Three out of four ain't bad
10 February 2015
I loved the first three quarters of this movie but I think the ending was ridiculous and almost funny. The acting was great but the premise became ridiculous. All clues point to the aloof husband as a missing wife cast is investigated. The whole town helps to figure out the whereabouts of Kate. I was hoping for more aha moments but it became so far fetched it disappointed me. I must give it credit for being an extraordinary tale and it had me guessing all throughout. Ben Afleck did a superb job in a part that seemed made for him and Ms. Rosemund Pike did a great USA accent. Three out of the four stages of this movie is great.

Great Job and enjoyable
7 January 2015
This movie is great to watch for anyone who lived in the 1990's and remembered the fame of the turtles. My 27 year old son sat and watched with me. He was told the movie was not that good but agreed that this was a great and enjoyable movie. The action was regular Bay-type chaos and broken buildings. The characters made me feel as if I was back in the old days but they were also modernized by the action. I loved the elevator scene as well. Megan Fox and Will Arnett seemed too old to play the characters and hopefully they will be replaced for the sequel. Michael Bay kind of digressed to the Transformers for a few minutes and then came back to good Turtle Action! I would suggest you sit with a child who lived through the times way back when. You will enjoy every minute of it.

Nicely Executed bit of proper English fun
29 November 2013
This movie allowed me to enjoy the concept of retiring and enjoying a strange land. I felt the heat from the Indian hotel as I tried to figure out why they made such a daring move. The British seem to have a more opened mind about the idea of adopting the lands of the former British commonwealths. The pacing of the movie allows us to feel the way one of great nobility would deal with retiring in a land completely different than jolly old England. I would see this movie again. The actors are all over sixty years of age but they play the part of people with heavy back stories and you become absorbed into the way they deal with such drastic change. The Indian actors seem a it over the top and the way that everyone in the land seemed so friendly kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Still, the vibration of the heat and madness which is India is well represented.

Great Movie with Great Actors
29 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I think this movie is a refreshing change of pace for all directors to learn from. The careful quirky (Little Rascals/Peanuts) style allows a near fifty year old memories of being in love with a strange girl which made me feel free. The journey taken by the main young characters allows the others to grow into feeling colorful beings who were once bland and colorless. I would watch Wes Anderson movies along with the Cohen Brothers stuff any day. The point of view throughout the entire movie allows us to become young again. Bill Murray makes me laugh in anything he does. His shoe throwing scene was hilarious. It seems that the major actors playing minor parts allows us to become fascinated in the way the minor parts have major implications as the movies paces along. Not too crazy about the young love scenes but I remember being a young lad trying to figure out just what real love was about. The ending credits were a treat to a musician who loves school orchestras. I also loved the way the children signing made me feel as if I was a friend of Charlie Brown.

Miss-Taken
29 November 2013
This movie is built upon so many hateful stereo types of middle Eastern people, it even insults non Islamic people. The plot for the next taking of the main characters is so idiotic, it makes me want to barf! The main idea of him working in a foreign land where the writer makes as inept as possible would have any close friend suggest they vacation in the US and Canada for a while (LOL). The daughter learns very fast to drive a stick shift during a time of crisis when she doesn't even have a US license. Liam seems to be the only action hero left and at 60+, he still does it well. I just wish this formula would go back to the 80's and 90's. Taken 2 was just a chance to cash in on the fears of others. Turkey is not a black veiled woman country and the police would have intervened after the first grenade went off.

A waste Of Precious Time
31 January 2013
I was looking forward to see this movie after I heard the Oscar buzz. When I finally saw it last night I was quite disappointed. The story was not the most intriguing and it dragged on as if the writer was reaching for some point in a pointless dribble of a script. I am not sure why Hollywood loves to portray minorities as if they were one dimensional idiots who have no idea what is best for them. Homosexual themes are turned into bizarre situations as if being gay requires you to be a some out of control masochist. Nichole Kidman was disastrous as the leading lady and she was the shell of herself badly acting the part of a confused tramp. I wish I could turn back time and not pick this movie from Red Box. Cusack was the only actor with some substance even though his acting lacked any originality. The story was pointless and they offended anyone who searched to find some meaning from it. Don't waste your money or time by watching this Hollywood drool.

