The Christmas Tree (1991)
Absolutely horrible
Much like many other reviewers, I have watched Nostalgia Critic's hilarious, disparaging critique of this special, and it is indeed atrocious. Unfortunately, I have had the dishonor of owning this on VHS since I was a small child. I may have liked it then (and even then, it was kind of creepy), but I don't know what on Earth I was thinking. Anyway, my brother and I pulled out the video a few weeks ago to watch it again for its flaws, and boy, are they ever present. The plot was fairly well developed, but ruined by its horrible directing, hideous animation, and lifeless voice acting (except for Ms. Mavilda, whose anger was voiced well throughout the special).
Even the plot itself takes a nosedive at the end, when Ms. Mavilda becomes a better person after getting struck by lightning while trying to cut down the tree. The moral at the end, for that matter, was also badly chosen: "You always win when you're good". I mean, what does THAT have to do with Christmas? If anything, she should have gone to jail while we learn from her assistant's promotion how much it means to make a change to a formerly bad situation. You can find it on YouTube if you must, but I am definitely throwing out that VHS tape. No one should watch, let alone buy, this piece of Christmas coal.
Let's Stick Together (1952)
GREAT Way To Remember a Past Friendship!
When I moved on to 7th grade in school, I was feeling really sad because I had a good friend who moved away, and thus I never saw (or probably ever will see) him again. But I felt a lot better on Christmas that same year when my parents gave me a VHS Tape that had about 5 or 6 Donald cartoons on it, including this one. This was my favorite short on the tape because it makes me think of the good times my friend and I had together. I also like how this flashback short, unlike other shorts that use clips from other pre-made cartoons as flashbacks, is COMPLETELY individual! Furthermore, I like how the full cartoon itself ends -I don't want to spoil it, so you'll have to see for yourself. Highly recommended!
Christmas Comes But Once a Year (1936)
How VERY Creative!
Max Fleischer's "Christmas Comes But Once a Year" is the best Christmas-themed cartoon I have ever seen! When Professor Pappy is riding his car by an orphanage where the kids live, he notices that the kids living in that orphanage are sad because the toys they got for Christmas broke very quickly. So, Pappy saves the day by going inside the orphanage and making toys out of kitchen supplies- utensils, food holders- and other boring objects, and makes fascinating toys out of them, which pleases the kids and makes their Christmas GREAT! Overall, this short gets a 10/10! If you haven't seen it, it's on Youtube for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!
