Kaaval (2021)
Unnecessarily slow paced and weak plot.
Extremely slow paced. The content is worth less than 1.5 hrs and the rest is all bloat. Most of the significant part of the plot happens in the final 45 mins and that too has critical plot holes. I'd recommend a skip for this movie or use the fwd button liberally if you feel intrigued enough to go through it.
Churuli (2021)
Mesmerizing and mind bending.
If you are here to experience a well-defined plot with a start, a journey and an end, this is not the movie for you. This is like the abstract modern art that we see in museums. Some may see extreme beauty in it and others will see meaningless absurdity. But if you let yourself immerse into it with an open mind, you will most probably enjoy it rather than get bored or irritated. I was mesmerized by it. If you ask me why, I can't explain it.
Star (2021)
Talent wasted on a pathetic storyline.
This is not a horror/thriller movie. Don't watch it If you are here for those genres. The "deliberate deception" approach taken by the writer makes the movie quite a frustrating experience in the end. The topic in the climax is an important one but for a movie buff it is entirely anticlimactic. Talent like Joju's is utterly wasted on this movie. Prithviraj only has a 2-minute cameo, don't be fooled by his face in the poster. The art department has done a good job. Good cinematography and music. But in retrospect, that too is wasted in this movie. I'd strongly recommend skipping this movie.
Sense8 (2015)
Tiresome show filled with cliches and corny dialogues
The premise of the story is quite intriguing. But spending most of the 1st season building the premise when we as viewers already get the message in the 1st episode is too tiresome.
The hyper-bollywoodised, dogmatic, comically naive Indian society, the hyper-patriarchal Korean society, gang-dominated Kenyan society all have some truth in them but they focus so much on these aspects that it appears very cliched and flat. The characters are inauthentic and unidimensional. They feel underdeveloped even after wasting so many hours witnessing their lives. Most of the actors have given disappointing performances. There is no authenticity in the acting and they themselves seem unconvinced about the concept The dialogues sound like a textbook of cheesy corniness. So fake.
Music and cinematography are good. Editing is excellent... it wouldn't have been easy to plan the transitions and switches of the characters so smoothly. The LGBTQ overtones are also well written... sometimes overdone, but that's acceptable as it needs to be better understood by the society at large
I found it a tiresome show to watch and wonder how it got an 8+ rating here. Must be because of the brand recognition of the Wachowskis. I watched most of the later episodes 1.5x speed frequently skipping 10 seconds again and again as it was too unbearable.
Kho Kho (2021)
Corny clichéd storytelling and bad direction
The amount of inspirational dialogues in the movie are exhausting. Corny clichéd storytelling. Rajisha is the only saving grace in the movie and the girls who are all 1st time actors I believe are also good. But nothing they did could save this badly scripted and directed movie. The quantity of music is also too much. Overall, it was a disappointing movie even though it had an inspirational theme.
The Last Two Days (2021)
Weak scripting and screenplay but good direction and performances.
Good performances and intelligent direction. Covid restrictions have been intelligently dealt with. With just 1 main location (and a couple of minor ones) and a handful of actors, most of them never performing together, the director has managed to make a watchable film. It has significant plot holes and clichés but it's watchable once. I've never seen Deepak Parambol in a main role and he is good. It would have been a good one if they writers had worked on tightening the script and screenplay a bit more.
Bulbbul (2020)
A visual treat to be watched in theatres.
Wow! I didn't expect it would be so good. Spectacular cinematography, art, costumes, sound, scripting and performances. This is a movie to be enjoyed in theatres. Each frame is a work of art. I haven't seen Tripti Dimiri before this and she was a real surprise, solid performance. I hope she gets good films in the future. All other actors in the movie are known stellar performers and they keep up their reputation.
Must add that the movie has some gruesome imagery and some gruesome patriarchy. And it's not exactly a horror movie per se though there are many creepy moments. Not one for kids or for tender temperamented ones.
There is only one thing to complain about. The pace of the movie could have been a bit faster as it drags a bit at around the 60-70% point in the movie.
Teddy (2021)
Pathetic writing.
Utterly logicless presentation of such a serious subject. There is no sense in the plot. I'm not talking about the "soul getting into the teddy" part. That is acceptable as fantasy. The rest of the plot is what is logicless. People oblivious to a gigantic teddy walking around. Supposedly seasoned criminals helping the hero out after a round of beating. Criminal masterminds leaving trails bright as daylight. Disassembled guns kept in a hospital with an assembling instruction booklet next to it. There's no end to the nonsense spewed in this movie. The makers clearly consider viewers to be naïve toddlers. BTW, it will be a good one for kids aged 3-7. See Malayalam Joseph for a thrilling, serious presentation of the same topic. It's sad to see so many fanboy positive reviews of such a dumb trashy movie. Skip it all costs.
