Match Game (1973–1990)
Charles said to me when I was a celebrity helping him with run throughs of "Sweethearts"...
1 November 2014
"Ron, you are the only one on this planet who could host the remake of "Match Game" and actually make it work. You are SO funny. Are you sure you're not really Gene Rayburn? Am I on Candid Camera?"

I don't think he was too far off. When I heard Gene once say he had built a roller skating rink in his house, I just laughed. I had a 12' round x 3' deep swimming pool in my 4th floor artists' loft in downtown Los Angeles. The trampoline was too expensive.

I knew Ira Skutch. My best friend at the time, Leslie Price, now Leslie DeMoraes was an assistant contestant coordinator for Goodson-Todman, insisting I meet Ira Skutch, who I interviewed with personally.

That, and I watched every episode of "Match Game '73 forward, and can recall any of it. "Cuckoo blank"

"Fran and Ollie"

Hysterical.

Gene's reaction would have been mine. It's uncanny. Then years later I met Charles when I helped Richard Reid develop "Sweethearts". Charles' response to me while we were taking a break shocked the living daylights out of me, but surprised me none. You see, I put on game shows in my bedroom for all the neighborhood kids and "Match Game" was our resounding favorite. I was all of 13 when the show debuted. I even wrote Goodson-Todman with the idea for "Children's Match Game". It was only when I met Ira Skutch that he confided in me they loved the idea, but didn't want to dilute "Match Game" It did however spark them to do "Child's Play" starring Bill Cullen some time later. Maybe those royalty checks I should've received will pay off someday when I can host the remake of "Match Game". All I ask is for the audition and let the powers that be decide, and no, I don't do impersonations. I'm always just me.

Terrible Show
18 August 2013
This is a technically bad show whose hosts are never prepared with banter except about themselves. Steines loves bragging about himself and she goes along with it painfully. Without seeing the ratings, I'd guess nothing but hash marks or barely a 1, which, as national advertisers like to put it, "a 1 is a 1 is a 1".

I'd rather watch "The 700 Club" at the same time on another network, and I'm not religious at all.

Hosts who care, spend time beforehand to actually read newspapers and care about current events, not whether or not it was written for them on cue cards so far away from the lens of the camera, we can always tell they're reading. My guess is they both arrive 30 minutes before air. It shows.

My advice: replace him with a real host. She can be salvaged and not look so intimidated (he relayed a story about both being in his trailer and her fetching coffee for him) by an ego maniac.
