Cinematic extortion comes with lack of originality
9 December 2009
This years 2012 was supposed to be thé highlight of the year. Unfortunately for the audience the only thing epic about it was the grandeur of destruction. The movie starts normal, with lots of potential. Then, as it moves on to John Cusack's role Jackson, it becomes some mixture of War of the Worlds and Day after Tomorrow, and Armageddon. Somehow it has become basic principle that the main character in a disaster movie is either divorced, or split up from his girlfriend, and is necessary to find and win this 'true love' blabla back. Furthermore it's the government trying to cover the disaster up, because yeah, that's what governments do: cover things up. It's really a shame that this has to be another one of that kind of movies, because all potential it has flushes down the landfill together with whole continents.

What a shame.

Martyrs (2008)

Dark, very dark
18 August 2009
The movie starts out like a good horror should: a desperate girl in a creepy environment. Immediately I was hypnotized to the screen, wanting to know what happened to her. The horrors that occurred these 15 years before the rest of the story were something I didn't expect. The cold, cruel setting of the movie drifts on desperation and does a very good job, while continuously uttering the question 'is this real or not?' The blood and gore are not flying around in a brutal yet funny way, but more realistic in a way that creeps most people out to the point of looking away. The cold setting of the kills and the psychotic acting really are the highlights here. The acting is really incredible, I felt the shivers on my back more than a couple of times during the play. As the plot thickens more becomes clear, only to be twisted again and again to make you really wanting to know what is or isn't real. So I'm really sorry to say that the ending didn't really live up to the story we had seen earlier. It ends in a rather quick, almost parody-like way to leave me asking 'why like this?'

A good pastime miniseries
9 March 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I thought this miniseries was OK. Not outstanding, not too overdone. I recognized a lot of stuff from the game XIII, though I enjoyed the things they changed in the story.

The comparison to Bourne only goes for 'the agent with memory-loss'. The story is completely different, and in my opinion the plot is way better. It's only a shame that this plot gets degraded by the open ending, which I also hated in the game.

Possibly the best thing about this miniseries is that it's two movies, instead of one. They never would've fit the entire story in one movie and still make sense. Plus it's double the pleasure for the viewer.

The acting was fine in general. Also Sam, played by Caterina Murino who featured in Casino Royale, was a good twist in the original story. As far as conspiracies go, this is a good one to enjoy watching.

Religulous (2008)
1/10
Lame.
8 March 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Though I agree on the points he wants to make in the film, the only point he makes is that he is a very bad filmmaker. Editing is bad, discussion sucks, and the humor is worthless. In comparison to a much better (part of a) documentary about religion, Zeitgeist, Religulous doesn't spend a single second on the origins of religion. It just rants on and on about religious people being stupid and contradicting. Even when Maher 'gives them a chance' to tell their view, he cuts them off and declares the discussion closed.

If you really want to know where religions came from, and in such why they are so deliriously ridiculous, go watch Zeitgeist. If you want a funny view on religion: go watch George Carlin. Just make sure not to waste your time on this film.
