I'm Not There (2007)
an amazing dream
This isn't a movie. It's more of a dream. Albeit, it is a wonderful dream worth having if you love Bob Dylan's music.
The film is very avant-garde and surreal. The story is not linear. Many different actors play different parts of Bob Dylan's life. The disconjointed parts are made cohesive thru the moods of the music and the emotion of the scenes.
Todd Haynes made some brave and bold choices with the way he wrote, cast and shot this film. Personally, I think it all works very well. It is definitely the kind of film that gets better with repeated viewings. I love it and can't wait to watch it again. Check it out!
And the Winner Is... (2009)
A Surprise for 2009
I saw this film at the Palm Beach International Film Festival. I walked in not knowing what to expect and walked out with a grin.
"And The Winner Is ..." follows several small town politicians as they run for mayor. Each one has political characteristics that we've all seen and have laughed at, such as one being a puppet, a dimwitted bully, a socialite, a lady's man, etc. In order to get elected, they must compete in a contest that resembles a beauty pageant (thankfully without the swimsuit contest).
The camera style is that of reality television. The humor is like "Best In Show" meets "Drop Dead Gorgeous".
If you like political satire or if you are looking for a different kind of comedy than typical Hollywood fare, "Winner" is your ticket!
Moonstruck (1987)
comfort film
"Moonstruck" is a movie that I liked the first time I watched it. I really liked it the second time. I loved it the third time. Now it is one of my all time favorites.
The humor is subtle but really good. The film offers a lot of warmth humor. the story takes place in a old school Italian neighborhood in NYC. Cher's search for love is enjoyable to watch. This film is, by far, the best job Nicholas Cage has done on film. The old man character is fantastic. He lights up the screen without saying a word. The scene with his dogs howling at the moon was fantastic. But, perhaps the best character is the one played by Olympia Dukakis.
The film's climax is a scene where the main characters have it out over a breakfast of oatmeal in the family kitchen. Exceptional direction and wrap up.
