Mission Majnu (2023)
Should've been in theatres!!
I usually do not write reviews after just watching a film or while watching one. This movie being one of the exceptions. I am quite surprised how well and sincere it turned out. Looking at the posts I thought it would another spy bollywood masala movie. Thankfully was not!
The direction in 90% of the film was simple, realistic and what was needed. I only felt the train scene and the end airport scene seemed too far fetched and un- realistically shot.
Sidharth Malhotra did justice to his role, so did Sharib Hashmi and Kumud Mishra as his partners in crime. But a special mention goes to Ashwath Bhatt for his portrayal as General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq. His acting was so on point had to google him. Kudos to the make up and prosthetics team too.
Rashmika Mandanna tried, did well as the blind wife but since this was her actual debut I believe they dubbed her voice as her Hindi isn't fluent which was required let alone Urdu. To be honest they should have casted someone that had the command in the language as her dubbing didn't do justice.
The VFX and sets used was mostly convincing and would make the audience believe it was shot in Pakistan, as most of the movie takes places there.
I'm not patriotic but this movie made me tear.
Would recommend everyone to watch it once.
Dil Bechara (2020)
A decent remake of Fault in our Stars
I would like to start of with saying. Though people will agree with high ratings since the demise of Sushant Singh Rajput, still feel need the of giving a honest review of the movie. Like everyone else who has watched Late SSR's movies, i too felt over whelmed when the movie started. To the extend that i had tears fall down unknowingly.
Keep all that aside. The movie in comparison to the original did not really have that same feeling ( and yes it would be compared to original). The main problem i felt as soon as the movie started was the main lead actress's (Sanjana Sanghi) voice and dialogue delivery. We do not relate and feel her pain as a Cancer patient, her struggle carrying the cylinder around, her facial expressions, the way she spoke. Did not really make you feel connected, sad or emotional. I feel someone like Alia Bhatt could pull it off or someone else who could portray the characters vulnerability better.
Late SSR, played his role decently, as the lover boy fighting his own battles, head-over-heels with Kizzy. You like and appreciate his character- the charm, smile and need to do anything. But i did feel some repeated facial expressions made felt unnecessary and not relating to the dialogue said. The connection of our main to leads did not seem as strong as the original or even independently. The only best part i felt was when Manny fell ill. SSR played that really well and the fact that he has a prosthetic leg.
From all characters i felt Saswata Chattergee's character was played most sincerely. You can feel he is a caring, loving and understanding father who is hurting inside. On the contrary, the mother's role was weird. At one point she had a problem with Kizzy's virginity and on the other end was okay when she lost it.
The music was good. A.R.Rahman as always. My favourites would be the title track, Main tumhara and Taare Ginn.
In total, it was a decent film. But not late SSR's best performance. The movie lacked the feels to make the audience connect with the characters. And felt rushed towards the later half. Still, worth a watch.
Extraction (2020)
Must watch! Ignore the self-proclaimed critics
Finally it's out! Glad it wasnt a disappointment. Unlike most Netflix movies, this one tops on Production, Casting, Direction and even the story (though many would disagree).
THE ACTION:
The action scenes are to look for. Nicely directed. The chase scene is the best,as it immerses the audience as a 3rd person in the event. Real action sequences between characters give it an authentic and grounded feel. Chris Hemsworth has done a great job. So does Randeep Hooda ( soo rooting for this guy! After the great hit he took for his previous release being shelved, this a great comeback! Underrated actor in bollywood). You get the works from choppers, to grenades- top quality action quite forget it was suppose to be an extraction not a warzone in middle of the city. Kudos to Hargrave who can bag this one to his high-profile stunt portfolio (with the likes of avengers etc)
THE STORY:
Joe Russo (found out after then movie) does his best in delivering a new edge to an action movie. With audience saturated by so many movies and not to forget now are self proclaimed critics hard to please it's really hard to make a movie with a good story. But I think Joe Russo delivers. People will compare and be like "oh this part this part that". I'll just take your phone and shoot a scene at the most. Then let's talk.
SIDE NOTE:
You got to give it these Directors, Writers, Production, Make artists a standing ovation as high stakes and efforts are put in. It's easy to sit back relax, watch and comment on a movie takes 3 mins at the max. But takes months of hard work, effort and times accidents just to make a movie.
DRAWBACK:
It's sad but realistic avengers ending. 😭
CHERRY ON THE TOP:
This is movie is available to you for just 10 USD/M (among a large library of entertainment). So stop complaining (lol). Also where would you get to see Hell boy and Thor battling it out.
And no I don't work for Netflix or the Movie people. Haha.
De De Pyaar De (2019)
Matured content with bad screenplay
This being the 4th luv ranjan movie, people would surely have high hopes especially since you got such big star cast. Unfortunately, wasn't much of a fun experience. The first half seemed long and dragged with Ajay Devgn's mono expression some of the best scenes end up being dull. He even barely had much to say in the entire movie literally and figuratively. They should've pushed to meeting the family much sooner and had more fun moments in it. It seemed to be too organic that it ended up feeling bleak and confused. Jimmy shergill was a waste when his punches are usually fun to see.
