The Road (I) (2009)

extremely depressing
28 September 2010
If you fancy an evening of despair and desperation this could be the movie for you. The lighting camera man must have been drunk throughout the shooting of this movie, for at least 15% of the film you could see little of nothing on the screen, supposedly this is meant to be "moody" The Director might be better at directing traffic. I am always surprised at the huge cast list of technicians who all worked to make such a poor movie and it does prove that the IMDb star rating can not be relied upon to guarantee and enjoyable movie. Although there is no accounting for taste there should be some common ground between over 30,000 voters which would give a reasonable indication of a film's view ability. The only interesting features for me were the words, after some 111 minutes "The End" What a relief that was ! It was the worst movie I have seen in many years.

Anthony Minghella works his magic
28 March 2008
What a great surprise to see how Anthony Minghella has made this movie in Botswana with Jill Scott in staring role as the Lady detective. The casting is perfect. The colours of Botswana are truly beautiful and the country might really be the star of the film. Superb photography by Seamus McGarvey who also did Atonement.

This is a simple story really bought to life with a host of talent. A child, a little girl, taught be her father to be observant, retain a good memory, look after others, goes to live in the town after her fathers death to set up the first detective agency in Botswana to be run by a lady. She then goes about finding clients and solving their problems. During the story the viewer is treated to some great shots of wildlife and the wonderful Botswana colours & country side. An endearing film not to missed. The sad part of the story is that Anthony Minghella is no longer with us & we will not see his like again. Barriebrdc.

Stylish moving account of 1940's England
25 February 2004
The cast and crew were some of the best British movies had to offer. This moving tale of what it was like in England in and just after the war years. I really enjoyed Thora Herd as the ever reliable Char lady, chatting all the time with nothing to say she was perfect. Cecil Parker who was head over heels in love with delightful Ursula Jeans but did not have the nerve to tell her till 2/3rds through the film, very English. The trivia was exactly right. A real who's who in the British film industry. Roy Baker directing, Vetchinsky art direction and Hillier a master of black and white photography. Miur Mathieson, music Seeing this 1948 movie for the 1st time in 2004, I was prepared to be disappointed but was not.

This is a one gag movie.
15 February 2004
Disappointing movie due to weak story, OK there were a few

laughs but there was only one gag, someone talks to Bill Murray in

Japese for several long seconds and the translation comes back

as a one liner! Funny the 1st time but that is it. Interesting insight in

to life in Japan for a foreign executive, but so what . So I say again

disappointing movie.

Big Fish (2003)

Great acting, photography and crazy script.
15 February 2004
This is an original movie, Albert Finney is brilliant (as usual) he

must be one of the few British actors who does a great American

accent. The script is crazy though making it difficult to follow the

story line on 1st viewing. Excellent cast carries this film through to

be a fine and entertaining movie.

Beautiful Movie,beautiful actors.
26 January 2004
This was a beautiful movie, I saw the uncut version which will be cut for US audiences as there are lots of full nude scenes but it works well and Eva Green will be a big star in the future. I did not understand the title, the movie should have been called An American in Paris?????

Excellent, entertaining movie.

Good story line gave this fine cast the oppertunity to excel. There were few slow moments in the 155 minutes running time, I would question the flashbacks early in the movie but they sort of work. an excellent movie.

Poor script, never funny, worst Nicholson film ever
28 July 2003
This was a poor movie with Jack Nicholson, he is one on my favorite actors, Jack accepting to do a movie like this is a real dissapointment. Why did he do it? A sharper script would have helped a lot , the story line was very weak.