Great Movie with Great Actors
20 October 2012
There are days when you awake and turn on the TV and watch whatever is in front of you. This was one of those morning. I found myself locked in as the story developed. James Remar was so young and he didn't even look like himself. I read the information on the story but was intrigued as to how the actual story was developed into such a well told tale. The fact that it was told in subtitles didn't make a difference due to the great directing and greater actors. I wish I had seen this movie when it first came out because of the cinema effect used on some of the scenes reminded me of the other great fantasy movies of that time. Movies like Merlin, The Superman Trilogy, and Legend. I loved that glossy throwback effect from the 1930's. I think anyone would love to watch this and the simple magical tale it depicts. Howard seemed physically weak throughout the whole production and I am sure he knew it was one of his last screen appearances. I highly recommend this film.

Perfect Waste Of Time
17 August 2012
If you have had a hard week and you had a job that drains your brain and you want mindless entertainment, then this is the movie for you. Luc Besson must have been paid a ton of money for his half developed story. The plot was pretty predictable and I saw every twist coming from a mile away. The characters seemed underdeveloped and their actions were nonsensical. The small talk between the two leads seemed unrealistic in a life and death situation. The danger was at an all time low and the ending was not the best. Not a big fan of Guy Pierce's tough guy act. It seems the part was originally meant for a young Bruce Willis. My week was very rough and I welcomed mindless entertainment.

Thank you!

Great story telling, Superb acting, Terrific directing, and beautiful music. PSH is always under playing the role as artfully executed as possible. The mood of the movie made me feel as if I was there in that era. Minnie Driver has grown into a force that any movie would have to contend with. She creates a feeling of empathy with her method of playing a character. Though it is a true story, most of it is so well told, you feel as if it was a story better told in this film. If you are a true movie lover, you will say, "Thank You, God, for a great Movie!". Sit back and get ready for a subtle feast for the senses. John Hurt does the good bad guy role so well and I felt as if the bell hop stole the show. Please bring your popcorn and get ready to enjoy. This is a movie you wish will never end. You want to see what happens next and the irony of real life drama is so well crafted in this movie.

Great Movie For A Change
21 July 2012
Great movie with great actors. I felt as if I was back in high school again and I shared the coming out story of the jock meeting the nerds and having a great time. I certainly hope there will be a follow up movie. I hate films with the shaky found footage effect but this was done in an unabusive method. The only part i didn't quite understand was with them doing these wondrous feats in public and no one saying anything as they fly away from the supermarket. I enjoyed the way the story was told and the villain emerging from true pain of death and embarrassment. I was hoping for a longer story and ending was cool but a bit brief. This movie is a great change from the usual super hero story because it wasn't. It was more of a coming of age story about three boys with special abilities. I can see a sequel coming with the same actors coming back. Great movie to see and own.

The Twilight Zone: The Howling Man (1960)

A Timeless Tale Told In a Short Time
6 July 2012
I watched this episode a few days ago during the 4th of July Marathon and I was intrigued with how much they packed in such a short episode of 25 minutes. Carradine acted with such greatness that his few minutes on screen made the whole tale believable. I liked the way the lead actor HM Wynant did his best Charleston Heston impersonation to play against Carradine's reprisal of Aaron in the 1956 epic The Ten Commandments. The casting was brilliant and the directing was also well executed. The writer wanted a cross to be the item which kept the mysterious prisoner in his cell but was changed to the Staff Of Truth for a wider appeal. The religious aspects of the story is acceptable because the scariness of the concept. "U don't believe Him Do U?" was the best line in this tale and was also the turning point. I ending seemed a bit rushed but effective. I loved every episode of the original Twilight Zone series but this is one of the ones that stood out from the rest.