The only positive of the movie was its matured content and bold approach towards such complicated relationships that are considered a taboo even today in our society.
Don't go by the all the positive reviews, just two reviewers who seemed to be truthful to themselves. To add, the trailer is misleading with all the jokes in it.
Batti Gul Meter Chalu (2018)
Batti Gul Brilliance Chalu
Batti Gul Meter Chalu is a brilliantly well done movie in the genre of sattire, slapstick comedy that covers a very important social issue that even till this day is largely present in India, despite of being every citizens birth and legit right by the Govt. -electricity.
The movie covers today's business monarchy that misues its position in exploiting the common man. This has by far been the best movie in terms of its detailing and nuances there are so many aspects of a society that are brilliantly covered with each character and dialogue that can be easily missed.
The direction, dialogues, performaces and story all complicated in an entertaining balance. You see friendship, human behaviour, hypocracy, struggle and hope nicely knit into the film. Shahid Kapoor delivers an outstanding performance that feels so real and believable alongwith Shraddha and Divyendu. Many felt Shahid overacted but i guess these people fail to realise that people in our country are like this and do speak and act this way.
Its nice to see a new trend in industry coming out with movies that touch social aspects of societies across our country of places most of our Karan Johar made up world fans are oblivious of. Not saying KJo movies arent good but finally some realism in our cinema. Right from the script to execution to acting. I am glad they added that line in the court room drama when shahid says " mumbai mein rehne walo ko samaj naji hoga is bare mein" (something on those lines) which is so true. As this made the guy laughing behind me to stop mocking the film. Living in Dubai, i visit india frequently and at the second of power cut, im crying. Take a moment to think what about those people to whom this is a norm.
Mentions: Do keep a look out for Divyendu's on screen sister's expressions even though she was in the background especially in the court room scene- so onpoint, legit and entertaining. Lol.
Another mention to our narrators Kalyan and Vikas that satirically potray welfare and development. Who start of the story and finish it, wrapped up like a well knit comedy skit.
Pros: Shahids acting. Premise. Direction. Songs. Well executed script.
Cons: Bad effect in showing darkness as it looked fake and shot in light and added a filter in post prod. Divyendu lack of screen presence and feeling in the scene before the interval. I felt that the shot with the common people had more emotion pertaining to the issue. Last being the strong accent and dialect that were over used that felt repeated and hard to get.
The Nun (2018)
All hype! Left swype!
Before you wonder why the title. To clarify the movie to me felt like a over hyped tinder profile, which on seeing more seems cliched and boring. I hate to be paying alot and having to force myself to liking a movie. This expected just that. A big let down to tje franchise and the director himself.
It starts off with introducing the situation. Followed by the entrance of our 3 main characters. the first 20 mins seemed really slow and dragging. The movie lacked light! to the extend i got bugged with the screen. Hiding under the advantage of the dark the director tried to spook the audience but seemed to fail.
It had a few moments that were nice and obviously jump scares that were good. But overall seemed like a rushed project. The graphics of the nun and the boy seemed to fake to evoke any fear. The environment and the nuns had a nice intense eerie feel but the biggest let down was the lack good cinematography and back story or premise to make a it a classic. The characters seemed half heartedly done with no depth except for the girl.
James Wan seems to be cashing out on the conjuring movies only on the basis of hype. And is only in the cash than creating a classic. Which it could have been with such a good story.
Such regret paying for this. I recommend you wait for it to come on tv if you are a die hard horror fan. This movie is for the masses who enjoy cheap thril and jump scares rather than a good story n depth in the premise and characters. Ill still go back to watching the Excorcist any day.
Mentionable Scenes: The shadow scene first day the girl comes. The priest in the woods. The last few scenes the girl searches for the chamber.
Karwaan (2018)
A pleasant ride to self-realisation
Karwaan is a journey for three individuals that happen to be together, because of a tragic yet comedic mishap of two bodies. A rather unconventional situation created by the writer to tell a simple story and put across the little issues of our society today.
Karwaan simply tells us to "Breathe" and the writer/director by bringing this movie to us, lets us to just that. With the all the wa-wa-woom and glamorised cinema, this movie serves as a good break to real cinema. On the lines of October, with its simple, natural narrative, Karwaan lets you have a good time.
Avinash portrayed by Dulquer Salman, does a great job of portraying a worn individual forced by his dad to pursue not in his best interests. Mithila Palkar does a decent role as she plays the younger gen. Irrfan Khan as Shaukat, plays Avinash's un-usual friend, does an awesome job at keeping the movie at its lightest notes with his knack of effortless delivery in the most simplest punchlines. Overall you tend to forget its a movie, as each one wore their part so naturally, including Mithila's mother in the film, the goons, the girl Shaukat falls for. Kudos to casting couch for choosing the right actors and not just going for the pretty ones.
