The true story of a group of friends who ran one of the largest drug distribution networks in the world from an art gallery in Laguna Beach
26 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The film is a true story from here in Orange County and a documentary about how a little art gallery and spiritual commune in Laguna Beach ran by friends became the biggest drug distribution network in the world.

The interviews with the Laguna Beach chief of police, and defense attorney Michael Kennedy, before his death, plus the clips from Paul McCartney, Nixon, Reagan, Lyndon Johnson and Dan Ackroyd, and the reenactments of OC in the sixties, the stories of passport fraud, smuggling, prison breaks and living on the run, and wanting to change the world made you feel like you were there.

This is a story hinted at in books and other cultural artifacts of the time from the 60s, and was really waiting for this treatment as a film. The filmmaker did a great job, especially with the tone, look, and feel of the film, and the intensive interviews with those involved make you invested in their stories.

If I had a criticism of the film, the flow of the storytelling seemed a little jarring at times. That might have been because parts of the story may have been trimmed for time, or it might have been due to planning to tell this story in an unusual way, or due to not considering unanswered questions.

Most audience members had curiosity about the prosecution, and punishment, for those featured in the film. Only near the end are quick titles given showing the punishment for some of the members featured, but not the actual time served, the effects on them, or even what charges were filed. Likewise, the storytelling loop of Timothy Leary and his jail escape leaves him (presumably) in Canada, with no further follow up on what happened to him, or any liability to him or those featured here that helped him escape.

A confession of love that leaves two members joining together and starting their life together, which the filmmaker said was an important point he wanted to include in the film, seemed uncomfortably inserted in the film, with no lead up, or resolution after as to why that happened, or what the effects were.

I think motivation for all involved is an important part of bonding with those featured, and the inspiration to provide enlightenment to the world was brought up once and not resolved, when that could have been expounded on more.

Overall, a very enjoyable film that makes you want to learn more and leaves you thinking for a while. An important part of the history of the 60s, the history of Orange County, and much of what that generation brought to modern society.

Funny, well done with a few flaws

A funny film, loosely based on a popular play. Very funny scenes, and although the story might seem rambling at first, it's cohesively organized around one man's efforts to pose as Jewish to win over the heart of a Jewish girl that he's fallen for.

This film has a huge cast. Many of the cast did a great job, although Peter Stormare's strange British/Southern accent was noticeable enough to be very distracting. Some, like Rita Wilson and Jamie Lynn Sigler nail their roles impressively.

Joel David Moore is the star of this show and his scenes, even the ones that were very much improbable, were some of the best moments in this film.

Thor (2011)

Inconsistent

On the one hand, I generally support super hero movies. But how, in the early 1960s, a Nordic God became a modern super hero, baffles me. How Natalie Portman and Stellan Skarsgard got to be in a movie that seems above their level is beyond me also.

And yet, this film wasn't without entertainment. The plot twist, if you will, involving the dynamics of Thor's family, was well done without being over dramatic. The explanation for how Thor gets to Earth is not something you'll want to think about too much, but it works. The helmets, which look like they were designed for the Royal Wedding by Lady Gaga, were something to look at.

What worked best, for me, was the dynamic between Natalie Portman's character, Jane Foster, and her assistant, Darcy Lewis, who says at one point "I'm not dying for six college credits." Great and witty repartee between these two apparent friends. Whether intentional or not, the actions of Thor once on Earth were laughter inducing as well.

The special effects were solid, although I'm not sure that 3D really brings anything to the table here. Some of the acting, or at least the dialog, is horribly bad here. I didn't leave the theater waiting and wishing for a "Thor 2".

Avoid at all costs

I ended up seeing this film twice in the theaters. More on that in a minute.

This film made me realize, after seeing Beverly Hills Chihuaha, and Marmaduke, that "talking animal movies" is a sign of poor poor quality in films. They know that kids, and their parents, will be willing to pay and suffer through almost anything if it has a cute wise-cracking dog or cat character.

This movie sets a new standard for the worst of a genre, however. It really has nothing to do with the first film, and has a number of dated James Bond based gags that just fall flat. Some great talent went into the voices here, but those actors and actresses (I'm talking to you, Bette Midler and William Macy) should be ashamed of themselves.

Best not to think about it

This is a fast paced, interesting movie that has many twists and turns, most of them that you won't see coming. Angelina Jolie has never looked more confident and beautiful, and some of the ideas in the script are almost brilliant.

I say almost, because the more you think about this movie after-wards, the more highly improbable, and less intelligent, this movie seems. And, it only seems to get worse as the movie goes on, requiring the characters to do more improbable things as the movie moves towards the end.

I'd say that any of the Tom Clancy films, or even the Mission Impossible films, give you a better experience than Salt.

A fun, well made movie

Woody and the gang are back, with an interesting, and very touching, plot.

The entire movie is well constructed, and interesting, with plot twist after plot twist. I would not have thought that Pixar and crew could have outdone Toy Story 2, but this one gives that classic film a great run for the fun.

The film starts with a dramatic situation where some of the toys are scheduled to be thrown out, and Andy selects others to take to college. The toys to be donated end up at Sunnyside, where not all is as it seems. A great thrilling adventure.

Recommended for all ages!