Coming 2 America (2021)
A rare Eddie flick that'll put you to sleep
I can't fathom why they chose to make this sad pathetic excuse of a sequel. Every actor seems to have been flogged into submission to act in this one. There is no heart and of course no humor. You will not be to blame if you fall asleep half way through the movie. A truly sad degeneration of the legend that was Eddie Murphy. I hope he makes better choices in the future.
Queen (2019)
The creators had the courage to be realistic but lacked the imagination to make it impactful.
Don't go by the overall ratings here, 170 of the 200 ratings here are manufactured by some ratings factory... all with a 10/10 rating... all with clearly robot generated usernames and the same title "queen". You can filter all the 10/10 ratings and scroll to see what I'm saying. So effectively there are only about 30 real ratings and they are not that great.
I watched the Tamil-English version of the series which seems to be the original version. All the other versions are at least partially dubbed. If you choose to do so, watch only the Tamil-English version as the dubbing in the other versions is pathetic. I started watching the Tamil version and had to quickly run and search for the original version.
Quite a realistic bit of storytelling. The larger than life characters have been humanised. We have seen these characters only in black and white but this series presents them in reasonably realistic shades of grey. Of course there is some level of dramatisation and idolatry of the protagonist. If nothing else, this series shows why Jayalalitha became what she became. Bad parenting followed by a series of betrayals throughout her life made her insecure and she grew a gigantic ego as a defense mechanism.
The series is quite difficult to watch because of two things. The first and foremost is the excruciatingly slow pace. This should've been a 6 part series and has been stretched to 11 parts. I'm grateful that this is a web series where I have the option to hit the forward button to skip. Without that option, I'd have stopped watching it after the 1st episode. The only thing that made me push on was an eagerness to see a realistic angle to the life of Jayalalitha.
The second aspect that makes it difficult to watch is the drab dialogue delivery. The dialogue scripting and delivery both are quite dull and puts you to sleep. You can keep the dialogues realistic without making them sound like a docudrama extempore. Many of the dialogues are deep and philosophical fitting the tumultuous life of Jayalalitha but a large volume of them seem unnecessary and at times repetitive.
Overall, it's a sad missed opportunity. The creators had the courage to be realistic with the potentially controversial story but lacked the imagination to make it impactful.
Love (2020)
Superb scripting and good performances
Wonderfully scripted. It keeps you on the edge and uncomfortable throughout. All the elements that you feel as inconsistent plot holes are washed away by the twist in the pre-climax. The final twist adds to the entertainment value but doesn't contribute much to the plot. You will be forced to play back the whole movie in your mind to cross check plot inconsistencies and you won't find any (at least not any significant ones).
The normalization of domestic violence, alcoholism (and induced altered states of mind), adultery etc. are all quite disturbing and makes this movie unfit for seekers of mild entertainment. It is a heavy movie and doesn't leave you with a "pleasant" feeling. It's only for those who like to obsess over storylines and plots.
The performances are good by most standards but I feel the movie would have been a better one if we had a more capable cast.Overall, it's a great movie for those who enjoy tight well written scripts.
Vellam (2021)
Well scripted and performed movie spoilt by an out of tune climax
A large portion of the movie is well written and really good quality. The situational comedy and the heartrending compulsions of addiction are very realistically and beautifully presented. And the performances are quite good too. Jayasurya is especially good. Admittedly one of his best performances.
But the final 20 minutes of the movie takes the charm away from the movie. It almost feels as if the director ran out of time and ended the movie in a hurry. The preachy and unrealistically exhilarating climax is completely out of tune with the rest of the movie and destroys the effect entirely. The message of recovery and success could've been presented as realistically as the rest of the movie in the same 20 mins. In the final 20 minutes, he grows from a pauper to the owner of a business spread across 22 nations! And all this happens in 3-4 years apparently.
If the movie had ended showing him starting to build his tile factory or had shown him as an established businessman with a potbelly and balding head, the pace and scale of the story would have remained realistic while conveying the exact same level of positivity as it currently attempts. A balding, potbellied Jayasurya could still have made the bombastic walk in the airport with the foreigner :)).
Malayalam movies are known for realistic presentations and this movie would've been one too, if the final 20 minutes were better made.
There is no question that the story of the real life Murali of his growth from an alcoholic to a successful businessman is a true inspiration. The review is about the presentation of the story, not the life of the person. The real life Murali struggled for 12 years and grew his business to 2 countries. There are several post movie release interviews of Murali Kunnumpurath in which you can see this humble, authentic and heartwarming individual. I'd recommend hearing him as it adds a special effect to the movie.
Laal Kaptaan (2019)
Lovely period movie that surprisingly went unnoticed.
It's a beautifully made movie. A simple personal retribution themed story takes you through the brute realities of the time and shows raw situations and emotions as is without any additional masala of nationalistic fervor. It shows the patriotism of some of the characters but doesn't hesitate in showing the selfishness of most of the others.
The cinematography, BGM, costumes, sets are all of high quality and reflects the high production values of the team.
