Normal drama and excellent story telling
Aishwarya R.Danush, gotta mention her name first coz she deserves it. This movie is a "my sassy girl", "moment to remember" to Indian cinema. If I was a director the cult status of "kolaveri" would have made me to redo the script. nut man! she is a man and a brave woman, the movie (or journey) in remarkable and i warn you this story can be felt only if you travel through it.
Few may wonder what makes the movie so great? As you ppl ritly know our heroes seldom die jus like Hollywood and this is our PS I love you.
By no means I am comparing the stories of the movies I quoted above, its just that I felt the same lump in my throat while watching this movie.
There is something more than bollywood in India and we call ourselves as Tamil, telugu, malayalam, kannada and bengali etc (satyajithray!).
If you have time and heart do see our movies including this. Its my humble request.
The Changeling (1980)
A simple, gripping, chilling story
Kindly skip the fourth paragraph if you don't like spoilers.
I accidentally went through the IMDb page where I got a glimpse of The Chengeling movie. The movie was 30+ years old, plot was appealing and so was the reviews. Needless to say I saw the movie at once and now its in my horror library and I wouldn't rank it for the simple reason that its story is not fresh any more and cant be compared with any of its contemporaries.
Yet this movie will seduce you! from frame one; for its simplistic still power acting and direction. Like any other vintage movies this movie too travels on the sensible script and acting. but then, the camera, music (at times loud), and editing sets the right tone from the beginning.
Even the pace of the movie is questionable for first 20 minutes or so, but then the drama grips you till the end even though its a predictable yet likable one. its one of those gems which can set benchmark for a decent horror movies and I will call it so coz there are some spooky moments which are scary even if your lights are on and you have a accompany watching the film.
"Spoilers ahead" - plot
The first scene starts with an accident where Jonh's (George Scott) wife and daughter are killed. He moves to a town where he teaches music in a university. Claire, a local women working at the historical research center helps him to lease a old house. john encounters unusual sound and movements and later comes to know the house is possessed by a 6 year old boys spirit. on further exploration he finds out the startling revelations about the boys death.
Verdict: watch it for its simplistic plot and powerful performance.
The Grapes of Wrath (1940)
This ain't a masterpiece but this is the best
Masterpiece
I am from India and just thought the whole world is/was rich except India. Westerners gamble, Middle east means luxury and summers are snowfall everywhere except India. I was wrong. I was terribly wrong. Hunger can cross boundaries, language, caste and creed. This movie isn't any technical gimmick, even may not be faithful adaptation of the novel but its just fine. When whole world thinks Hollywood is just rolling cars, naked breasts, some sex and violence then and there comes few movies to slap us right in the heart and say "you ain't seen nothing yet".
Coming to the movie it may be sad, cliché and depressing but believe me folks this was shot in 1940 and as a close tracker of 30's and 40's world movies this was a fresh movie at that time and movies like this (pursuit of happiness)can put European movies to shame (no exaggeration). If I had a chance to remake this movie I can do it in universal language (silence). Its gripping, honest and shattering.
This ain't a movie to watch with a pop corn and a coke. It demands more than that (your heart). Skip it if you are looking for an entertainer. Otherwise it's the best and better.
Unbreakable (2000)
UNBREAKABLE - A Lay man's perspective
Well if you ask me whether I like the movie or not. I don't know!! but believe me many would say the same words. Of course Like all manoj night shyamalan movies there is Philadelphia, a snail paced script and some twist in the end. But then when you want to see a thriller it should be a roller coaster ride. Unlike Hitchcock or Spielberg this story spends time (more) time with its characters.
Nothing spine chilling but no crap too. If you are looking for some jaw breaking thriller movie sorry you are in the wrong place. However, this movie delivers few good scenes which are shyamalan trademark. you may say I am tasteless freak but excuse me there is no two way to script thrillers. if its engaging then its good If not then its not. This movie scales in between these extremities.
This could have been better in all terms Including camera, script, lighting, etc. But direction was commendable and characters looked real. One last request to few people who criticized the reviews for under rating it. Excuse mates if 90% don't go with a movie it's bad movie there's nothing to brag about your MQ MOVIE quotient claiming your far superior understanding of the movie.
One said camera was good!, the other said script was OK and the other said music. but good movies come as a wholesome package there's no going back in that.
I disappointed and i don't hate this movie but don't love it too. sorry if i am wrong.
Tourist Trap (1979)
Its a slasher fest at its best...
Slasher movies started may be 30 to 35 years before this movie but believe me this one among those pearl that will stay longer after you turned of TV set. Especially if you are a person easily scared this is the movie for you for which you wouldn't have stomach to take it full. Even after so many years the movie hasn't lost its charm and thrill.
No blood no gore but the thrill will for sure chill your spine out. the movie starts with the bang and it stay with the same pace till its end. BGM is nerve cracking and i remember this was the one copied in many Indian movies those days. Kings favorite? No wonder why... thats the only reason i wanted to see this and it didn't let me down. "Don't turn off the lights"... coz you wont find Enrique but may be a smiling doll sitting right behind you! beware. not for the lite hearted...