Spiderman Sputtered, Man!
5 July 2012
I paid good money to see this and I was truly disappointed. The acting was superb and the cinematography was better than the Raimi version, but the buck stops there! Sam was a better story teller and you felt you didn't need to know much about the character before watching the movie. This new version lacks the plausibility of the whole story. It seems the director, Webb, wanted to make the unreal more realistic and bring him into our world not realizing that movie goers want to be transported into the world of the fantasy and get a break from ours. Garfield played a brooding web-slinger who was more concerned about finding himself than the killer of his Uncle. I know this movie stayed true to many parts of the comic book, but the character development was lacking and was only compensated by the brilliant actors playing the key roles. Spidey Sense was nowhere in this, his ability to heal quickly, and his reporter angles were also omitted. Another thing that bothered me was the fact that all of New York knew he was Spiderman. All except for Aunt May. I must say that no matter how old Sally Field gets she is still too sexy to play Aunt May. The wrestling angle and the slaying of Uncle Ben were too rushed in my opinion. Lizard seemed too powerful to be foiled by the weaker watered down version of Spiderman. Maybe Mr. Webb believed he was more qualified than anyone else because of his name. Even the explanation of how he got bitten was never properly explored. Garfield has a James Dean like quality in his acting and you felt as if you were more comfortable watching PP outside of the costume because Spiderman's identity was never truly developed. I would recommend watching the first two Raimi Spiderman movies than this watered down hapless version. The ending left you dissatisfied as if you were given a Whopper without any meat.

The Twilight Zone: Living Doll (1963)
Season 5, Episode 6
10/10
Another Brilliant Episode
5 July 2012
The parallel between the names of the doll, Tina, and the little step daughter, Christie, both short for Christina presents a psychological paradox which the writer so cleverly included. You wonder if the doll was a psychic extension of the little girls hate for her new step Daddy and any doll would have served it's ultimate purpose. The tense atmosphere in the fractured household plays up the intervention of fate by introducing a scary magical doll which speaks mean words to the protagonist alone. We eventually become almost sympathetic to his plight as we realize the anger expressed by the smiling plastic doll exceeds the meanness of the Step Father. We reach a point where we have to decide between two evils and when the step dad wins out, we regret even have to choose sides in the first place. This episode pioneered the evil doll concept which Serling visited in his later series, Night Gallery as well. The only uniquely disturbing part of this story is that the doll doesn't move around in our sight nor does she change her plastic expression making the title of the episode a paradox in itself. One of the most memorable episode with a timeless innovative method of using a harmless object to scare the crap out of us. Casting June Foray as the creepy voice was a masterful move.

Better Than the Trailers
26 June 2012
I must say that this movie was not what I expected. It delivered more than what anyone in the theater thought it would. I was surprised that some folks walked out in the middle of it. This drama with vampires was interestingly contrived between truth and fiction. The story of the vamps was creatively interwoven with the events of Lincoln's brief life. I loved the way the story stressed other important parts of his tenure as our 16th president and the inclusion of real named figures and fictitious ones made you feel as if the vampires were an unwritten part of our country's unique history. The actor playing Lincoln even resembled him and Liam Neeson. The acting was great and the story telling pulled you into a place where you felt as if his life could really have been this spectacular. The special effects were up there with other bigger advertised movies and the fight scenes reminded me of Sin City and Sherlock Holmes. I think this movie is worth watching only if you don't expect a teenager vampire romantic Gothic romp. I am guessing the ones who left expected more sex and something more in the line of recent romanticized vamp movies.

Prometheus (I) (2012)

Too much hype, not enough delivery
11 June 2012
I would at first like to say that the movie was lit very well and the scale graphics were worth the 40 dollars I spent taking my sons to see it in 3D. The only problem was the movie itself. It was much to do about nothing. There were no surprises nor were there any true moments of wonder for me. When Scott did Gladiators I was intrigued by the way the story was told and I cannot say the same thing with Prometheus. The villains weren't clearly defined and none of the characters were developed enough for us to care whether they lived or died. It seems as if Mr. Scott had set out to do a really great job and the studio stepped in and told him to make it a bit of nonsense with action. Nothing was left for the viewer to resolve or figure out. When it ended i felt as if I was served a one course meal with no real taste. The actors all did their jobs and Fassbender stole the picture. For the rest of the 2 hours I just wanted it to be over. No new revelation peppered my brain and I was hoping something fresh and unique would wow me. Idris Elba did his best to be believable but he was no Yappeth Koto. The other "Red Shirts" were a non issue where you cared not if they lived or died. The scientists seemed like confused neophytes and I still don't know who was in charge of this mission. I wished they had more screenings before the release. I am guessing a real great movie is lying on the cutting room floor waiting to be released on DVD.

