Surprisingly good...

Surprisingly funny, Body image message gets a little muddied at times, but was nothing like what I expected when I sat down to watch it with my college age daughter.

Definitely worth a watch...

Deja vu...
30 May 2018
Someone clearly watched the fantastic BBC mini series In the Flesh and then saw The Returned and decided for some reason to make damn near the same movie. If I had not seen In the Flesh and The Returned I would have found this to be a fresh take on an overworked genre, instead it's a retread that is not as good as the ones that came before.

It isn't a bad movie, it's just there are better treatments of the same material, so watch In The Flesh and The Returned, then give this a go.

It's well acted and directed, but just doesn't handle the material or approach as well.

Moments spoiled by the rest of the film...
13 September 2017
This movie was trying very hard to be a David Zucker film, in the vein of Airplane or Top Secret and it has it's moments, but overall fell short and couldn't really seem to settle on whether it was slapstick or subtle satire and as a result really failed at both.

Also this is an odd thing to get hung up on, but it bothered me that they had US Marines in Navy dress whites, rather than the proper Marine dress blues.

Rick and Morty: The Ricklantis Mixup (2017)
Season 3, Episode 7

Best thing on TV...
11 September 2017
So R&M has transcended being a silly little cartoon with many episodes, this season promised darker and has delivered with every episode. I think this is possibly the strongest episode to date and really addresses some very deep societal issues, which might be jarring for some, but they do so in such an accessible way that I found it brilliant.

The homage to Training Day and Stand by Me were so well done, touches of Snape Rick were also very nice. I cannot wait to see where they go next, this show, though grotesque and vulgar at times, it just fantastic.

Just terrible...
10 September 2017
I've given this way more chances than I should, if it were a longer format I would have bailed by episode 3, but at 30 minutes I gave it a few more chances.

Contrived and obvious plots, old trite ideas, just terrible, I don't mind episodic TV, Twilight Zone was brilliant and I adore Black Mirror, but this just fails on every level and as mentioned by another review, it really does, at times, feel like you are watching the submissions for a film class at a local community college.

Makes me really look forward to the new season of Black Mirror though :-P

Great series with a few technical flaws...
11 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Purefoy is excellent, I've been a fan since Rome. The supporting cast is also excellent, Creed-Miles does a fantastic job of being completely horrible, you truly relish hating him.

It's well plotted and written, the dialogue and exchanges are sharp and spot on, all in all a really well done series, I am looking forward to a possible second series if they decide to produce it.

Now for the caveats ---SPOILER WARNING--- The show was perfect up til the final reveal where they butchered the explanation and timelines. The CC coverage was established for the area, so there would have been footage of him entering the hotel and leaving TWICE, which would have been a flag, also every time an electronic door is accessed on a hotel room, it logs the open and close as well as the interval between and associates it to the key, so there would have been a clear log showing him returning, and the time, then leaving again. I assumed this wasn't brought up earlier because the "actual killer" was a professional that altered or modified the logs, this wasn't the case and there was no opportunity to fix the logs.

All in all it was a shame that an otherwise brilliant series fell apart at the end with a poorly thought out explanation.

Utter crap...
3 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This show was such a pile of steaming horse crap and I am actually upset...

I was looking forward to something akin to Penn & Teller where a reformed "mentalist" shows you how to identify and maybe even counter classic cons and manipulations.

Instead it was an hour of this huckster lying directly to the audience and epitomizing the very behaviors he is purporting to help you identify, his explanations, when he offers them, are couched in the same psycho mumble jumble that help them obfuscate the underlying dirty secret behind all of these manipulations, that they cheat.

Nowhere was this worse than when he "memorizes" the particulars of 300 vehicles on a car lot, then sends a salesman in to pick three vehicles at random and quiz him about them. He amazes the audience by reciting specific information on each vehicle and even an adjacent vehicle on one of them, because all the information is mnemonically connected in his super brain. To top it off, at the beginning he gave the agent a sealed envelope (that the agent signed and then held on to), he then asks the agent to add the mileage from the three "random" vehicles and look in the envelope and amazingly they match.

In the show I wanted to watch, he would then reveal that the three "random" vehicles were actually pushed on the salesman unwittingly (a classic card trick technique) and that he only actually had to memorize 3 vehicles and 1 adjacent vehicle to sell the trick, but he didn't. He maintained that not only did he really memorize 300 vehicles but that he knew from his super brain that their combined mileage would be X...

What a load of crap...

Anyway, anyone else that was looking forward to this show can save their time, it is awful and there are no honest reveals, that they blatantly lie and mislead rather than elucidate and illuminate means they are not above just using extras, staging entire scenarios or using the most mundane and blatant trickery, which would be undetectable from a home audience (like "driving blindfolded from memory), there are legitimate tricks for doing this, these guys probably just had holes in the blindfold...terrible show.

Human Target: Victoria (2010)
Season 1, Episode 11
Great show...bad episode.
9 April 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I hope the writer for this episode has his resume brushed off, it nearly ruined this fantastic show.

The plot is laughably bad and pushes credulity to the breaking point. Poorly thought out and full of holes, it made no sense and none of the supporting characters behaved in a consistent or coherent manner.

I love this show, and Jackie Earle Haley is wonderful Chi McBride and Mark Valley are a joy as well, up until this episode my gripes had been minor, but in this episode they blossom like ragweed in spring.

British royalty, not even married into, but of the royal bloodline, is going to be assassinated by rogue elements within her own security detail, while visiting the US? What was the writer thinking, at least make her married into the line, which at least is a little plausible. If they had been wanting to off the husband it would still have bothered me but not as much.

This is happening in the US, this is a dignitary of the effective importance of a visiting president, but there is no US security contingent. Why does the princess not pick up the phone and dial the FBI, identify and confirm her identity, and proceed from there, the US law enforcement is not going to dismiss a foreign dignitary requesting assistance in that situation...and on and on.

Aggravating episode, I sincerely hope this was a fluke...
