me was the clothing - although it could be debated that below the surface - some insulation is provided by the snow - like an igloo...still on the surface ?! -> Also, a mission that seemed somewhat risky, would have seen the risk factor go waaay up, after noticing a brand new hole - going straight there and some energy activity... send in the marines (maybe the ancestors of Hicks, Vasquez, and all the other really cool crew). -> Time to throw in some techno-stuff, like a woman - deciphering some scripts, and some binary code on the walls - they could have nicknamed "mother"... etc.

p1] For the all the maligned reviews, the action and cgi - were eye-catching and well done. p2] I enjoyed the combat scenes and the way the lead-lady "be-friended" the Pred#3. p3] I liked the dynamic aspect of the movie.

All in all - I enjoyed it ... especially since my expectations were low and the movie delivered the basics (no storyline, minimal character development) but kick-butt mano-a-mano.

Hope AVP-2 is better defined though - so much more can be done....

Many producers spend a lifetime trying to make one of these...
28 October 2003
... and never really come close.

How can one be the witness to this much acting, such a strong storyline about greed (which makes us appreciate human qualities - all the more), and not be touched/moved by this ?

Combined with part II (which really is not optional - considering it's dramatic revelation) - it makes for superbe movie-going experience that is barely 1 notch short of GodFather quality, as far as drama goes. Character development is excellent, pretty much all of it is plausible, nothing really grates, except to see a good man suffer.

Jean is good, an erudite - but he cannot understand nor smell a conspiracy - as this makes no real sense to someone with his principles. And when is all said and done - what matters most once you are heading to the pearly gates (should you be so lucky) the amount of wealth you've amassed or how you lived ? How do you hope to be remembered ?

As cunning and sly as Soubeyrand is - I guess he never figured it out....

A cruel, stunning classic, with impeccable french nuances. A must-see.

Gattaca (1997)
For the human side in all of us...
15 September 2003
Warning: Spoilers
... before technology starts to dehumanize us - hasn't it started already ?

This movie is for those of us that still believe that movies is about story-telling more than anything else. Believable characters (not those that can leap tall buildings) and situations that have/can/could actually occur.

Gattaca is more interested in the latter (thus science-fiction) but for those that follow developments in that field - it sends a chilling/haunting message : if technology far out-paces sociology ... we are all looking at a chaotic future, one where - I for one - would not want to live in.

This movie is thought-provoking, and challenging (for those that aren't too dazed with hollywood's constant barrage of flashing/strobing CGI effects (à la Matrix or Armageddon - where it is easier to train a oil rig operator to be an astronaut than vice-versa ... sure).

The movie craftily blends personalities against desires, the drive to attain perfection vs the pitfalls of actually obtaining it through a genetic shortcut.

There is sooo much in the movie - once has to see it to understand how much it contains.

Having a child with a rated learning disability, I have attempted to memorize one line (*** possible spoiler for some, I doubt it without seeing the movie - but guidelines are guidelines ***). Doctor Lamar : "I never did tell you about my son. You see he is not all they promised, but who knows what he can become".

Enjoy !

Jerome.

Not a rose by any other name
13 February 2003
I did - what many listed here - have done. And rented it against my better judgement : since the previews had done little to entice me.

As objective as an analysis goes : (here's my 0.02$)

Positives : 1) The movie is original 2) the way the multiple stories intersect is probably the high-point 3) It contains seasoned actors that perform the role as well as can be expected. 4) I did smile during the door shooting scene with Travolta & Jackson, and few others humours one-liners/conversations.

Negatives : I) There is *way* too much foul language ... is it possible to let the clock tick with hearing an f-word, I can even commend times it should be used to underline/emphasize ...etc ... but every 45 seconds !!!

II) Individually, some stories might have become interesting - but by just skimming on the better ones (Bruce Willis) - and digging deeper in the blander ones (Travolta's)and the dude "bagged" in the car = you come away with a : Yeah - so what ? lingering in your mind.

III) A few original lines and skewed timeline doesn't a movie make. One has the sense of a hyped up boxing match where the Champ get cut in the 1st minute of the 1st round, thus ruled a "no-contest" ...

I can see it appealing to some MTV-type crowd or some that desperately cr ave something original (which it is) , but gives me nothing to "digest" once over, VS something one can really connect (and sink his teeth into like : The Shawshank Redemption, Gattaca, American Beauty - that one is a rose, by any other name ...

And it **Certainly** doesn't deserve to be in the Top100 of all times !

Enjoy the show, Folks !

A french diamond in the rough
20 November 2002
I saw this movie many years ago, cannot recall all the details, but it was one of those french movies one gets to see on a rainy saturday afternoon. At first you watch it without paying any real attention, then it starts :

get funny, funnier, the plot is well thought out, and finally it becomes memorable. ### A lady (Albine) works in a jewelry store, one day 2 robbers break in. In the confusion of the ill-planned heist - one of them is killed. The other leaves, but plans to exact revenge. Enters the Inspector Tarnopol, who must not only figure out the deed, but also how to win pretty Albine's heart (he is also married). At the same time Tarnopol is also being hunted by an ex-con... and so the plot thickens. ### Well acted, great pace, delectable dialogue (rambo movie-goers will want to pass on this one, 3 aisles down, go to T2 - Judgement day).

  • The kind of movie (like "The Majestic") that I believe the movie industry should produce more of.

JM.

PS: I did see T2, and liked it also.