Two thumps up and i am going with 8 out of 10 which is pretty low but still i preserve my ratings for Dramas...
State of Play (2009)
A play quite engaging
A Blackman and a pizza delivery guy are shot on some alley in the mid night by some unknown man. Russell Crowe is a newspaper reporter. His friend and a congressman Affleck has a troubled married life due to his extra marital affair with one of his researcher named Baker. Baker meets a fatal end which no one knows whether to call it a murder or a suicide. While Affleck knocks the door of his friend Russell crowe to put him out of his misery, Russell with a small time blogger Della Frye (McAdams) starts his own style of investigation only to find out a true mystery which links the murders of black guy and pizza delivery guy to the death of researcher baker.
Russell Crowe justifies his screen presence with his acting and all other cast do a decent job. it has every little formula of a typical thriller and nothing special. despite all this the movie works and some what succeeds from keeping the audience in dark till the end.
Go for this one. This may not be an instant classic but sure is a good entertainer. I am going with 8 out of 10 and a thumps up for state of play.
Gladiator (2000)
A movie with heart
Thousands things have been already said about Gladiator. is there anything else left to say about this movie? definitely yes. there are three kinds of movies in this world, first one is copy work from other movies or novels or history, second one is a complete fresh idea or a fictional work and third one is a combination of both. well gladiator falls under the third category.
The pace of the movie is decent but very apt for this kind of story. A journey of the man, how he see his world changing, collapsing, betraying and at times helping. We get more involved and impulse when the movie rolls on just because we are more informed of so many things which the man (gladiator)in the screen doesn't seem to know. We feel more painful than him, more nerve cracking than him and more betrayed than him.
Few people love violence, few love sentiments, few love fictions or history and some more people love romance. put all this people together to watch this movie and they will say that they had their part in it. some times i keep wondering what happens now to the Rome when the end credits role, making me to question my IQ and convincing my heart saying its just a movie. well its not so!
we always say the best is yet to come. gosh we are wrong , this is the best and better. If you haven't watched this movie then stop reading this and start watching it and then come back and read it once again.
waiting for another master piece from this team..
Forrest Gump (1994)
A movie with moral
Tom hanks is just perfect guy for this role. i haven't seen many movie which has its heart and brain working towards the audience as this movie does. We left fooled, amazed and sad at times with the eventful life gump goes through. sometimes you feel hatred towards gump's slutty girl friend and sometimes you say its just fine.
Forrest gump is a dumb head, hard fool and non practical guy for most the people inside and outside the screen. but then when the movie ends we keep thinking why we don't have a heart like that. which cares, not cunning, not judging people, not selfish.
If you ask the story then its just a one liner. A good hearted man travels through the ups and downs of his life, but for him both means the same or none. camera keeps us engaged and direction is picture perfect. every one wants to be him. its no preaching but a lot of learning. its more a lesson than a movie but here the text book is the man himself.
good work and keep it working this way. worth watching more than one time.
Inglourious Basterds (2009)
No price for guessing its of course Quentin Tarantino's movie
oh boy, from the font, its color, the BGM, camera and blood drenching action - its what you call brand Tarantino movie. apart from this you do have a story, that too an historical story loosely based on Nazi era. inglorious basterds !! are group of people deployed to weed out Nazi in germen occupied France. brad Pitt is one among them.
a Jew girl's family is hunted down by a Nazi "Jew hunter" !! she wants her revenge on the hunter and even gets opportunity now. but a brave Nazi soldier cum actor in a movie called "nation's pride" is in love with this girl.
There is another plot of our fuhrer Adolf Hitler at 1944 wants to see "nation's pride" preview in France. the cinema is owned by the Jew girl. the hero of the movie is Nazi bravo who killed 300 enemies in a battle and basterds have plotted an assassination against everyone.
with all the twist, wit and blood the movie ends. its fictional but funny. despite directors bloody effort we keep remembering glimpses of some other movie like downfall, cinema paradise and so on. but story unfolds chapter wise like you read in a novel similar to pulp fiction yet interesting. although the dialogues are lenghty they are engaging and some nail bitting scenes are there for first time viewers.
its a must watch for all movie buffs for its fun and fantasy. only Tarantino can getaway with such a kind of story. but don't take anything seriously the movie is just funny and you will realize that long after you left your seats.
The Crypt (2009)
awful casting - horrible sreenplay
this is the lowest rating anyone can give to the movie. believe me we may have seen far better scary, sexy and sensible low budget movies than this. well here is the plot (if you like to call it so) bunch of crooked amateurs crawl into a crypt which is haunted!!! by the spirits!!!!! every one gets killed as expected. rest is with held for my own reason. here is a glimpse of some sensible scenes from the movie.
trapped inside the 80 years old crypt hero finds a manhole with handle, the gutter is powered by flashy lights, two inter connected rooms in the same level - one is filled with sky high water and the other has water just above your neck, there are doors locked with the keys kept upon it... the ghosts looks scared not the actors, quite possibly due their so called acting??? casting is awfully horribly. see this movie at your own risk. as the movie tagline rightly says Some things are better left buried... its quite true for this movie.
