Parasaito Ivu (1997)
Not for the video game generation.
~~~I only vaguely remember the playstation game this movie is related to. I have never read the original novel. However, I have sat thru the experience of this DVD, & I must say that it is an interesting film indeed. I like the fact that it takes some real, tangible scientific data, & uses it for the basis of a well-written, well-acted piece of cinema.
I thought that the relationships were kept simple enough to allow the audience to draw their own conclusions, yet were complex enough to keep the audience guessing as to what those conclusions should be. This gave a dynamic to the relationships between the Drs, & their respective patients, as well as the links between all of the main characters.
The camera & light work was exceptional, & I look forward to watching the movie again, just so I can pick one aspect to focus on at a time, allowing me to absorb them systematically.
I recommend Parasite Eve to anyonwwe,without a doubt is one of the best foreign films I have seen in a long while.
A++
The Butterfly Effect (2004)
Pleasantly surprised by a movie that was questionable.
~~~I sat through Butterfly Effect last night, & not once did I have to stop myself from saying "DUDE!" The story was engaging. The actors, while none are ready for an Oscar, were convincing & well suited for their roles. And the filmmaking was admirably done.
I went into this film not expecting much. But the idea behind it intrigued me, & there wasn't much else playing in town, so my wife & I went ahead & bought our tickets. +++SPOILER+++ It started out with the fairly common "in the middle of the action" scene that frequents movies with time-travel themes...but rapidly takes off to get into a solidly entertaining story.+++SPOILER OVER+++
And for all of the people who use "Ashton SUX" as their main reason to dismiss this movie, take the time to watch it first. In about the first half hour of the movie, he isn't even there...and the younger version of his character plays the role very well...especially in the later episodes.
The approach the filmmakers take to chaos theory & its "ripples in a pond" repercussions is well thought out & presented...the thought that every small change in the past would be reflected in everyone's life from there out is one that could use even more investigation.
I don't think that anyone who sees this movie can say that they didn't get their money's worth.
"My turn for the Magnum."
Braindead (1992)
From Braindead to Lord of the Rings!!! Jackson is genius!!!
~~~I had inadvertantly rented both Braindead/Dead Alive & Meet the Feebles at separate occasions and never made the connection that they were both directed by Peter Jackson. After seeing the Fellwship of the Ring I decided that I wanted to know more about this director, & started to collect his past films. You can imagine my amazement that a guy with films like Bad Taste & Meet the Feebles on his resume was chosen to shoot the epic that is LotR. but after watching the past PJ films, I am convinced that the man is a genius. He has fun in every film, & tells an entertaining tale. I think that he is, before all else, a great storyteller.
The thing about Braindead that strikes me is that it is, at heart, a love story. So there happen to be a few bumps along the way to romance...like the dead mum...& the wicked little zombie-baby...not to mention the killer viscera. But in the end, it's Lionel's desire for love that is the important thing.
I've seen posts saying that Braindead is the goriest movie ever...I don't know that I can say that...but they sure used a heluva lot of blood in that lawn mower scene.
In the end, I haven't seen a single Peter Jackson film that I haven't loved...and that anyone who lays down their hard-earned cash to pick up this gem of a dvd is getting every penny's worth.
Street Trash (1987)
Good Film...maybe not...GOod Entertainment...HELL YEAH!!!
~~~I got this on an old vhs that someone had taped, along with "The Stuff" and I hafta say that Street Trash is a vastly superior film to The Stuff, hands down. Sure, it is an over the top gore-fest...but that's exactly what it wants to be...it doens't make any claims of being an "art" film, or a "classy" film...it is here to present for our viewing pleasure, or revulsion...some great moments of bums melting into toilets, exploding, & having their unit ripped off for a game of keepaway.
And to anyone who says that this film has no plot or coherent storyline...what mocie were you watching? Freddie needs a drink...Bronson is a lunatic...& the doorman needs a red-ass beatdown.
Sure, the acting is definitely not Oscar material, but the key characters came across well...and the story kept things intersting...and you actually almost started to feel for these hobos...ALMOST.
In the end, Street Trash is not a movie that I will rush out to add to my collection...but I'm definitely gonna remember it for a long time.