Terrible & Predictable Waste of Time
30 May 2012
Not sure why this movie was made. It seems as if every offensive cliché was abused to the max. This movie made no sense and it questioned the intelligence of every movie goer in the world. The kids were acting as if they were given a concept of a movie child and then allowed by the director to ad-lib (badly). The resolution for the kids problems were so poorly done and the premise made me wish I never got on this ride. The blaxploitation of the 70's seemed to be revived in a gruesome side story which made me cringe. Sam Rockwell played his part with a comedic timing which made him a stand out in the whole thing. I am not sure what the movie says about today's entertainment writing in Hollywood. Jonah Hill acted as if he channeled the "Greek" movie into collaboration of improbably scenes. I guess the use of Method Man legitimized the ethnic scenes or something. I am pretty certain this production was not vying for the Academy Awards or the Golden Globe. The predictable story line just got dumber as it went on and on. This movie was about 45 minutes too long.

Great Escapist Movie
21 February 2012
I am sure many of my fellow reviewers took this movie too seriously. Like the original "Nutty Professor", the story is weak but fun. I love the gags and the hilarity of the whole situation. My opinion of the movie is that it's a spin off from Bowfinger and the character Murphy played in it. The actors were superb and the flow of the story went well. I know making fun of overweight people went out when John Candy passed away but the attitude of the over-sized leading lady made us think of some women we personally know with the same sized attitude. The fun the characters had in developing the town of interesting people made me laugh. It was a type of Mayberry. I don't know what others were looking for when they saw this movie, but I was just trying to laugh. Murphy was successful in making that happen. Norbit's resolve to make a bad situation good was the way many of us felt at times at our jobs or with family. A comedy is comprised of situations which hit home with the target audience and this one made a bullseye. Terry Cruze was great as one of her brothers. Murphy also allowed other comedians to join in on the fun like Eddie Griffin and Cat Williams. The music score was great as well. Get your popcorn ready and laugh tonight. Life is too serious.

Non Dark Worthless Exploitive Ridiculous
27 January 2012
I love a great scary movie. It invigorates me and i get an excuse to squeeze close to my wife. I rented this movie and thought it would be a roller coaster of shock and horror. Instead, I was shouting at the screen about how stupid this feature was. I kept hoping a little sensibility would emerge from one or more of the characters. A hope to no avail. The original 1973 version was a great movie and I was hoping this one would utilize some of the techniques Del Toro is famous for. The plot made no sense and the reasoning and common sense was absent just as the AFRAID part. I sometimes marvel at how too much money and enough yes men could make a writer/director make such worthlessness. Holmes tried her best to really act through this dribble but all of the actions and reactions of the characters made you want to just burn the DVD. The creatures were over exposed so much it seemed they were afraid of the dark. The adults seemed to have had a pow wow to contrive the many ways they could leave this girl exposed to these creatures. I honestly do not see any redeeming value in any part of this film except for the opening sequence. A molar extraction is more pleasant than this experience.Hollywood should be ashamed of them selves.

Not much Fright For my Night
31 December 2011
I had high hopes for this movie and I ran home from the Red Box to watch it. I had glorious memories of being in my 20's and seeing this movie with my fiancé. Now my wife of 26 years, I was grasping for touches of the old thriller which made her cling to me until the end of the original Fright Night. Instead, I got a not fully developed hurry up version. It lacked any of the newness the original had. Ferrel seemed as if he was phoning in his performance and the development of the characters was abandoned as if the director left it up to the original version to be our platform. I'm not too sure why they decided the success of the 80's version could be out done by a synopsized poorly developed watered down version. I believe if they stuck with the "Boy Who Cried Wolf" theme, they would have had as much box office success as the original did. This a definitely a missed opportunity. By the way, what's up with the Evil Ed rewrite and the creepy associate?

Formula love story with a good twist
17 December 2011
I love this movie. I know it's formulaic but I loved the way the story unfolded. The lead characters seemed as if they all knew each other and they played well together. It wasn't the best cinematography but the story moved on rather well. Every time I felt like pausing the Netflix movie, it went to another surprising sub plot that I sort of didn't see coming. The religion solution was a pleasant twist as well. I think the simplistic way of portraying the emotional ride a cancer patient was tastefully done and is universal. My favorite part was the car suicide scene. It made me laugh and I am usually very cynical about forgetful scenes like that. Instead it drew me into the heart of the love affair. I think this is a great movie to sit down and watch with a significant other.

