Cindy (1978 TV Movie)
10/10
A perfect 10!
26 May 2003
I remember this gem very well. I believe it was filmed on video stock (like the soaps). I think it is feature-length, although it moves so quickly and it's so enjoyable that the time flies by as you watch it. I cannot understand why it is not available on DVD or any other format.

Charlayne Woodard does a fantastic job portraying a modern day Cinderella living in Harlem. Well, its not quite modern day, since it seems to be set back in the 1930's. I love her constantly sweet disposition in spite of the abuse she has to endure. And we see that it pays off in the end.

The supporting cast is wonderful.

I don't consider myself a fan of musicals, but the songs are really catchy and great to listen to. Ms. Woodard proves to be an excellent singer, as well as Nell Carter and the rest of the vocals.

I had video taped this off of the Disney channel in the mid 1980's and I last viewed it around 98, but then I loaned it out and it was last seen. As I viewed it though, I realized that, in spite of being made in 1978, it doesn't have that "dated" feel about it and has actually aged very well.

This would be a welcomed treat to watch for any age, especially in these days of horrible "family" TV programming. This one gets 10 out of 10 stars.

The Savage Bees (1976 TV Movie)
8/10
Best of the Killer - Bee movies.
20 May 2003
I remember seeing this movie on T.V. as it was starting back in the 70's and being just too lazy to get up and change the channel thinking "not another killer bee movie". I'm glad we didn't have remote controls back then, as this proved to be very good little made-for-TV flick.

First off, the movie does a very good job with the "science" aspect, explaining how the very aggressive African Killer Bees are making their way to the U.S. and are almost unstoppable. Also, the cast does a very good job in building suspense and empathy in the characters they portrayed, with the strongest by Gretchen Corbett as the lead female character, with the weakest character being the sheriff.

In spite of being made in 1976, this movie is surprisingly not all that dated in look and atmosphere. The pacing is good and the effects are fine for this type of movie, although, with all of the computer tricks available now, they could have enhanced some of the final scenes. But, again, the performances are good enough to make up for any short comings in the effects department.

I recently dug this movie up in a box of video tapes I had recorded in the 80's and decided to put it to the real test. I invited my 13 year old son in to watch some of it with me, and after 15 minutes or so he was hooked and wanted to watch the whole movie.

It seems that they never show these good old made-for-TV movies on T.V. any more, so a DVD release would be nice. This one gets 8 out of 10. You will forever associate the Voltz-Wagon Bug with this movie.

Squirm (1976)
Absolute Best of the 70's "Insect" movies.
13 May 2003
Reading some of the negative reviews for Squirm, I can't help but wonder if some people tend to prejudge it just because its "one of those 70's bug flicks". I saw this movie at the theater when it was first released, and watching it now on video, it still holds up today as a very well made film.

The set locations were perfect for giving that "small town down south" feeling. And, though the acting by some of the locals left something to be desired, I thought the main characters did a very good job, especially considering the type of movie this was. The music score was terrific and gave the film some great moments. The photography was very good, and probably one of the best using low-light scenes with only candles. And the special effects hold up very well by today's standards.

O.K., I'll point out a few negatives. Some of the dialog is hilariously bad, and tends to stereotype "southerners". Of course, as with most of these types of films, the science doesn't hold up, but thats why its called "science FICTION".

In closing, I can highly recommend this movie to any fan of sci-fi-nature-strikes-back and horror movies. But please, watch it with an open mind- you'll enjoy it better.

Definitely not MST3K material.
