The Virginian: Show Me a Hero (1965)
Trampas' Coming of Age
Great story line and good character engagement. Believable characters and not much melodrama, though still lots of good western action.
While returning from a trip to another town, Trampas has to decide whether to engage in a town struggle or just ignore it and get back to Medicine Bow. A legendary lawman appeals to his conscience. Trampas has a decision to make.
The Virginian: Duel at Shiloh (1963)
How Steve came to Shiloh
I'm a fan of the Virginian and I rate this higher than most because it is a great story line, builds up the character development for Steve, and has a great guest appearance by Brian Keith.
The Virginian: Crime Wave in Buffalo Springs (1969)
Slapstick. Elementary level buffoonery comedy.
Cute If you like this style. All characters are out of character-not at all acting like themselves. Lots of recognizable guest stars. The series is usually more serious than this.
The Virginian: Dark Corridor (1968)
Another Love Lost...
This was a good story. I gave it a 7 instead of higher because of how slow it moved and the Virginian's character was a bit, well, less than his normal full personality. Still, it was a nice story with a lovable damsel in distress and a comedic friend Jingo and I enjoyed it more than most.
The Virginian: The Secret of Brynmar Hall (1964)
Disappointing episode
As if written for a Halloween special, this story is just a disappointment all around. One of my least favorite episodes due to the stretched story line, nothing similar to the rest of the series, and the far fetched nature of the plot.
The Virginian: First to Thine Own Self (1964)
Unfortunate Episode
I love the Virginian series, but this show left a lot to be desired. Randy's singing is good (and genuine), and the story has lots of potential, but the acting, production, and continuity has to be some of the worst in the series.
It's extra disappointing because this story line was focused on Betsy more than usual, and she had a major part in the story. Unfortunately the actress seemed to think it meant she needed to overact.
For Virginian fans, this will be a decent show. But if your watching Virginian for the first time to see if you might want to watch more, choose another to start with.
