Black Widow (2021)
A decent tribute for a left-out marvel character...
Finally a standalone movie for a nice character of MCU who kinda got a cold treatment from the MCU in Avenger movies...
Great action sequences with some badass martial art stunts from the ladies...good chemistry among the family, with some wry humour and dialogues that entertain well.
The story could have been more heartfelt and truer if they could have shown the trauma and real hardships the girls went through - psychological and physical upheaval that turned them into the hardcore assassins... that way audience could have connected with this character more.
In the end, MCU and bigwigs acknowledging a female superhero standalone movie story is a great move...
Bahut Hua Sammaan (2020)
Creative and INteresting Sarcasm!
This is a really good movie with some true creative presentation with great comic effects blended into the sarcasm on the current plight/state of our country...
Cast has done a really nice job of going with the flow here especially Nidhi Singh as a policewomen. Rest actors are in there best form, as always Ram Kapoor and our beloved Sanjay Mishra...
The true Hinduism - with Vedantic philosophy has been buried down somewhere in our current society and a corrupted and half-baked Hindutva philosophy has taken it's place...Religion is always a contentious issue to portray or talk about on-screen but this is required watch for today's time. It's a truly creative way of putting across a viewpoint.
The Meddler (2015)
It's a charming lil gem of a movie!
It is a sweet and charming movie with a BIG heart and makes you believe in this world! Sarandon gave a great performance and her character goes way beyond a cliched portrayal of an obsessive or doting mom.
This seems such a well observed character with all the nuances and simple details of lives that the whole became more than the parts in this story. Seems so real to life and well hashed out...gives you the reason to relate and feel for the characters...
Give it a try.
A decent movie...
This movie has good characterizations and some nice acting. At the same time it seems to be historically accurate mostly (per my reading from other sources). Some poignant and thoughtful scenes of the revolutionary or resistance group contribution...I am always inspired by such stories. This is one of them.
As an INdian, we also have come across several such stories about freedom fighters or revolutionaries from the Indian Independence struggle from the British (Yes we have more than Gandhi to pay homage to for our Independence :))...Some of the great ones are Bhagat Singh, Chandrasekhar Azad Sukhdev [2 of the most courageous and fearless warriors), Rajguru, Sukhdev, S. N. Bose, etc...Bhagat SIngh and his comrades went on hunger strike for 55/56 days at a stretch against the Bristish atrocities while in Jail (not treating them as POWs et al)...
All these brave people RIP. God movie. Try watching.
Friends: The Reunion (2021)
It was like walking down the memory lane of some amazing and heartfelt moments...moments i have cherished personally...
The fans short interviews summed it up - these actors should sleep well and always live a courageous life - they have given strength, hope and BIG laughs to many of us during our trials and tribulations. They are OUR friends.
It was awesome to see them together once again. We have laughed and cried with them. Though my only issue was so many other characters not required here. We would have loved to see the friends cast do something impromptu and fun with more discussions...
Friends' directors, writers, Cast and all the Crew - Thanks for this creation.
I watched it because of Sridevi and she doesn't disappoint. Another great acting and she did justice to her role.
But what as a 21st century man I would like to see (and it is sincerely HIGH time) that the girl should FIGHT back herself. SHe is NOT a Victim, stop treating her like one...She can surely cry, feel sad and can ask the question WHY her?, but soon should stand up and be bold like new world women and respond accordingly. If they could have shown that the mother-daughter duo bring the culprits to justice, even with some vigilantism that would have been a much better storyline and movie
Lets move on with age old nonsense of Abla Naari !
Super Deluxe (2019)
This is an Intelligent movie with a heart!
Movie has a universal message relating to relationships, sex, needs Vs wants, identity, faith Vs rational Vs belief...
The characterization, storylines & arcs, are quite lively and allow depth in portraying the acts giving meaning to why some action has been taken...Overall a bold and interesting movie for Indian cinema.
Gove it a try and you will not be disappointed.
I Care a Lot (2020)
You just Couldn't care less!
The world can be a s***** place, and now we have outright devious, despicable, and nasty women as protagonist, villain and what have you!
