The Gilded Age: Never the New (2022)
Season 1, Episode 1
5/10
Terrible acting makes it unwatchable
11 December 2023
Would be a great series if the acting weren't so awful. The actors playing the main characters deliver their lines like robots. Christine Baranski is the only good actor. The rest of the cast deliver lines so stilted it's *cringe* I could barely get through the first handful of episodes. It's like watching a really bad soap opera.

Decided my time was better spent watching something else.

The set is gorgeous though. Character development is interesting, just wish the acting were better.

If you need some ambient TV (aka something on in the background while you're doing something else) then it's not a bad choice. If you actually want to pay attention then watch something else.

Season 1 is great albeit predictable, goes downhill from there
1 February 2021
1st season is enchanting. 2nd is also pretty good, but seasons 4 and 5 are tedious, camera work is awful, and the set/costume designer should've been fired for seasons 4 & 5. It's steamy the first few seasons and engaging. But the writing got pretty bad in seasons 4 & 5. Not sure if the writers got lazy or weren't inspired. It was too predictable and I had to fast forward a lot bc it just wasn't interesting anymore. Shame, since it was such a great story. The accents are pretty bad though and some actors have bad delivery. Hopefully, they'll hire some better writers and set/costume directors going forward. It stopped looking like the 18th century and looked too modern. Overall, not a bad binge watch during coronavirus, but the 1st season was the best

Watch with subtitles if you haven't read the books
29 January 2021
I couldn't understand why ppl raved about this so much. If you haven't read the books, it will be confusing (never heard of these places or things before). Had to watch it 3x to understand the plot. Luckily, the 3rd time I turned on English captions and finally understood the appeal. Good CGI and interesting character development. Around episode 4/5, you realize half of it is in another time (ie flashback). Without subtitles, it's a 4/10. With the subtitles on, it's an 8 or 9. Can't wait to see season 2!

1st season is great. 2nd was worst. 3rd gets slightly better
21 January 2021
I watched this yrs ago (1st season) and rewatched it (binged) during the pandemic. The 1st season is amazing! Very relevant to our times. Yet the 2nd season was boring, predictable. 3rd season it gets a little better, but doesn't match the greatness of the 1st season. It's a good series to watch with some parallels to our current times. I'm just not a huge fan of Sutherland- he always plays the same character. He can do better

LOVED this show. Why did it get cancelled?
8 January 2021
Absolutely brilliant. Makes you wonder if every religion's god could be the same person. Just found out Netflix cancelled this last March. Shame. I was waiting for Season 2 :( Please reconsider! Def worth bingeing

Great idea, poor execution. Terrible acting
3 January 2021
Interesting premise, but executed poorly. Terrible acting (yes, even Wahlberg), it's too melodramatic, sloppy writing, and too many of the shots are zoomed in face shots. Many inconsistencies/lazy writing. Actors make stupid mistakes, which can make you mad. During COVID, when you can't be too choosy, it's not the worst film but it's also not great. Watch it if you need something to fill your time or something to have in the background

Brilliant! Addictive. You'll binge watch this in one day
27 December 2020
Great casting. It's P&P meets Gossip Girl if the Bennett's were rich and had a baseball team of kids.

I loved watching every minute of this and watched it in one sitting. The plot intrigues you immediately; episodes packed a lot of story in 1hr. It's another Shonda hit! Hope there's a season 2!!!

Terrible actors, good storyline
24 December 2020
Why are the twins the worst actors yet the protagonists? I enjoyed the storyline but it's agonizing to watch the twins. Not sure if they're the same person or actually 2 brothers. Everyone else acted well, just these 2 make the series unbearable to watch

Terrible acting, good plot
5 December 2020
During the pandemic, this hits the spot when you've nothing to watch. I've only watched Season 1. 80% of the actors are terrible- either the writing or their delivery. It's staid and seems odd/out of place. But the plot is interesting, albeit predictable. I'd rate it 6-7 stars out of 10

Boring, confusing, bad acting
9 October 2020
Boring and confusing. Not scary at all. Main actor (Pedretti) is awful. Hard to understand character development and plot. Not sure how there are such high ratings. Haunting of Hill House is MUCH better. Not really worth watching

Season 3 sucks
10 July 2020
Seasons 1 and 2 are good 9-10, but Season 3 is confusing and boring. Odd, since there were great actors. Just watch the first two seasons

Good 1st season. 2nd season too predictable
6 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Good 1st season. However, 2nd season is too predictable and a little boring.

SPOILER: I like Sandy's character; she's a true believer. Clara becomes unlikable and stupid IMHO. Hope season 3 is better

Boring, predictable, and campy
29 June 2020
Great premise, but too campy for me. The husband's character gets on my nerves. OK to have on in the background while doing something else, although the wife's voice gets on my nerves. If you're looking to waste time, then watch this film

The Room (2019)

Original premise, slow start, bad lead actors, but ending makes you think! SPOILER: don't watch if you have issues with rape
29 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
First half of the movie is super slow, but picks up at the end - with some twists! Some minor plot holes, but just enjoy the film. The montage of the couple enjoying their wishes coming true is long and drawn out. It could've been shortened and more time spent tightening up the film, eliminating some plot holes or developing the storyline a little more. The lead actors aren't great, their delivery seems stilted, so they probably extended their wishing spree and shortened time actors spent speaking.

While "Kate" is a good actress, her thick accent makes this difficult to watch/believe. The teen Shane is also not a great actor; not as creepy as the younger version. The younger Shane is creepy/innocent as hell.

I think most of the bad reviews are due to the (implied) rape scene at the end. However, I enjoyed the multiple twists towards the end. As another reviewer said, the baby is likely Shane's: the lights flickering, Kate follows Shane and Matt outside before Shane dies so she's probably already be pregnant. John Doe says that the creator has to die for the creation to live in the outside world. Shane (creator) dies; ergo, the baby (creation) can live.

Fun, campy movie
27 June 2020
An enjoyable, fun movie with stereotypical "mafia" characters. Don't go in thinking it's some deep, dark action thriller or an intellectual film and you'll enjoy it. It's not The Godfather, but gives a good laugh

Great premise but boring, predictable, bad acting
27 June 2020
Good actors, good storyline, but boring and terrible scripts. Actors are good, but they deliver their overdramatic and stereotypical lines in an unbelievable manner. And the melodramatic music overshadows every scene with doom and gloom. Big plot holes. I really wanted to like this show, but it's boring and predictable. Can't believe it was approved for a third season

Shoddy camera work (shaky) and abrupt transitions