Artsy Fartsy But Good
10 December 2011
I quite enjoyed this film. Miranda July made a unique beautiful film. It has a lot of inexplainable situations which seem to ring home with many viewers. Her quirky style reminds me of "Lost In Translation". I loved the fact that there was never a dull moment in this. Paw Paw was the weirdest part to me. Still I felt as if he made the movie even more attractive in the synchronism of the characters. The dead pan style of the writer, actor and director (July)appealed to me in several ways. The pace slowed me as if I was also being controlled by the wave of a hand. Movies like this takes a special kind of viewer like someone who can tell the difference between Columbian and Jamaican coffee. Writing is almost poetic and ludicrous at the same time. I felt as if Woody Allen was reborn through her. If you like stuff like "Being John Malckovich" you will love this film. I must admit though that sometimes it seemed as if the writer just merged many concepts into a movie and left it up to us the audience to interpret it. Then again, the Beatles did the same thing with music. Hope you like it too.

Watered Down Acting
17 November 2011
This was the biggest waste of time for me. The acting was not the best and the storyline was quite lacking. The love story was dumb and the morals made it difficult to root for the protagonists. Mr. Pattison did a good job in playing the lead but I wasn't into the story due to the concepts and the way the plot line moved. Reese looked as if she should have been playing Pattison's mom and her acting was also lacking. The only highlight of the whole movie was the bull elephant. Story just got more and more ridiculous as it progressed. The resolution even left me feeling as if I should get my ticker back and somehow get the two hours as well. The director tried to make the movie epic but the story was too small and well told in the book to be disrespected like this.

Attack My Funny Bone!
2 November 2011
This is one of those movies a true movie lover can sink his teeth into. The characters are redemptive and likable. I love the campy thrill ride the writer gave us. It was like the Goonies set in 2011 with a bit too much cursing. I truly feel that this movie would have done better if it was released bigger in the US because we cannot associate with the real life situation in South London of the muggings and gang activity. The usual poetic flow of this writers method of presenting stories like this and "Shawn of The Dead" is a treat to watch. I am not sure why many don't like the movie but I must defend it by saying it is one of the best movies I've seen this year. I laughed out loud so many times I thought I would lose my voice. The mixture of great lines and great young actors should have been better received. Maybe if a few minutes of a remorse scene and more explanation as why they were mugging people would have made them more appealing. The young lead (Moses)has a scowl like Mike Tyson and you feel glad that he is on your side. No one had to explain away Good Fellas and the gangs in it to make it a hit movie and i really don't see it necessary for this film either. Watch it again with a good movie partner and have a great ride of terror, irony, and humor.

Bright Delightfully Sweet Movie
1 October 2011
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It was full of life and the premise worked out in an original way. I also liked the many speaking parts they gave to the Black actors of the time. They weren't stereotyped to the extent where it became offensive even for today. A simple story told in a sweet well written way makes you feel as if you were brighten by the whole story. I loved the contrast of New York and Old Sharon. Movies done in those times portrayed an innocence which we all lost in the big Hollywood productions of the past 30 years or so. Ginger Rogers didn't over act as she usually did and the plot didn't borrow from the popular "It happened One Night" as did other screw ball comedies of that time. I also loved the small dance scene and the trendy whistling the college students did. Get with your loved ones and put on an old movie from TCM and enjoy the types of movies which leave you feeling good.

I Loved Love Me Tonight
12 March 2011
A mid summer night's dream is what this inventive and thoroughly entertaining movie reminds me of. I love the frolicking and the great acting. I don't know how the director was able to do some of those shots. They seemed years ahead of their time. I was also impressed with the music. The songs were terrific. My favorite was Mimi. The discussion of class and sex was quite modern for a film done in 1932. It just reminds me of the verse,"there is nothing new under the sun". Some of the almost nude scenes were done in taste and the deer chase was politically correct even for this day and age. The straight forward story enticed me into believing the fantasy mixed with reality. I loved this film and would love to buy it on DVD. Nelson Eddy must have wanted to play the part of Maurice. Myna Loy was stunning in this also.
