Skeletons on the Zahara (2006)
Intriguing Show of Wit and Survival
I just recently saw this documentary on The History Channel and was immediately drawn in to its incredible story. The tale of Captain James Riley and his men is perfectly captured in interview and reenactment form to create a captivating spectacle that kept my attention for the entire two hours. There are many interviews with historians and even many descendents of the people involved, showing a very unique, interesting, and informative. aspect of the story. Keane and Bowden's hard work certainly shows through in the quality, and many may notice that Bowden has a key acting role in it too. Make sure to check out Skeletons on the Zahara, it's worth your time, and is a very uplifting story of wit and survival.
Pulse: A Stomp Odyssey (2002)
Incredible film featuring amazing sounds and visuals.
I was blown away by "Pulse - A Stomp Odyssey" when I saw it at my local Omnimax theater. The film features performers from all over the world playing amazing rhythms on various instruments and objects. It was incredibly entertaining and interesting at the same time. Location after location, the filmmakers amaze the audience with breathtaking cinematography and incredible sound quality. From people beating on boxes, to those playing giant taiko drums, the movie grabbed my attention the whole time. Though there is no talking, there is plenty of humor as various close-ups of different people appear as the sing, yell, laugh, and beat box. The whole collage of image and sounds creates an amazing movie that is well worth the price of admission, multiple times over. After it was over, all I could say was WOW.
The Matrix (1999)
One of the BEST action films of all time.
The Matrix, starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Ann Moss, and Hugo Weaving, is an amazing film about a normal citizen nicknamed Neo (Reeves) who is called upon by Morpheus (Fishburne), a mysterious man who believes that Neo is the chosen one who can save the world from Agent Smith (Weaving) and his other almost immortal agents. The movie takes place in two different worlds. The real world, which is dark and evil, and the Matrix, which is a computer generated modern day world, which normal people think that they live in. The only people who know that the Matrix is fake are Morpheus, his band of helpers, the Agents, and now Neo. The incredible scope and depth of this movie is somewhat overwhelming. The 'good guys' transport between the two world by way of telephone, which confused me and most likely everyone who has seen it. However the action, the special effects, and the cinematography are beyond amazing, making this one of the coolest action films of all time. Keanu Reeve's acting is definitely not Oscar worthy, but he looks good in his sunglasses and trench coat while flying through the air and taking out tons of guys in the process. The movie does have a corny ending that then, to some extent, leaves you hanging, however because of the amazing special effects, actions scenes, and creative plot, it's definitely a great movie.
