Before Midnight (2013)
Best Romantic movie I have ever seen
Love stories have never been my cup of tea but this movie is on a different pedestal. Without doubt my favorite movie in this genre. The movie really kick starts during the lengthy conversation between the couple in the car and we get a feeling that they are not entirely happy with their relationship. But the conflict really erupts in the epic hotel room scene. That is one mind-blowing they are having, but I must say, something that every long-lasting couples can relate to.
Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy just nailed it. I think its by far best movie in the trilogy and I wish they make a fourth movie.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Unbelievable ratings
I can't believe that people rated this movie so poorly. A solid script, excellent acting, twists, thrilling sequences, emotions, it has it all! I mean, I couldn't.ask for more. I started with very low expectations but I was really impressed. Han Solo and Chewbacca deserved their own movie being legendary as they are. It is not the best Star Wars movie I have seen but its far from the worst.
Contratiempo (2016)
Improbable yes but very exciting
The plot might not be fully realistic when you think about it but if you suspend your disbelief, this is a very thrilling and captivating movie. Loved the twists and turns; it keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to end.
Vikram Vedha (2017)
Thrilling and Stylish
I have never really followed Tamil movies though I am from South India. I have been hearing from friends how Tamil movies have come off age and decided to watch a few handpicked movies. I was completely blown away by Vikram Vedha. This is thrilling and enthralling. I had goosebumps for the final standoff. Easily one of the best Tamil movies I have ever seen
Ratsasan (2018)
Overrated
Should be one of the most overrated movies I have ever seen. Background score and cinematography stands out but at the core, the script fails to capture the emotions of the characters. The investigation is hardly clever and brain-teasing. You know what you are expecting and there is a lot of your typical Indian movie "clichés". I have seen better thrillers like Anjaam Pathira which is more akin to a real life investigation
The International (2009)
I liked it
Watched this movie without much of an expectation..But surprisingly,I liked the movie. The movie does make a couple of political statements. This movie deals the negative side of capitalism..The premise is quite realistic though the visuals/presentation/sequences sometimes not so real..There were flaws in the movie which I am not able to recollect now..I especially liked the ending scenes which implies that everything remains the same, the same malpractices continue, when one person is dead another one takes over..Unlike most movies there weren't many unnecessary "romantic" scenes or bedroom scenes which has become a necessity in almost all Hollywood films though it has no relation with the script just like songs and dances for Indian mainstream movies. It didn't bore me at all..Overall a good watchable movie..Don't expect any special effects, graphic violence or noise in the movie..I felt it to be more of a political movie than a thriller.
Eskiya (1996)
Overrated
This is an extremely overrated movie. It had a very interesting theme to start with but failed to live upto the expectations. The acting and direction is pretty average and the storyline is way too unrealistic. The first 1 hour was exciting but the last 30 minutes or so was very disappointing to be honest. Overrall wasn't a pleasant experience.
Kutty Srank: The Sailor of Hearts (2009)
Just very good!
I had avoided this film for a long time thinking because of the controversies surroundering the national award it bagged. But I was to be proved wrong and was absolutely blown away by the film.
It is technically top class. The camera work is brilliant and the direction (story telling) is subtle & wonderful. The movie begins with an identified dead body found, washed ashore somewhere in the 50's. Three women from different walks of life describe their experiences with Kutty Srank, the protogonist played by Mammootty, to the policemen. The protagonist is a nomadic boatman free from the bondages of family, region & religion. One who wanders from shore to shore easily adapting to the lifestyle of the people living there. Even his name Kutty cannot be identified to any particular religion or caste. He speaks three different dialects in the movie-North malabar, Kochi and South Alapuzha. The movie ends with the dead body remaining a mystery. When one of the women, a mute whom Kuttysrank had married, asserts with certainty that the rotten dead body is not Kuttysrank, the film is taken to a whole different level. The film ends with no puzzles solved, no questions fully answered. It's a piece of art for sure.
The Green Mile (1999)
More than three hours of torture!
This movie directed by Frank Darabont has to be the most overrated movie of the last two decades. The plot is shallow, unrealistic and above all absurd. Not just that the pretentious and so called emotional moments in the film aren't moving and touching, but they are also laughable and ridiculous. The scenes featuring the mouse (Mr. Jingles),Percy Wetmore and 'Wild Bill' Wharton reminded me of the cartoons I used to watch in my childhood. To put it simply, its a bad combination of mawkish sentimentalism and make beliefs. I don't care if the film is predictable but the pathetic attempts of audience manipulation and superficial treatment should keep this movie out of the top 250 movies in IMDb.
Some of the scenes were too dragging, meaningless and hollow. Some others were too chaotic and deranged. Overall the film is a classic example of bad filmmaking. We cant really rate the actors as there is no scope of performance in such a poorly directed film.
Enthiran (2010)
Old wine packed in new bottle
The movie is nothing but old wine packed in bottle.A typical old style Tamil/Rajni movie with mindless songs, brainless action/fighting, Hero levitating and beating up 1000s of goons all alone without even being touched by them, loud background music, special effects which are not so "special" and very noisy, substandard comedy, larger than life slow motion introductions! The screenplay and story as usual was one dimensional. The ending/climax was easily predictable and clichéd. And there's absolutely no plot worth talking about. This film is certainly not a classic or milestone in Indian cinema in my humble opinion. What bugged me the most were the stereotyped comedy scenes like the scientist fleeing the crime scene ,after the Robot seriously injured a traffic cop, rather than helping him out. The comic scenes featuring the assistants who don't even deserve a cup of coffee from the robot would drive any serious film lover nuts. And what was the director thinking by casting Aishwarya Roy as a medical college student opposite a senior scientist who clearly looks over 50 years old? Even though the comic scenes were not very comical, the logical loopholes in the execution of the script are ludicrous and laughable.
From the high overall rating this movie received in IMDb, which in general has always maintained a high standard, its once again proved that Indians in general have poor viewing standards. The film is strictly meant for the die hard fans. But for others who take cinema seriously and as a piece of art, this just isn't worth the money! Maybe this is what Indian movies are all about!
