Delhi Belly (2011)
A fun movie but nothing to rave about
Delhi Belly is a fun movie but for some reason failed to live up to the high expectation I had from the movie. The language of the movie is atypical of a Hindi/Indian movie and that gives the movie a novel factor. The jokes were funny for most part though some were clichéd. The songs are appealing in spite of having a very weak connection/relevance to the movie's script
The story of the movie seemed to be the weak link. It appears as if the jokes/dialogues/songs were conceived prior to the story and a story was thrown around those pre-conceived jokes, dialogues and songs. Process in reverse: where the starting premise is a more original situation/story with jokes, dialogues and songs to support it should yield a better result. Case in point: Khosla ka Ghosla.
Bottom-line: the movie is ordinary but the unique treatment (atleast for Hindi/Indian cinema) elevates it to just above average.
Conviction (2010)
A movie that is relevant and worth a watch
The movie focuses on the justice system which has been in the limelight due to the high profile cases (Casey Anthony, Dominique Strauss-Kahn). This connection makes the movie more interesting as it gives the viewer a chance to reflect on the benefits and drawbacks of the system.
More importantly it shows the resolve of a sister to seek justice no matter what the cost. The movie shows how a sister uses her conviction that her brother is innocent to wage a long drawn fight to overturn his conviction. The story based on real-life is inspiring.
The movie looks clichéd in parts but the overall impact of the movie makes it worth a watch.