Performances of all actors are excellent too. Though Saif has acted well in the movie, I feel someone with a more agile and fit musculature rather than Saif's bulky muscles would have been a better fit for the character.
AK vs AK (2020)
It's definitely worth a watch
It's definitely worth a watch. It has flaws and we can find many plot holes if we look for them. I ended up feel a bit dissatisfied because I was expecting to watch a realistic experimental film but the plot holes resulted in a broken suspension of disbelief.
The acting is sub par... apparent that Anurag's profession is not acting and Anil is not made for this kind of a film. Have to add that I liked Anil's negative shade in the final minutes of the movie. He's made for that kind of swagger. But then, casting couldn't have been any different because the real life image and aura of the actors plays an unscripted role in the script.
You should ignore the extreme negative comments as they are not based on the quality of the film but are largely out of hatred for Anurag. These commenters would've rated Manikarnika and the Vivek Oberoi Modi movie with 10 stars I'm sure... :-).
Aashram (2020)
Surprisingly entertaining
MX player originals are turning out to be surprisingly entertaining.
I haven't watched a better performance of Bobby's. As a godman he exudes stoic serenity and as a conman he's as sleazy as one can be. He's really gotten into the character. Several new actors performing really well and several veterans giving some of their best performances.
There is sufficient drama and steamy sleaze. Some of the elements of the plot are too simplistic to be true, but then this is not a top grade production in a top grade platform.
I see why many have given negative comments: in today's hyper-nationalistic India, it's difficult for many to see art as art and not get defensive where it's not needed.
Android Kunjappan Version 5.25 (2019)
Beautifully told story of emotional needs in old age.
You have to ignore the build quality of the robot. If you focus on that, you will dilute the real story in your mind.
It's a beautifully told story of emotional needs in old age. Performances of the main protagonists are lovely. Saiju's comic timing is hilarious. Suraj and Soubin shine as expected. Kendy Zirdo is a bit amateurish.
Though the message is sentimental, the presentation is lighthearted and doesn't make you feel that you are being lectured.
Thottappan (2019)
A touching tale with fantastic performances.
Fantastic performances by each and every actor in the movie. It's hard to believe that this is Priyamvada's debut movie. She's an actor to look out for. Interesting and engaging storyline with a healthy dose of all emotions. Never overly mushy. Never without logic. The movie shines bright in all departments. A must watch. I'm surprised it didn't bag many national awards.
Panipat (2019)
A bit inordinately long but sensible
I'm surprised at the huge number of 1 star ratings. This movie definitely does not deserve that. It is a much more logically presented movie than the 6.5 rated useless Manikarnika.
The movie doesn't have the entertaining kick that Bajirao Mastani had. It does feel more like a dramatised documentary.and is a bit slow. The acting is not as good as Bajirao Mastani either.
But it is better than most of the recent historic movies and deserves better ratings.
Happy New Year (2014)
The making of HNY
Late 2013... SRK watches Dhoom 3 and is terrified by the fact that Aamir is treading into his territory of multicrore absurdity and that too in better style.
SRK's thought bubble "I cannot allow this. Something has to be done...soon".
Calls Farah "We have to make a film that has all the elements of this and more. And it has to happen ASAP. The next year has to end happier"
Farah: "OK"
Farah was in the loo. Immediately pulls out a piece of tissue paper and scribbles out the key elements of D3:
Father commits suicide because of the villain.
Son(s) swear revenge.
Son robs the villain and ruins him. Absurd heist.
Kamli
Aamir
Jackie
Abhishek& Uday
Circus
Farah's thought bubble: "OK now, here's what I can do":
Father commits suicide because of the villain.(I'll copy this)
Son swears revenge(I'll copy this)
Son robs the villain and ruins him.Absurd heist.(I'll copy this. And I can make the heist more absurd... he ha ha ha)
Kamli (Kat's too busy. No worries. We'll put Deepika and put a song that has "Kamli" in it... And I'll throw in the "malang" swinging on sarees bit into the same song. 2 D3 songs in one...beat that.)
Aamir (Now that's impossible. SRK has to have a job)
Jackie (He can't be the father again. So lets make him the villain)
Abhishek& Uday (I'll make a new hybrid character. More irrelevant and stupid than both of these combined. Abhi fits the role best...yess I'm a genius!)
Circus (Can't copy it as is... Lets make it a reality show instead... a dance competition... they are all like circus anyway)
Lets add some Kapil's comedy night stuff, some epilepsy jokes, some vomit jokes, some cheap female body part jokes, some petty nationalism, Modi(he's the flavor of the season) and some more in it to cater to SRK's "and more" requirement.
And voila... the story is ready! Oh, let the name be Happy new year. SRK will like the symbolism.
Add the marketing muscle and barge into all the high TRP TV shows before the 1st weekend so that many see it before the word gets out.
And release it in as many theaters as possible to milk the max out of the hapless public before they realise what they gotten themselves into. He ha ha.
Flush.
"Hello Shahrukh. Here's the plan...."