Other than the acting skills of Pike, Dinklage, and Wiest (and thats why an extra star)- there is nothing much to write about here. Writer and Director needed a much stronger and sharp script to hold things together but they failed mostly. probably they wanted to show a monster of a woman villain, but didn't put much thought in the script - The idea seemed interesting with a potential and beginning was decent, but Pike's character and storyline was mostly bland after a while and you can in no way like anything about the movie as things progressed and by the 2nd half the story become too full of itself!
The only tidbit we learn - how to increase the shelf-life of a broken tooth by immersing in milk!
Honestly, it's a waste of time, with plotholes, unbelievable storyline especially the 2nd half, I couldn't care less!
Promising Young Woman (2020)
I really hoped it had more to say................
As a man and (for a lack of better word) - feminist, I sincerely kept hoping that I will see the Whole more than the some of parts here...something more than an average joe revenge thriller, but nopes pretty mundane stuff. Not sure why the gung-ho and award nominations - except that Carry did a good job of portraying a women hurt, obsessed with revenge and unnecessarily stuck in the past (a great line from another concerned woman in the movie - pls move on, for all of us, only if she did!)
I want to admit, that we men can never fully understand what a woman goes through when she is molested, but then a fake product packaged as a feminist struggle can't help this age old nuisance prevalent in the humanity,,, more manipulative and nihilistic than it should be and after a while I just lost the interest. It has nothing new to say, nor it is perceptive or considerate much...It has some gotcha moments though, but that's about it. Even those seem shallow and inconsequential...
We all have gone through our pains, but suffering is a choice...Spiritual teachings, especially eastern philosophy advocates compassion and forgiveness. We can't have eye for an eye, and this world need more Warriors - with Courage and compassion. And if you say I am preaching, then look at this movie, what is it showcasing? - some very specific set of situation and childish behaviors for the sake of proving its point on an important topic...Women deserves a better dialogue and movies on this topic.
Wonderful!...The White Way of Delight!
The heart and soul that has been poured into the show (especially Season 1) by the creator is clearly evident. The cinematography is gorgeous...The heartfelt storylines are amplified by the soothing soundtrack and brilliant performances - oh Wow! - the protagonist did an awesome job - the passion, intensity and liveliness she brings to a complex character with not an easy life is just marvelous.
The show also depicts realistic portrayal on identity, bullying, prejudice, racism, sexism, and some of the dialogues resonate deeply...
Above all, in these times, when mostly TV shows and movies are all about dark, complex, and confounding themes with several twists and turns, this show is a ray of light with lot of hope, positivity and charm. That's what this world needs more!
My only concern - some stumbling in season 2&3 in few episodes and storylines - especially I would have wanted better story arcs and plot lines for the new lady teacher (and surely the previous male teacher acting was just NOT up too par with the rest of cast), and other kids...Anyways we can't ask for everything in life! ...But I hope I have become a Kindred Spirit!
Durante la tormenta (2018)
Could have been Great!
We all know that this is art and not reality, but story telling, characterization, and acting makes you watch a movie. It is difficult to explain why I disliked the Ending of movie so much without divulging the story...So let me just say that, while director Oriol Paulo did a great job in building a great fantasy and mystery in the movie, he chickened out in the end and chose a weaker ending, showcasing that either humans (and I am pressed to say here a woman) just can't live with what is more stronger version of themselves...that we can't let go of the past even when we realize that it doesn't have that much value and that we are mere puppets in the hands of fate like some sentimental fools!
No we are NOT, many of us have made tougher choices in life and come out stronger on the other side. That's all i have to say...
Could have been a great movie, but ended up being a compromising dull version of itself mostly bcz of the mediocre ending.
Average Political Satire....
Mostly average story-telling...not sure why these days to bring out a humour director and cast want to be loud and condescending! Several times over-acting during a scene and then nothing really engaging...
La casa de papel (2017)
Didn't ring a bell with me...more manipulative and confusing and nothing really engaging or substantive...overrated it seems with unnecessary romantic-subplots randomly thrown in... not for me. Others can try for themselves...
Nolan is surely a brilliant director, but he misfired this bullet...probably the inverted entropy concept, heightened/increased the overall Entropy of the movie ;) , thereby creating more disorder!
In Asian spiritual culture, we say that in this world every good thing taken to extreme can also become more a burden, a deficit, a liability! Nolan is now maybe taking it too seriously (not sincerely!) and this has backfire here. The story is unnecessarily confusing, abrupt and uninteresting...on the acting front also we don't see any better outcomes. It felt actors were just blurting out the lines and seemed more disoriented, probably they themselves cdn't digest the concept...
