The Bridges of Madison County (1995)
An absolutely beautiful stunning film
Firstly, let it be said - I am a huge fan of Clint Eastwood in everyway, be it his acting and/or directing. I have had this film in our collection for a while now but hadn't got around to watching it until last night. Well... by the time the end credits rolled I could not believe the emotion I was feeling. Everything about this film is stunning. Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep are magical together. It's not often for me that someone eclipses Eastwood when playing opposite him in a roll but Streep does. It is an injustice that she did not get the Oscar she was nominated for. Then there is the direction which again proves that Eastwood is one of the greatest filmmakers period. Everything about it is beautiful! I am not afraid to admit that there were several moments in the film where tears were welling in my eyes. If you have not seen this film, don't dismiss it as a soppy love story. It is so so much more than that in everyway. Quite simply it is one of the most beautiful, emotional and stunning films I have ever seen.
Serenity (2005)
I just don't get it ????
I had an opportunity to watch Serenity last night and after reading such glowing reviews on IMDb I thought I'd check it out. Did I miss something? 8 out of 10 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I gave up about three quarters of the way through this absolute turd of a film. At best this was capable of being labeled as 'B-Grade television'. The acting was poor, the story and characters were weak and the effects were ordinary to say the least. I just cannot conceive why so many people would rave about this. In fact to make me cringe even more, in one review someone likened it to the amazement one would have felt when watching Star Wars for the first time. Shame on you for comparing this pile of steaming crap with one of the greatest movies ever made!! I really put a lot of faith in IMDb's rating system as most of the time it is very accurate but not with this one. Absolute garbage - don't waste your time.
The Marine (2006)
OMG! Words almost fail me..................
This is the worst film I have had the misfortune of watching in as long as I can remember. Absolute utter garbage. I should have known as the start credits rolled and I spotted 'WWE' films. People that watch wrestling and actually believe it are probably the only people who will be slightly entertained by this crap. John Cena (or whoever the hell he is) couldn't act his way into a kindergarten pantomime. In fact, I do hope someone shows him this because people who put up a display that goddamn awful need to know about it. I mean, we are supposed to learn from our mistakes aren't we. The whole film is filled with poor wooden acting. The plot and script (if you could call them that) are ridiculous and plot hole ridden. Robert Patrick - how could you???? Grrrrrrr, I'm getting frustrated just thinking about it as I write this. In summary: The best thing about this film - the explosions. The worst thing - EVERYTHING ELSE!!!!!
WALL·E (2008)
Very good - yes. Absolute classic - I'm afraid not
I finally watched WALL.E last night and have to say I am a little bit surprised with the 8.5 rating it holds on IMDb. Don't get me wrong, it was good. In fact, for the most part it was very good, however, was it excellent - no it was not. To be inside the IMDb top 50 with the likes of such cinema classics like Saving Private Ryan, Apocalypse Now, Goodfellas, Star Wars, Pulp Fiction etc etc - I'm sorry but it's just not that worthy. I think the world has fallen in love with WALL.E the character not WALL.E the movie which is fair enough as he is a wonderfully adorable little guy but as a whole the story (involving the humans) going on behind WALL.E and EVE is pretty ridiculous. Yes, the animation is absolutely flawless, and yes, the relationship between the two robots is beautiful but I really do think that when everyone gets over there initial love for these two and look at the film as a whole - you'll actually realize I'm correct.
The Hunted (2003)
completely enjoyable - does not deserve the negative feedback
I too don't understand the negative comments here. The Hunted is a great action flick. It features great leads from Tommy Lee Jones (as you would expect) and Benicio Del Toro (my first film experience with him, I thought he added an amazing presence to his character) plus good support from the surrounding cast. The film has some amazing locations and scenery and was very well paced. The fight and actions scenes were excellent with some decent gore thrown in where necessary. My only nit pick was I felt it could have been a little longer in duration. Ignore the bad press on The Hunted. I just don't understand how you can't enjoy this film - that simple! Oh,..and doesn't Tommy Lee Jones really suit the beard.
