Wedding Crashers (2005)
Good for a couple of laughs altough more a 'stalker comedy' rather than rom-com
Owen and Vince have great chemistry in this mid 2000s rom com. There's some good laughs here and there but the movie is a prime example of how Hollywood really skewed and messed up the idea of love and romance.
I'm not a fan of the term 'toxic' masculinity but this movie is pretty much all about that. There's no redeeming arch for Owens character. Quite the opposite, he's set up to grow and learn from all his years manipulating women to sleep with him only to become an even worse person by the end.
It's a watchable movie for a few laughs if you don't mind the absolutely horrible take on 'love'. It's more a story about a deeply disturbed man obsessing over a woman and being a piss poor friend and a horrible person.
I Care a Lot (2020)
Really not worth the time
I Care a Lot is about a legal guardian who's a sociopath. Oh, and she really doesn't like men are are definitly not afraid of them (a point that's brought up continously but adds nothing to the narrative other than the character obviously has some severe trauma regarding it). She's not a lonely sociopath however, as all of her colleuages and 'friends' fit in that category as well.
She makes money, not by being smart, but by other people being dumb and incomptent. This includes the local judge but also the ex russian mob and anyone else who happens to be in the way of the lead characters ambition. Very convinent to say the least and extremly frustrating to watch.
The main problem with the film however is that there is not a single relatable or remotly likeable character in the whole movie. There is simply no one to root for, in any way or form, instead you'll probably be wishing the whole cast be killed off. Imagine sitting through 1½ hours of game of thrones but all the characters are Geoffery.
It does have some good acting, mainly by the lead actor but watching somone smirk like a psociopath gets stale long before the 1½ hours are up.
Finally, the concept is interesting but it's done far to poorly the justify being picked up by that reason alone.
PS. I saw this randomly on Prime and I really wish I didn't.
SAS Rogue Heroes: Episode #1.6 (2022)
Overal interesting show but falls flat in some regards
The show is an interesting take on the historic military genre and it was interesting getting to know the origin of the SAS and it's founders.
The tone of the show was somewhat hit and miss but my biggest gripe is the directing of some major scenes throughout.
As an example, in this finale Stirling is captured in an ambush in a truly silly fashion would it have been real. The same goes for the death of Lewes in an earlier episode which just didn't make any sense from an in world perspective. A lot of people probably won't mind but for me, temporarily bending the rules of the world you've built to fit an idea, is a big no no.
Band of Brothers Podcast (2021)
Interesting topic and conversations but low budget audio
I can't understand how a high profile podcast like this with big names attached to it, both in regards of actors and the series itself, can be produced by what sounds like the intervieweses calling in from their cell phone.
I understand that they can't all be in the same studio but making a podcast of this calibre but with the.audio quality of a rookie podcast hosted in a basement is such a waste of effort. I'm only on the second episode and there's no way I'll make it to the end.
This is unfortunate because not only is the series a historical piece of entertainment but the tidbits shared by the actors each episode is really engaging.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 9: The Marshal (2020)
Finally!
Now this is what I was expecting quality wise from season one which in my eyes was all over the place and a lot of times not very good in any aspect except the visuals.
Here you get amazing visuals, great writing, acting and worldbuilding without simply adding flair withouth substance like most of season one did.
The one thing that brings it down is just that though. In order to have the epic krayt dragon battle they couldn't just arm a bunch of bantas from the start and have it eat them which is just stupid but not nearly on the same level as the previous season.
Here's to hoping that this sets the bar for the rest of the episodes.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 7: The Reckoning (2019)
Insulting
At the core the show is really good. I mean it's a western/ronin epos set in the Star Wars universe, can't really go wrong can it?
Well, besides some poor acting and dialog this episode suffers like all the previous ones by incredibly silly decision making. The guild master (or whatever his title is) lets the mandalorian know that the plan was to kill him and take the kid. Really? We´re supposed to belive that he is that mentally challenged? In his escape in ep3 the mandalorian single handeldy offed around 20 mercs before his backup arrived and now the guild master means to kill him with 3?
Sure, the original plan might have been that they would kill the mandalorian once in town with the help of imperials but he then instructed the 2 remaining mercs to kill them before they reach the outpost when he changed his mind. However, if that's the case, that would mean that these 2 mercs have no clue what so ever who the mandalorian is or what he is capable of (or that his armor is literally bullet proof) which I find to be far fetched at best.
With that said, I am enjoying the show, I just wish they treated their viewers with more respect. It is after all one of the worlds biggest IPs in the hands of one of the worlds richest companies, I think we should be allowed to expect more than this.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 6: The Prisoner (2019)
Inconsistent world building and flat characters
So far, the biggest gripe I have with this show is its incosistencies in regards to the setting it takes place in. A lot of the time things just doesn't make sense other for the convenice of the "story".
I'm just going to list 2 out of several from this episode.
1. Qin is heading straight for the ship in order to escape the prison. Yet somehow the Mandolorian, who takes his time skulking and subduing 3 other charactes, makes it back at the same time. Did Qin stop to smell the flowers or have a friendly chat with some prisoners? I guess so.
2. The tracking becon is activated and held by a guard. Why would the strike force blow the space station up based on that that's where the tracker is? Shoot down the fighter pre-emptivly, sure. However, they have no idea who's on that station, it could be the guard or a bunch of civilians for all they know and they just go ham without even trying hailing them.
Besides immersion breaking flaws like those you also have flat and corny characters with avarage acting.
Unfortunatly this seems to be a recurring issue with the show, altough I've heard that the second season is supposed to be better. Here's to hoping because episodes like this are quite lackluster considering the potential of the show.
Klaus (2019)
Well produced but incredibly generic
Klaus has a really strong opening and premise. Sadly, everything starts to fall apart about half way through where it becomes painstakingly clear how everything will turn out. Down to the lazy romance, the obvious everything is great but then something will happen so it's not great (this part in particular made no sense, but I guess it just had to be there?) Followed by a happily ever after ending (which ofc makes perfect sense in a Christmas movie.)
The characters are all very basic. Especially the antagonists have no depth what so ever. They are just bad because they're supposed to be.
Don't get me wrong, Klaus is a great movie if you want some of that Christmas spirit, but it's far from being a masterpiece or even great.
The Confession Killer (2019)
Interesting subject matter but bloated execution
Just like a lot of other Netflix documentary series this show covers an interesting topic that is unfortunately drawn out way to long. It consist of five 50 minute episodes which could easily have been edited down to three.
It's like it was made for American tv where they repeat the same thing over and over to fill the running time and purposesly put off the actual facts in order to fabricate suspense.
