One Season of Good, then a sloppy mess
17 September 2021
Watch the First Season. Tight, fun, exciting. Good six episodes of short good Netflix melodrama.

The Season Two, nothing but a sloppy mess of characters with the maturity of fifth graders. Very poor.

A nice rating of 7 for Season one.

TWO for Season Two.

What happened?

Always time to cancel the emergency to talk talk talk
27 February 2021
Everything is urgent yet so much time for dozens of conversations of love, friendship, what you meant to me, etc etc. Endless CGI battle scenes. Too much diversion and splash. Seconds to live but time for more repetitive talk.

Not enough focus despite some very good plot that does all come together, well enough. If only we could be spared the endless extra hours of melodrama.

I really liked season ONE. A lot of elements. Season TWO started ok, but turned to a bizarre mess.

Not sure if I'll do season three.

It's just for the Lovecraft readers that want to see every homage to the stories. It doesn't really add anything though the Experiment 17 & 18 are well done. If only someone could pay the spooky stories with some quality film.

Excellent 5 of 6 Episodes, then ...
19 March 2019
The first 5 of 6 Episodes were very good, 7/8 ratings. Good fun police spy show and then the bottom drops out. You must suspend such belief in the stupidity involved by the characters that I am still crawling slow to the end.

Truth (I) (2015)
4/10
Factual, accurate? No matter, not riveting, .... boring.
28 December 2016
The intricate, the detail?

Important and accurate. Maybe.

But the story plods along without any pulling on the dramatic elements to be interesting and worthy.

Skip it.

To over-simplify: Is this an important point in 'truth'? yes. there are many more incidents much worse that this. Injustice, inaccuracies, mistakes. Most of which can and have been made into much better films.

this just does not click. Why? OK, the why is important, but the movie misses that. It's a boring step by step reason why smart people screwed up. But that's not entertainment, nor interesting. And not a good film.

The Korean (2008)
2/10
Korean incomprehensible
26 May 2010
The Korean is incomprehensible. And it isn't because it's in a foreign language, unless scrambled is a new tongue. Out of sequence scenes, twists and quick editing might be all the rage for Indy movies. But at some point it has to make sense or be of some interest. Both would be nice, either would help.

The Korean doesn't make sense and isn't of interest. A film can often challenge a viewer with trying to figure out what is happening, but it is the film maker's responsibility to provide the viewer with a reason to care. I got none of the above.

The acting is flat and emotionless. Did it receive awards? I find that hard to believe. Are film festivals just run by the businesses themselves? How can something this unwatchable be getting rave reviews?

Avoid this movie.

Serenity (2005)

Ignore the hype, enjoy the movie.
2 October 2005
Yes, fans of the series will love this movie, but any action, sci/fi or general movie fan will probably enjoy it too. A mix of science fiction, western and horror, it does require the suspension of belief and looking past any attempt for a movie to take itself seriously.

Firefly/Serenity is for fun. Yes there are the comparison with the overreaching Alliance authority vs. the independents, but this is just he premise. The point of the movie is to have fun and enjoy.

The character are not the stereotypes of the very bad action and science fiction movies of the last 10 years, and the action is totally enjoyable (and unbelievable). Malcom Reynalds displays the more typical traits of someone that is not sure of what they are going to do next, or even should do next. He's not hero or anti-hero, just hacking his way along until he can figure something out. He doesn't until he is left with no choice.

THe quips are funny, I actually heard laughter in the theater, something rare even for comedies these days. The crew is close, but in the snide way some friends and associates usually are. They won't show if they care and aren't really sure themselves until tested.

Forget the hype, this is the best movie experience you will have this year, if not in the last several years.

If you are fortunate to be a fan of the Firefly series, then this will be movie event to remember for quite a while.

Skippy (1968–1970)
Better than Lassie
23 September 2005
I always liked Skippy better than Lassie and Flipper. Most critics hated Skippy and the entire show. I have not seen it in 20 years, but the location was surely the attraction for me. It was quite a revelation seeing the adventures of a boy in location quite foreign to a Midwest town.

I doubt this would have much appeal to kids today, but you never know. Skippy was smart as a human and the exotic location of Outback Australia may not be as exciting for kids now as it was for me in the 1970s. I wish this was the type of show that would show up from time to time on one of the dozens of channels we have now. It would be good to see these old classics.

New Approach to Tried and True Formula
23 September 2005
The standard serial murder mystery elements are all here, from the intruding federal agents to the bewildered local population. The great new approach is from the context of the movie, that being a Mormon community.

The victims, investigators, and probably even the murderer are all from the small deeply religious town. How that plays out during the course of the murders makes for a new and excellently entertaining approach to the old mystery formula.

The ending may be a let down to some, no final ultra twist, but the film is superior for the journey.

Sin City (2005)

A comic book, not a movie
18 August 2005
I really like the movie, but it is a comic book. That is not a bad thing, and it has been brilliantly done. But it is not a movie.

Remember when The Superman Movie came out? "you'll believe a man can fly". That's the premise of a movie, movement/action/sound. The action in SIN CITY is mostly a transition from the comic book panels. Brilliantly done, but it is not a separate vision from the comic book, it is a reproduction of the comic book.

Those that have called this the best comic to movie venture ever are correct, if you want a complete remake of the comic. But shouldn't a movie be something different? Shouldn't film take advantage of its medium over that of a comic book?

The editing in SIN CITY is exceptional, but only in recreating the feel and experience of reading the comic. This then again, is not a bad thing, and I really enjoyed the movie, but it was not a different experience from the Comic. The characters did look like actual humans rather than the comic figures they are, and the casting and look of them was great.

The action though, the essential element a movie has over other medium, seemed to be the challenge to the film makers. How to transpose the still life frame of a comic to the thousands of frames of perceptually continuous movement of a movie? Well, they did it.

Even the most intense actions films had a deliberate stop and go edit to them that created a nearly seamless transition of moving from panel to panel in a graphic comic book. The movie is unique in its success in creating this effect and from a technical achievement deserves accolades.

But for me, the attraction of comics to film is to see a different representation of the characters, plot, genre and theme of the comics, while taking advantage of the medium. This is the same reason comic readers enjoy reading comics written and drawn by different people.

Each keeps the source material, but add a personal view into the soul of the characters and their world. The movies of Spiderman (especially #2) and Batman Begins have done this best, while Unbreakable did it from a completely different perspective (building tension though pacing-a film technique). These movies bring the characters and their world to film and let us experience them in a film, not as a panel by panel remake of an existing comic.

Enjoy the movie for what it is. A good movie brilliantly recreating an exceptional comic book. Not a great film using source material from another medium.

Not a good movie and a horrible end to a series
1 June 2005
Warning: Spoilers
The best part was the revelation by Yoda that he would be teaching Ben Kenobi how to communicate with his old deceased teacher. This actually explains his later sacrifice in the first movie (part 4). We now know that it was all necessary to prepare Luke to defeat the Sith. OR something like that?

The next best part was, no wait, that was the only best part. The rest of the movie was mostly some hyper kinetic space and light saber battles, none of which had a hint of mystery as to its outcome. I couldn't see anything of the multi million dollar detail on the sets, maybe a slow pan of the fantastic settings?

by the way, why in the immense expanse of space do these galactic generals keep parking every ship in their fleet as close as possible to each other?

by the end of the movie I was laughing. When Darth Vador took his first stumbling steps with his armor on, all I could think of was, "IT's ALIVE!".
