The Matrix Revolutions (2003)
well... its better than reloaded... yeh (spoilers)
i did not care for this movie. the script was written by monkies, it had to have been. the oracle gets a new body cause the actress died. they did not even have to explain that, but they wrote it in anyway. smith, who was one of the shining lights of the 1st 2 movies was seriously over-written for this film. his character is even more unbelievable than the fact neo can now make the machines explode by sheer will power. i don't have room to write all my gripes down here. if you liked the 2nd movie, then you are sure to like this one. if you hated the 2nd one or thought it was weak... you won't enjoy this one either.
final note: the effect used in the end fight with neo and smith, where time slows down and neo punches through the rain drops... was STOLEN from a chinese movie called Hero. so much for breaking new ground in cinema and effects.
Here is the info for Hero, its a better movie, go watch it. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0299977/
Equilibrium (2002)
What movies should be
Well I downloaded this movie, it was not playing anywhere near me. I had read reviews, seen blurbs... and basically expected the world of it. My expectations were met and surpassed. Bale is an actor who can pull of being a bad ass (umm matrix - reeves... hell no). This movie was not about kicking ass and special effects, it has a plot and acting. I know this seems like a new concept, but honestly its not... its just that no one makes good movies anymore in my opinion. I have resorted to foreign cinema to fill the gaps that american cinema leaves. Those are large gaps, and I am running out of good asian films as well.
Equilibrium follows one man's journey from a drugged robot, to a feeling caring, revenge delivering human. This is not a fast paced movie... it's one that feels longer than it actually is; but you do enjoy the film. I have shown this film to 7 people since I downloaded it, all intelligent movie watchers (or so I think). Everyone enjoyed it, and they were not all 18-25 and males. The acting is good, the plot is good, the cinematography is good, and yes so are the effects.
Equilibrium is a plot movie in disguise. It has action, but the main character is so skilled at what he does that none of the fight scenes last very long. All fights are believable on a very basic, "hey if someone trained me to be a badass I might be able to do that". Nothing like Matrix or other movies where the fights exist only in film, and never something anyone could ever pull off no matter their skill. This gives Equilibrium a sort of accreditation that is felt more as a "YEH BABY! in fights than a "ohhh no way!"
I like this movie, I will be buying the DVD as soon as it becomes available... and I suggest you do the same. Few recent films can compare to this, and damn it... not enough good sci-fi films come out, so support the good ones. If you buy the DVD I promise you that you will rewind the action scenes and watch them repeatedly. More importantly though the thing that will stick with you is the plot, the message, and the scope of the production.
Dreamcatcher (2003)
Catch a cold instead
Well this would be one of the films where I can say, "I want those hours of my life back, and my cash". Previews make this movie look good, but in reality the only reason this film is worth seeing for the Animatrix short by Square Animation at the beginning. The characters are weak, the writing is weak, the acting is weak, and the plot is typical of TV movie. It's not scary, and the aliens look dumb. This film was a bust, I expect 'The Core' to be crap... but I am in for special effects if nothing else. Even the special effects in this movie were poorly done.
Dreamcatcher is better than most of King's films... course that's not saying much.
Willard (2003)
Ahhhh Rats!
A decent movie, though not shot in the cinematic style of most movies from this decade. I enjoyed this film. It had superb acting on the part of the main character and the antagonist... the problem is the plot for this movie was very simplistic. So you know what the end goal of the film is within the 1st 15 minutes, then you are just waiting for it to play out.
But regardless of the plot factor... the movie is good, the rat effects are good. Its a very well done non-traditional movie.
Donnie Darko (2001)
Bunnies, prozac, death, weirdness... oh yeh.
This is one of the few movies I watched that I had not seen anything about before watching it. Not a preview, teaser or anything. The mystery film was a total success. I purchased the DVD for 10$, and it was a very worthwhile purchase. The quality is outstanding, the acting is good, the casting is awesome. Darko's plot is also deeper than the normal movie. A layered plot is not something you normally see in American film, its not only that... but its also very original in concept an excecution.
Find this movie, watch... hell, buy it.
Blood Work (2002)
Clint directs again, and its all good
While fairly predictable, this movie was well acted, well directed, and well told. Even though drinking heavily while watching, I was entertained and intrigued.
This is a good film for the "who done it" fans, or just Clint Eastwood fans in general. But it is not required that you like Clint to like this movie.
Watch it, you'll enjoy it. Not the best film in its class, but not bad at all. A very worth while experience and worth the 3-7$ rental fee.
Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie (2002)
A trip to church on Saturday evening...
I personally was not interested in seeing this film. My fiancee was, so we rented it. I would not say it was total crap... since it had some minor humor. But in general, this is a film for parents to watch with their kids. Parents who are into the whole Sunday school, and Bible study routine.
This is not a good movie. The animation is cheese at best, the humor is weak at best, and the story is a 10 to 15 minute clip from the Bible turned into a 90 minute movie.
My head hurt after watching 10 minutes of this film. I would rather choke on vegetables than watch them become animated and sing about God.
If you're a Christian, and active with the church... this is right up your alley. If you're one of the normal viewing public looking for a laugh and NOT a sermon... well then this is not the video for you. This is not Ice Age, Bug's Life, or anything close. Do not let the commercials fool you into thinking that this is a Pixar type film, cause it is not.
Versus (2000)
Hell yeh! Zombies, Ninjas, Ninja-zombies, etc.
Alright the 1st time i watched this movie was over a year ago on a VCD release I downloaded from... I don't remember where.
Have you ever started a movie you felt you HAD to finish? For me thats hardly ever. Any time I start this movie I want to watch the whole thing. The effects are good, the acting is ok, the directing is good, the plot and story line is actually original. Thats right folks an original idea in movies!!!
I don't want to give anything away, but I'll say this... I paid 50$ for an import Japanese DVD of this movie instead of ordering a HK rip off. Ask yourself this, "how many movies have you seen (EVER) that you consider to be worth 50$". My guess is maybe 2 if you are a lucky and educated viewer.
If you find a copy of this movie rent it, buy it, steal it... whatever. This is not a movie for people who don't like the following films: Night of the Living Dead, Highlander, Matrix.
Now imagine a nice mix of the 3 films and you get Versus. No one I have showed my DVD of this movie to has not liked it. You can't go wrong with 100%.