I will look out for the next one from Nolan. Humble suggestion - try a different genre this time - away from sci-fi, mind-bending stuff... :). Sorry Nolan, wanted to like it, but I want to be a unbiased and true admirer.
Hubie Halloween (2020)
Hope all the people who disliked reThink!
This is a really nice movie - funny, some scares, but more importantly a movie with a BIG heart like our Hubie!
Lets for once, move away from crime filled, negative energy, and complex movies full of twists and turns. This is a movie to bring us back to the reality, that we are HUmans first and need more Courage, Compassion, and Clarity to live in this world!
As the mommy said - "You see Hubie, True Bravery is being Kind". So throw away your critical and too logical hat and just enjoy the ride! Happy Halloween!
A refreshing and timely story!
This is an interesting story of 3 college friends who happen to be free-spirited women (a refreshing change) with a background satire on the life in a low quality engg colleges and institutes in India that have mushroomed in the last couple of decades...
The opening monologue from the dean is truly original, hilarious and well acted & performed. The acting, dialogue delivery and timing for all the characters in the series are quite up to the mark! (even though it may be a low budget series). Moreso, the sexual innuendoes (and jokes) coming from the girls do NOT feel forced or vulgar, rather they seem to truly portray the independence of new age Indian women - those who can own their s***!
Overall a great watch. Thumbs up to the team! India is changing (somewhat)!
P.S. - for Director - pls make sure for series 2 the team beef up the script and screenplay on the lines of also providing a though-provoking depiction of the issues, and shortcomings of such institutions...And don't just leave this story as another teen drama with sex or romance...
It is just an Okay film...propagating the stereotypes!
It is so ironic that even in 21st century in our country class and caste divide prevails in a rampant manner and rather than making ourselves stronger and truly self-sufficient, our societal pressures push the parents to such an extent that some of them forget the thin line between aspiration (or inspiration) Vs obsession, qualification Vs education! And mind it what is shown here through the lens of a poor family mindset is just mildly different than so many other stories from middle or upper middle class families in India. The difference here is just that the so called mistake committed by a father is easily perceived as a 'black & white' Crime compared to the mistakes of so many other parents who indirectly take bribes, believe in superstitious religionism, work like slaves in corporate world, and in many other ways perpetuate the corruption that is so unchecked and deeply rooted in the society.
The story has its moments, and the director has tried to showcase the true desperation of a poor family parents restricted by their condition to create some opportunity for their son for a better life...though I would have loved to see some scenes of a mature dialogue between father, and mother & son regarding the possibility of creating such an opportunity given their situation...
Their were some nice additions of characters and story arcs, but none could blossom into anything much, and then Prakash Jha went into a similar sentimental and melodramatic mode in the direction that he has been portraying in some of his NOT so good movies recently. This is 21st century and we can be bold and irreverent in storytelling and properly depicting the shortcomings of a system. Especially the Indian education system which is rotten, archaic, and so lop-sided that it has majorly created robots and artificially intelligent people , much before the current threat from the western world of AI and Robotics taking over the corporate jobs!!
Unnatural Selection (2019)
I had more expectations around this documentary - that it will take a more informed and holistic approach to the whole genetic engineering (editing) debate...Some decent stories in the 2nd episode where changes in human lives suffering from some genetic illnesses are portrayed and those lives an see some improvements...(though as per my understanding we can Only help people with mutation in single gene; multiple gene mutations like cancer are way out of our reach)...And some stories which try to portray these immature biohackers who neither have the discipline to understand the nuances of gene-editing nor have the integrity and ethics to fathom the ramifications of their stunts, are pathetic....
Decent depiction of the story of our Unsung heroes.
Much better depiction of the true story of unsung war heroes...Great ensemble cast with quality dialogues and performances. Though a few actors were not up to the par...A lil more depth to the characters and story-telling would have done more justice to the 54 POWs we didn't know much about. I have seen more hard-hitting WW2 movies coming out of hollywood...still from the standards of bollywood where we go in extremes in such scenarios of either melodrama or unabashed jingoism, 1971 portrays a much controlled and poignant effort.
May these soldiers find their peace.
The Old Guard (2020)
Average movie...could have been much better!