The Director very casually covers certain issues or differences that people today have in our society, without really making a big issue of it. Which basically is the point,-"you maybe right at your part- need not mean i should follow". And also too much of anything isn't good. And many other aspects of relationships.
Karwaan is a movie you should think much about, watch it enjoy it and let it drive by. The only backdrop i felt was the direction and screenplay. Direction seem overly simple and the screenplay a bit slow.
Go for it!
7/10
Brij Mohan Amar Rahe (2017)
A mindless saga
A well acted and scripted dark sattire comedy saga, that couldve been alot better. It started of in a good note, got lost im the middle and later gets you curious just to know how it ends. unfortunately the end takes a righteous turn, throwing the last hour out of the window along with the light heartedness comedy feel.
Not sure of yhe writer's intention, none-the-less you end up feeling for the main character, As he goes through alot while the rest seem equally or worse than him.
I personally felt he should have fled. Though i knew this would roughly be the end.
overall 5 stars.
Could be avoided nothing will be missed.
Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)
Epic..sequel!
Never been dissapointed with a MI sequel and this by far has been the best addition to the collection. Tom Cruise is super human lol at the age of 56 he still pulls off a great action sequence and does most of the stunts himself. This movie brings some of the old characters together, kind of enclosing the entire saga. And ended with a similar scene like the first MI cliff hiking scene, almost like paying tribute and saying "This might just be the end". Hoping not though. The direction was on point. The pace brilliant. I was always edge of my seat, so much so that my freind was like dude you okay?
Only drawback was it did get a bit confusing in the beginning and it got over so sooon! Henry Cavill seemed a little off and trying hard im the movie.
Other than that..its this years blockbuster!!
Sanju (2018)
Sanju- The Fiction
The film starts of with a narration and goes beyond. Showcasing glimpses of Sanjay Dutt sir's life. Unfortunately, the movie turned out to be as i thought from the trailers- An half boiled egg. Raju Hirani's past movies have been big hits and fun, entertainment movies especially known for their light hearted, dramatic, filmy fun take on issues. Unfortunately, though this movie might feel the stomach of the masses, falls short of being heartfelt, true to story biopic.
It seemed to be a soft cushioned, punch of reality, sugar coating circumstances and portraying them in a rather light manner, be it Sanjay sir's addiction, jail or mother's death. Thus leaving the audience less connected to such a great personality being portrayed by Ranbir Kapoor.
Another major draw back, was it only focused on Sanjay sir's drug and jail saga of his entire life, thus not being able to create such that humane presence of his character on screen. We do not see a journey, rather trailers of certain part of these journey. We do not feel the connection or struggle in the spirit of the scene. Ranbir manages to pull of the look and few mannerisms of the Sunjay Dutt, which any good mimic artist and make up team and pull off (having said that - they have done a great job in prosthetics) But failed to bring to life the larger than life presence Sanjay sir has. Hence, you get a feeling of just Ranbir playing a character and not the Actor (SD) himself.
I feel a biopic on Sanjay Dutty would've been best handled by someone of a more serious and real cinema background like Mahesh Manjrekar or Anurag Kashyap.
A major flaw, Is they showed Boman Irani in the Munnabhai MBBS snippet on screen when he was playing the father of Sonam Kapoor's character Ruby- Beyond logic.
Acting:
Apart from Ranbir's acting. Much talked about Vicky Kaushal is extremely good in playing the best friend/brother like character of Sanjay Dutt. And is a treat to see as he seemed to be the only one genuinely acting.
Sonam Kapoor was good in her small role. Boman Irani was wasted. Paresh Sir was good too as the father. But from what i have seen in interviews of Sanjay Dutt's father, he does not really play the true portrayal of Sunil Dutt sir.
Rocky Handsome (2016)
For the director/writer. To John Abraham.
This is the first feature film I'm reviewing. That said- i did enjoy it. Heard it is a remake of a popular Korean movie- which reflects in the screenplay a lot. Not really for bollywood audience. Slow paced screenplay with touching moments..backed by hardcore action sequence- typical Korean style. Really enjoyed it for John Abraham-this fits well into his genre. My favorite after Karam( which i hope has a sequel). The action sequence in the club and last scene are the highlights and wished there were. Hoping the director would take this forward to more sequels. With better supporting cast especially the villains and a smarter efficient cop. The villains brother duo lacked the intensity. A more in par and equal to John's presence would be a wow factor. Like i would like to see a second part with twin evil psychotic yet well versed in combat brothers against John. If taken further could be Bollywood "Taken".
The villain's henchman, played by Kazu Patrick Tang, is a commendable performance. Faster screenplay on the lines of The Raid, District 13 and equal powerful competition would have made this
