Dirty Love (2005)
this movies is so bad that turn good
after i finished watching the movie, my first impression was this is so bad. but after reading the comments here, which filled with hatred, i had to go back and watch it again.
this movie is absolute definition of vile. it filled with foul language, unflatering, though beautiful, female bodies. the script which was not that funny but more pushing the envelope.
the air-head woman that has talents and feelings. the white woman that talks like blacks. the generous pawn shop owner. and other unique characters, not only gave a glimpse of fresh air but also the messages about seeing the society in the unconventional way.
you can watch this movie either as dumb & silly or social satire.
Painkiller Jane (2005)
Not bad
It could have been worse. The plot was realistic and reasonable but need more factual details to be more convincing. There are a lot of interesting characters but the lacking of their background stories make them feeled more like props. The direction was foggy. It seemed like the director let the audience fill in the blanks. There seemed to be a lot more of the story to tell but it was left out, trying to fit the whole stories into the movie. This should have been a ten-hour mini-series or a series.
There were no romance or sexual tension (from what I got) and that was the good part of the film. I also like the superhero(ine) that has enough weakness to make her feel like a human. I probably like Jane more than Superman, Batman or even Laura Croft.
The soundtrack was lovely, it could be the best part of the film. The worst part would be the Vaugier's hair. What were they thinking.
The Last Man on Planet Earth (1999)
Refreshing
I had no idea why the movie appear in my Tivo. I thought the title was intriguing and it might be charged with some sexual innuendo context but this is not the case. Many people might hate it because they don't get it.
This is a very political movie. While women in the movie said, in the movie, that men were violent by their genes, the truth was opposite. In the movie, either men or women just made up the stories, to justify their actions. In the movie, women society supposed to be Utopian and peaceful but it filled with corruptions as well as violent crimes. The police eager to use their guns with empty hand civilians.
There were some good acting but most of it were not very convincing. The plot was predictable. But they were not the points of this movie.
I, Robot (2004)
Asimov's fans can skip it
First, visual looked real and interesting. No doubt about it. Acting was quite good Will Smith was not too overacted and Bridget Monahan nailed the character as it supposed to be.
The direction was annoying and confusing. Shia LaBeouf's character supposed to be a comic relief but there were so little of him to make it matters. There was no explanation of Dr. Calvin's love for robots. Everything was about, oh well, Will Smith.
The dialog was smart and witty but that's it. The story was nothing else beside shallow. It lacked of philosophical dept of Asimov's book. There are so many good movies about bad robot out there. We do not need another one of the terminators, really.
Dahmer (2002)
Fill in the blanks
I liked this movies, not because it tells things, but because it had so much blanks that I could fill.
This movie would not tell many details about Jeffrey Dahmer, we saw him on the news and probably know him too well already. Also, this was not the first movie about Jeffrey Dahmer. So may be that was why the movie did not show who was the serial killer.
The slow pace of this movies gives the audiences time to think about it. As the story progress, it cut back and forth between his time as a serial murderer and time as a confused coming-to-age homosexual young boy. Instead fill the story with details, it left the gap which I could fill story of my life in and could say "Hey, that could be me".
The one thing that the movie might actually suggested would be why Dahmer also ate his vitims. The makers were really trying to understand the serial murderer's state of mind.
There was some graphic, but just enough to get messages across.
Also the acting was fantastic. It worths seeing once, but it would be too painful to watch it again for me. For somes, they might need to see more than once to fill all those blanks.
4 out of 5.
Hulk (2003)
Not a summer action movie
I like the original story of the Hulk much more than the Superman or other superheroes. It was dark, depressing and ended with tragedy. Don't you just love that?
Now the movie, compare to other summer action movies, the Hulk is far more sophisticated. Might because it was Ang Lee who made it, or it was the original story. The Hulk may not be for youngsters even it was rated only PG-13 because those youngsters might not enjoy it as much as adults.
2 hours or so was painfully long, beautiful camera, beautiful editing, and the story was so dark. Forget about scientific facts, this movie did not make you believe, but make you think. Great casts, no one could have done better than that.
I expected to see a summer action movie, but the experience was quite opposite. It was not as 'fun' as Spiderman or X-men but it was definitely entertaining.
4 out of 5 stars. Go see it.