Some nice stunts, but ultimately age-old story...and it's not just that, the presentation and execution matters, where things become average...the antagonist is just portrayed as all evil and over-the-top...too cliched.
This story had so much potential...they could have depicted scenes through the history of these Warriors more effectively.
And pls for such a portrayal of warriors - u shd have gone all global - representation from Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Roman, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, true African civilizations would have made a more interesting milieu.
Average movie for me.
Good, but it is NO Stranger Things!
I do not want to take away from the hard work of the writers, directors, and cast, but it just didn't click with me or more like couldn't hold my attention!....
After several episodes it starts to become boring and repetitive. Moreover, it doesn't seem to have the same level of excitement, suspense, nostalgia as compared to stranger things...
Maybe it's just me, but after a while that gloomy atmosphere, and everyone's seriousness, fakeness and cheating, and collation of characters (and their stories) involved didn't interest me. At times thrill, twists & turns surely works to keep the attention in any series or movie, but these days cinema has become too dark, gloomy, and situations are made unnecessarily complex, with additional aspects of time-travel and what not...This is not entertainment or wow experience but rather a tussle with yourself to keep track of things, as if I trying to write a diary noting every bit of whats happening around me!
Whatever the great critics say about this...Not clicked with me!
Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior (2020)
Another bogus and cartoonish depiction of history!!
I am not sure when can we come out of this jingoism and mad nationalistic attitude! This is 21st century, and we know about the complex nature of our history - we had issues with our own people - marathas, rajputs, jats, or even mughals...or whoever had reigns during those times. But the celebrity actors and directors keep coming up with these historically inaccurate movies steeped in racial stereotyping and fanaticism!
Everything is portrayed with broad strokes...Moreover, this shallow portrayal of characters mars the whole experience of current audience, as they are deprived of getting to know and appreciate the TRUE warriors/people who may have contributed an important legacy and aspect of history.
I just hope we grow and start depicting warriors or history characters as people with strengths as well as weaknesses...but till then enjoy these cartoonish movies as we enjoy some animated movies for kids!
Mardaani 2 (2019)
Not Mardaani anymore...but one (Wo)man army jingoism!
Rape statistics and current pathetic state of women in the country notwithstanding, this is a hopeless, listless, and male bashing way of portraying the real and core issue of male exploitation of the women.
The story is outright bogus, incredulous and reeks of 70s mind-numbing and mediocre portrayal in B movies - one man army and black and white portrayal of good vs evil....no one wants to treat the disease but keep harping on the symptoms...And these female stars are just cashing on the hysteria and bashing that is all over the social media - Indian women rape. Nothing will solve it completely, though we can make our women mentally and physically strong. At the same time we can bring up stories where we can have a mature dialogue between the two sides and especially making the male side realize their mistake, rather than treating them as animals.
There are many concerns with the movie, but I have no time to rant out endlessly. Don't waste ur time.
Made in China (2019)
Bulb did lit, But...still we couldn't catch fire!!!
My headline is taken from the movie where a married lady describes the issue in her sex life to the doctor protagonist in search of finding the solution...
What I like - As indians, we have started to TALK about sex. Much needed. We educated upper middle class people who treat sex in a hypocrite 'hush-hush' manner...MUST see the movie. NOT talking about it is one of the biggest concerns for our country. Though mostly this has remain restricted to the lower class and rustic India, still the so called Urban people mostly want to keep the discussion about it under the balnket - much like the sex! Actings are mostly up-to-mark, but again the heroine is completely sidelined and yes - she can smoke cigarette which is much more dangerous and unhealthy compared to sex, but she can't support her husband in provding solution to the masses!
Though the script could have more depth, and probably several aspects of it better handled, but I gave 1 extra star, just bcz this topic must be raised in our country which has become a sex-starved, hypocrite, and bogus society.
Another half-baked attempt........
Nothing much to write about...people with big egos, fake life, and self-obsessive world view and wrongly ambitious - including the women protagonists, hitting each other with platitudes, and boring arguments!!!
Rather than getting deeper into this universal and quite relevant issue whereby the movie could have showcased the psychological aspects driving such behavior, it rather took a mediocre and sensationalistic approach to the story.
And NO, all women are not bright and in one of the scene, though what the perpetrator did was appalling, but then so-called victim was NOT a hero either!
Humanity needs a much more mature and holistic approach for such an age-old issue to be portrayed on the celluloid.
