Casablanca (1942)
I can't believe a I love a black and white movie!
"I'm shocked, shocked to my foundation that" I love a black and white movie. I NEVER watch black and white movies and my dad finally weared me down and got me to agree to watch it. I was totally expecting to hate it (I wasn't even a big fan of Schindler's List which I thought would be WAY better in color.). Everything about Casablanca was perfect. The characters were all colorful and interesting. The story was powerful. I even got emotional when they start singing the "free France" song to drown out the Nazi song. Great ending, too, if a tiny bit melodramatic (is that the right word?). I loved the police chief as well. All movie makers should use this is a guide on how to make every character different and interesting. Even if you're skeptical, check it out! Now, they just need to remake it...in COLOR!
Twilight (2008)
I wish I hadn't cancelled the dentist appointment to watch this.
Ah, where do you begin with something this awful? I have not read the book, so this review is based solely on the merits of the movie itself...and it sucks. I've no doubt if I had read and liked the book, the movie would almost certainly be better even if it didn't live up the expectation of the novel. That said, I never read Harry Potter, either, but enjoy all those films, so the filmmakers of Twilight must have dropped the ball somewhere. I understand the girls think the guy is cute, but the rest of the story is beyond shallow. One of the other comments summed it up perfectly when they asked how a 100+ year old man (in the body of a hot teen boy) finds his intellectual and emotional equal in a 17 year old girl. And she doesn't have anything going for her. She's displaced trailer trash without much of a personality and only modestly attractive. At least make her wicked smart, or have a glowing personality. Yawn. Not enough action, not enough cool vampire stuff, not enough of anything remotely interesting. All I can say is read the book, because the movie is beyond weak.
The Casino Job (2009)
Loved it!
It's hard for me to explain why I had such a good time with this movie, but I loved it. Right out of the gate, I could tell it was very low budget which normally turns me off, but the film grew on me pretty quick. From the opening scene in the strip club I was like "Okay, grauitous nudity right out of the gate" and it is, but I gave it some time and the flick really pulled me in. The main chick (the one who gets raped) is smokin' hot and you feel for her after she gets raped (although my friend made the comment "Raping a stripper isn't the same as raping a real woman" ???? Don't ask, I already smacked him for that.) So, I liked the main girl and the casino owner did a great job - very sleezy. True, there were a couple of weak performances, but the movie isn't meant to win awards, just be a lot of fun and it is. The robbery of the casino was very cool and believable and the end reminded me of Wild Things with a bunch of surprises. I wish the studios would make big movies like this as the story was every bit as good as Oceans 11. Problem is, if a studio made it, they'd take out all the nudity and give us a PG version of Las Vegas. Who wants that?
Grandma's Boy (2006)
Big Time Sleeper
I had never heard of this movie until a friend told me about it, so I looked it up on IMDb. I'd never heard of anyone IN it, but it had a good rating, so I checked it out. Turns out, I did recognize a lot of the actors, especially the lead guy who was hysterical in Wedding Singer. I'm tough on comedies as I don't find most very funny, but a I did get a lot of laughs out of this one. The Dance Dance Revolution scene is a CLASSIC! I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. Of course, I'm a bit of a video game/comic book geek, so I fit right in and liked the characters. I actually found this better than any other Adam Sandler movie (no offense, Adam). A very fun movie overall.
