Heart of Stone (2023)
An action movie worth watching??
Watching this movie made me realize why i don't typically enjoy action movies - i guess it's because of a lack of characters i could relate to. How refreshing it is to see female representation at all levels of a true action movie.
The negative reviews you find here you wouldn't find complaining about james bond or mission impossible defying reality. Your thinly veiled misogyny is showing.
My husband and i both enjoyed this thoroughly and are looking forward to the sequel. The action sequences (thankfully actual action, not just throat slitting like the recent sequel of extraction), fresh story line and unique locations made me a fan.
Kudos to gal gadot for continuing to advance this genre.
She Said (2022)
Filmmaking at its best
Finally, a superhero movie I can appreciate.
A triumph in filmmaking that proves that you can make an entire film about rape and sexual harassment without portraying a single act of actual assault or violence, showing respect for the survivors. It begs the question of why any movie would find it necessary, or rather choose, to show a graphic rape scene other than for shock value, but certainly not for storytelling.
I love the way the film intertwines snippets from the protagonists' personal lives, just enough to establish a human connection, but not so much that it detracts from the storyline. Postpartum depression is also gracefully acknowledged and normalized.
10/10. Best film of the year.
The Square (2017)
Taken too far
Trigger warnings: violence against children, rape.
Started watching this because I enjoyed Triangle of Sadness, did not finish due to several disturbing scenes. The film could have made its point without going this far.
The film started out promising with moments that poked fun at modern day realities including flexible work environments (the father attending a meeting with a baby) and innovative street scammers. I wish directors and this one in particular didn't feel that they have to resort to the shock effect of violence to drive home the movie's message and illicit a response from their audience.
Cherry (2021)
Unexpected, hidden gem
An unexpected experience based on the rating and the brief synopsis. The film switches between raw, hard-hitting reality and dark comedy, maintaining its refreshing originality throughout. It struck me as this generation's Requiem for a Dream. Excellent performances, dialogue and soundtrack.
