On the Beach (1959)
A lot of the movie didn't make any sense!
Spoiler On the Beach
so much about this movie is bad. First, I'll touch on the positives about this movie: Ava Gardener is 37 years old and is smoking hot; thanks to a white one-piece bathing suit you can see Dona Anderson's nipples; you also get to see Gregory Peck grab Gardener's ass a couple of times; Gregory Peck's acting is phenomenal; still can't get over how hot Gardener and Anderson were; Australia is beautiful (even in black & white); and the submarine shots are awesome.
Now I'll get to why I rated this film so low. The movie takes place in Australia, but no-one has an Australian accent. Anthony Perkins's character is supposed to have been a born and bred Aussie, but doesn't even pretend to have a hint of an accent.
Anthony Perkins and his wife have a child that they always hover over, yet we never see the child and it never makes a sound.
Fred Astaire commits suicide by inhaling carbon monoxide fumes, while in a garage that is not sealed. That's right, the wooden garage door has an inch gap between every wooden board and there is a shot of an open window.
There is a scene where the sub, which is supposed to be nuclear, but is clearly diesel, explores a bombed out San Francisco bay. When we see the bombed out city, there is no damage
seriously everything is intact.
Now I understand this was made in 1959, but come on have some common sense. Not everyone is going to die from radiation poisoning. Look at Japan and how many people survived the bombings in WW2. Wouldn't there be other submarines underwater? Wouldn't the US president been in his secure facility?
I could go on for hours, but I don't want to spoil the movie. The chemistry between Gardener and Peck is very believable, but there is zero chemistry between Perkins and Anderson. Also, watchers beware this movie has a lot of homosexual overtures, but they may have just been the type of humor they had in the late '50's.
Caprica (2009)
Canceled
Thank god they canceled this! I tried to watch it, I have so much respect for Moore, but this show just sucked! Too many homosexual relationships, too many plural marriages, too many pagan gods, too many strange customs, too many weird tattoos, too many underage girls, and absolutely no action. No-one wants to watch a show you can't jerk off too! I felt very uncomfortable watching this show. Ronald Moore tried to force way too much down our throats of what the perfect utopia would be like. After BSG, I expected something almost poetic. It reminded me of listening to the incredible Break on Through by the Doors, and then listening to very odd Soft Parade by the Doors. R.Moore goes from ground breaking with BSG to "hmmmm...weird" with Caprica. I mean Moore did screw up Star Trek pretty badly, but I thought he redeemed himself with BSG. Now I think he's doing another spin off called Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome. I give him one more chance!
Spartacus: Blood and Sand: The Red Serpent (2010)
WoW!
If you like action, hot-naked women, and are obsessed with Roman History this is the show for you. The CGI is absolutely insane; it intensifies the action ten fold. This show is the Gladiator meets 300, mixed with HBO's Rome. The show is so good it was renewed for a second season, before it even aired. Now if your looking for a classic reenactment of Roman behavior, this probably isn't the show for you. But once again this show is filled with blood, boobs, and CGI. Sometimes you need a break from thought provoking shows like Dexter, Criminal Minds, and Fringe. This show is a great release from reality; it will make want to hurt and fornicate. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
