Little Bone Lodge (2023)
It surpassed my (middling) expectations
No offense to Tubi: despite being a huge fan of Tubi itself I was really not expecting to enjoy a "Tubi Original" as other "Originals" thus far have seemed cheesy.
...but this, this was surprisingly enjoyable.
The acting, cinematography, sets, effects, and pacing were all great. I agree with some of the other reviewers that a few plot elements could be predictable but I don't think most people will be able to predict all of them.
I confess though - the primary reason that I gave this a chance was that it was listed as a horror movie with an "R" rating. I do have a soft spot for Brit horror though.
Shortcut (2020)
It's a very long music video
"Shortcut" feels more like an overly long "Stranger Things"-inspired synthwave music video than a movie. It looks nice (generally good cinematography), sounds nice (generally good synth score), and the kids do an excellent job with the script they're given.
...but that script is pretty lacking. You could remove/mute all of the dialogue and watch the movie with just its musical score and not miss anything because it's all so obviously telegraphed. ...like the content of a dramatic music video.
It's not bad, it's not great, but I'd say this is an *excellent* movie to put on in the background while doing something else because it looks and sounds nice and you won't miss any plot points by not paying attention.
Night of Something Strange (2016)
Loathsome and despicable, if that's what you're looking for
...but sometimes that's just what you're in the mood for.
Sure it's not the only movie to feature violence (both sexual and non-sexual), gore, nudity, potty humor, high school role-tropes, racial stereotypes, and casual misogyny in huge quantities, but "Night of Something Strange" does feature them in a fairly balanced ratio.
I wouldn't say it handles any of these themes (or anything, really) "gracefully" but the rest of the movie is a lot less offensive than the first 15-or-so minutes would suggest.
Actually I take that back. This thing gets so much weirder and more violent as it approaches its climax.
OMG... We're in a Horror Movie (2016)
Enjoyably dumb labor of love
I know nothing about the people who made this movie but they strike me as a bunch of nerdy friends who:
* Are so comfortable with each other that they are able to make uncomfortable/puerile jokes targeting each other on film.
* Wanted to make a movie that showcases their geekdoms (board games, horror tropes).
That's all a guess on my part though.
Anyway, this isn't a high production value thriller but if you have ever been in a long-running tabletop role playing or board gaming group, this is the movie you might have made with your friends (assuming that your group was sufficiently nerdy, diverse, and potty-humored).
Movie is fine.
