Leviatán (1984)
Not just for Cooper fans.
Alright, the general consensus here is that this movie is "Great for Cooper Fans!". While I agree, being a huge, life long Alice Cooper fan who loves just about anything that he does (except for that damn Fresh Blood song...), I also feel that this movie has something more to offer. While watching it, I didn't find myself thinking "wow, look, it's Alice, he's so cool" at all. Because of the voice dubbing, I was able to completely forget that it was Alice I was watching, and I got more into the character of Vincent Raven.
I remember watching this movie when I was 10 or 11. The reason I rented it was because I was a huge fan, and I wanted to see him. I remember the movie scaring the ever living out of me. I don't even think I made it through the whole movie. Now it, of course, doesn't scare me at all. It still does have great atmosphere though. There is some really cool lighting and cinematography to be seen here. The movie is pretty intense in some scenes, while not taking itself, or the genre for that matter, too seriously at any point. I bought this movie because I am a Cooper fan, and because I remember it from my childhood, but I ended up finding a rare, lost gem.
Please watch this movie and give it an honest chance. It's cheesy, but I love cheese!
Anchor Eddy's (2006)
Good stuff....
I've seen a lot of crap.
As an aspiring amateur filmmaker I've watched a lot of other independent movies, mainly horror, as well as some comedies, and I've come to a not so startling realization... most low budget independent movies suck... and the suck hard (Bone Setter anybody? Maybe Scarecrow Slayer?).
Having said that, I was definitely apprehensive going into this movie. David Dellecese, the director of the film, went to college where I am going to college, and screened this movie there this past winter. Like I said, I was very apprehensive, but went to see this because I like supporting local independent cinema. I was very pleasantly surprised. This film made me laugh more than a lot of Hollywood comedies have done in the past five years. It was a wonderful film, full of great characters and a great story. The production quality is the film's only downfall. I, like a lot of people, don't like the look of video, but I don't hold this against the director. It's obviously cheaper to shoot on video than on film. The only other gripe I had was there was some audio issues, mainly toward the beginning of the film, where it was difficult to hear or understand what characters were saying. Again, this is just a result of low budget.
I think the reason that I liked and appreciated this movie so much is because of my understanding of the difficulties of low-budget film-making from first hand experience. For the budget that was used, you can't get much better than this product.
Overall, I will be buying this film when it is released, and David Dellecese is a wonderful filmmaker. Give this guy some money and you'll have some great cinema...
Watch this film.
Van Helsing (2004)
Can you say "UGH"?
This movie was a snoozer... literally. My father and I went to see Dawn of the Dead at the drive in, the same night that Van Helsing opened, and it happened to be playing after DOTD, so we decided to give it a try. Well, it was just about at the Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde scene that we turned on the car and left. It was mainly because of all the CGI, we just didn't like it. Well, here we are several months later, and we decide to give it a second try, so we went out and rented it last night. Well, we made it past the scene that we stopped at previously, but it was right after Van Helsing fights off the three badly CGI'd vampires and kills one, that I rolled over and went to sleep. The storyline was painful, there was more computer created characters than in Shrek, and the scenes were badly written. If someone were to ask me if they should watch this, I would STRONGLY recommend not doing so.
I had real hopes for this film, as I am a huge Universal Monsters fan, but it strongly disappointed me.
However, this is only my opinion, however strong it may be. If you are into CGI crap and a strongly clichéd action film, then see this.. if not, then avoid.

Freddy vs. Jason (2003)
AWESOME!!!
This movie is one of the best horror movies that have been released in a long time (in my opinion of course). I loved it. I thought Freddy Krueger was brought back to his roots of being dark, and scary, Ken was a great Jason, and was reminiscent of the old school Voorhees' (I.E. Ted White and Richard Brooks). Fight scenes were excellent, along with the death scenes. I highly recommend this film!
