Red Dirt (2000)
Manipulative women will screw a man's life up every time
All of the reviews here I've read say absolutely NOTHING about the evil that the women in this movie perpetrated. The lies, manipulation, and self-serving calculations that were foisted upon poor Griffith turned him into the wreck that he is.
What's sad is that after all is said and done, his cousin who wanted to stay gets to escape to freedom, and Griffith ends up staying, shackled to a crazed, better-off-dead harpy when he had the chance to run off with someone who'd compliment his life instead of imprisoning it.
And no, I didn't like the end of the story, either, unless I mentally tacked on a new ending: Lee writes Griffith and finds out that Summer has drowned herself in red Mississippi mud and that his cousin tragically fell into the pit of white alligators (they look just like white chocolate, ya know...) and was eaten. Tragic, because she ended up poisoning the poor innocent creatures, killing them. So - Lee ends up moving back and Griffith and Lee finally get to lead their lives and love without any further interference from women.
If only that kind of ending happened more often.
Nancy Drew... Detective (1938)
2380 keeps being used in the movie
I've tried looking it up but can't seem to find any reference to the importance or usage of that particular number:
2380 - twenty-three eighty.
They'd use it like, "I'll bet you twenty-three eighty that..."
or
"It was twenty three eighty million miles away" or something of that sort, but always as twenty-three eighty.
Does anyone know what that term refers to?
As for the movie itself, it was just OK.
I always pictured Nancy Drew as more sure of herself and less bungling and helpless girlie-like.
Primer (2004)
Bad plot, bad writing, bad acting make for really bad movie
First off, I'm not some trailer-trash hick with barely a third grade education - I'm SMART, but couldn't make any sense out of the stupid, badly written plot. I went over their "explanation" for the time machine, and each time got more confused as to what the hell they were trying to say was happening.
I finally gave up, figuring it was some avant-garde "thing" that I was just supposed to "get". Fine. I usually find those "things" enjoyable. Even giving it a wide measure of suspension of belief, the movie made no sense.
Who was going back to get what and do what to whom and when and where and an ex-boyfriend did what? Maybe if they had explained what the ex did and THEN they explained what they were trying to do to stop it, but no - it was all that frat-boy argumentation that passed as dialog throughout the entire movie that kept you from understanding what was going on.
A horribly flawed, horribly acted, horribly filmed, horrible movie.
