Kurbaan (2009)
Kurbaan: Horrible Movie
I must say, I'm utterly disappointed with Kurbaan. I went into the movie with pretty low expectations and yet the film managed to fall well below them.
Saif Ali Khan was the main reason I decided to go watch the movie since I admire his work. But after watching this, I'm quite appalled he agreed to this movie. Anyway
Let's start from the beginning, shall we? Story-wise, the film was very weak. C'mon? Another terrorist movie? Who hasn't done this before? Fiza, Mission Kashmir, Fanaa and more recently, New York. Even New York seemed outdated for it's time and now we get this garbage.
And with a terrorist movie, what are we missing? Oh yes, the Muslim extremists. Honestly, this movie portrayed Muslims in the most negative way possible. And it wasn't even just a couple scenes, it was throughout the movie. Muslim husbands abusing their wives, not letting them work, using the Quran as a reason for the attacks, and saying it's Allah's will. Yeah fine there might be people that exist who are like that, but I see no reason to make movies about this. And if you are going to be making a movie about this, at least make it in good taste. Every opportunity some dialogue was put in there to make Muslims look cruel and stupid. It's like they really had an agenda in this movie to make us seem that way. Being a Muslim, yes it does make me angry seeing these things, but I feel the same way with every other race, not just when it's involving me. It's highly distasteful.
Acting was OK for the most parts. But I'm still not convinced from Kareena Kapoor's performance. I've never been a fan and I don't think I ever will be. The rest of the cast were boring and probably the guy who held his own was probably Saif himself. But even then, acting overall was still OK at best. The dialogue is laughable. Just seeing Vivek Oberoi's scene while he listens on to Kareena explaining the abuse story of her neighbour's for a long time. And then he gives the killer punchline, "Sounds like a domestic violence case." Really? Thanks Captain Obvious. The acting is horrendous at parts and it's just too awkward. And was the dubbing scene really necessary? Even though from its excessive awkwardness and least significant plot development, it was the best scene in the entire movie. That's how horrible this movie is.
That's pretty much all I can say. Severely disappointed with this effort. I wouldn't be surprised if My Name is Khan turns out to be another Muslim bashing-fest.
You certainly won't be getting my money Mr. Johar.
