Welcome Back, Kotter (1975–1979)
My High School Years.
8 June 2021
I was in high school during the run of this series and it was one of the shows that everyone talked about ("Did you see what Barbarino did last night?"). I enjoyed the show very much because the characters were truly originals. On a side note, the very first episode aired on my first day of high school and the very last episode aired on my graduation day.

Shameless: Father Frank, Full of Grace (2021)
Season 11, Episode 12
Disappointing As Expected.
12 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There really wasn't a heck of a lot they could do with the finale for this show because the writers have just been spinning their wheels for the last 5-6 seasons. Bringing Fiona back would not have made any difference because most of the other character's storylines went everywhere and nowhere up to the finale and just stopped there.

Boiler Room (2000)
Interesting But The Main Character Confuses Me
4 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A well acted movie that for the most part seems to accurately portray the wheelings and dealings of a "boiler room" type of operation. However, I am confused by the main character Seth. He appears to come from a good family (though his father is pretty tough) and a good background, yet he appears to completely lack a moral compass and is obtuse regarding the things that he is doing wrong. First, he does not seem to comprehend the fact that his home casino is illegal and then at the brokerage it appears that he doesn't understand the fact that he is stealing people's money and in the case of Harry; ruining their lives (at least until his father shoves that fact in his face.)

The Spanish Princess: Flodden (2020)
Season 2, Episode 2
Good Episode Despite Embellishment
3 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I like this episode because it took us outside of palaces and the endless court intrigues for a refreshing change. However, being a stickler for historical accuracy (and I can usually let small amounts of artistic license go, this was a big one. Yes, Catherine donned battle armor (while pregnant) rallied the troops and helped set the stage for the battle, she was not at Flodden.

Good Movie But These Events were Not A Triumph For JFK
21 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is a well-acted movie the does capture the tensions during the Cuban missile crisis. To some degree it also shows JFK's fecklessness, but this was not a triumph for JFK; especially since the crisis was his fault. Yes, I said it was his fault. It was his provocations which caused the USSR to try to place missiles in Cuba the first place. First, there was the invasion of Cuba, which drew Castro closer to the USSR and his desire to have a deterrent to possible future invasions of Cuba. Second, JFK had missiles placed in Turkey, which served no other purpose than to put the US in a better position for a first strike against the USSR. JFK did not seem to understand that the actions of Cuba and the USSR were deterrents to his provocations. Also, even if missiles were placed in Cuba it would not have made much of a difference since the USSR had ICBM's and subs with nuclear weapons off the coast of the US with which they could strike the US whenever they desired.

Betty (2020–2021)
Terrible, Terrible, Terrible
6 August 2020
Incoherent drivel. No cohesive storyline, terrible acting (an ensemble that never really gels) and just plain boring. For those who wonder why it only has a 6.5 rating - well, it would actually be lower were it not for the single-review users who give it a 10.

Skate Kitchen (2018)
They Don't Care So Why Should We?
2 May 2020
I am older, so I realize that I am definitely not part of the target audience for this film, but I was intrigued when I saw a documentary about skateboard culture in California a few years ago and thought it might be interesting to compare to New York City (and I live right outside NYC.) Some of the skate scenes were entertaining, but the acting was awful (this would have been better as a documentary) and I get the whole skateboarder attitude of anarchy and not caring about the world around you, etc. (actually conforming to the notion of non-conformity; which is not new), but when you act that way about the one thing you supposedly love then you've lost me (and I suspect many others.)

Interesting, but Baffling - Major Possible Spoiler
21 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Major Spoiler Ahead-

I thought the movie was intriguing and well acted but as noted by other viewers there were scenes/actions which really did not make any sense.

SPOILER: At first they want you to think that the mysterious, threatening guy who showed up in town was the murderer, and there is still some suspicion even after his alibi was revealed, but he was a distraction. I believe that the murderer was his friend whom he had drinks with in the bar.

Stupid
18 November 2019
I was actually rooting for the mysterious hackers in this movie because the main characters were so ridiculously vacuous, self-obsessed and just plain annoying.

Slow, Didactic, Inaccurate Film About a Minor Episode
25 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Described as being based on "a crazy, outrageous incredible true story" about how a black cop infiltrated the KKK, BlacKkKlansman would be more accurately described as the story of how a black cop in 1970s Colorado Springs spoke to the Klan on the phone. He pretended to be a white supremacist . . . on the phone. That isn't infiltration, that's prank-calling. A poster for the movie shows a black guy wearing a Klan hood. Great starting point for a comedy, but it didn't happen. The cop who actually attended KKK meetings undercover was a white guy (played by Adam Driver). These led . . . well, nowhere in particular. No plot was foiled. Those meetups mainly revealed that Klansmen behave exactly how you'd expect Klansmen to behave.

Add in some additional characters who didn't exist and events that did not happen and you finally reach the end of this mess.

Of course the movie also bashes you over the head with Lee's typical messages about racism by adding dialog and characters (who the hell was Alec Baldwin portraying?) that really don't have anything to do with the main plot. Oh, and he also has to denigrate President Trump.

That this movie was even considered for any Oscars is an insult to real filmmakers.

Land of Mine (2015)
A Fine Movie But.....
4 October 2019
This was a very well done and well acted movie. However, it is not entirely true.

A German pioneer group that was named Minenkommando Dänemark and who was especially established to take care of the mine-clearing task by the allies did the mine-clearing task in Denmark. The Germans worked under German supervision and Danish control.

There is no way that untrained boys using rudimentary and extremely dangerous methods could remove all of those mines. It also would not make any sense since there were vehicles (tanks with rotating chain flails mounted on the front) which were used to clear paths through minefields.

The Hurricane (1999)
If This Was Intended To Be a Fictional Story
23 May 2019
Then I could say it was a good movie, but it's presented as factual. A number of other reviewers go through the various lies that Carter has told and other falsehoods in his life story. One that I find particularly amusing however is his military record. In his book you can actually see in his photo that he (or someone) actually drew ribbons and insignia on the photo with a pencil! He was court-martialed four times and thrown out of the army. There is also one additional fact which completely shuts down the cries that he was innocent. Before the second trial in 1976 the prosecutor made an almost unheard of offer to Carter - "If you pass a lie detector test I will drop the charges". Carter refused to take the test.

Ghost Adventures (2008– )
That's Entertainment
14 February 2019
I have watched a number of episodes and if you view it as entertainment-only then I suppose you can enjoy what you are watching. I won't go into the details of why I think it is all fake because there are a number of places on the internet where that is discussed. I have just one question: If they are actually communicating with spirits of the dead (in some episodes it appears that they are in direct communication with the spirits), then why don't they ask THE QUESTIONS that only the dead could answer?

What is this?
19 May 2018
There were times when watching this show when I could not determine if it was intended to be a drama or a comedy. It seemed promising at the beginning but just kept going downhill until the ridiculous ending. FYI to some of the other reviewers: There are around 1000 gated communities in England.

Frost/Nixon (2008)
More Liberal Revisionist History
22 June 2010
Good movie, but as stated they took some real license to paint the revisionist liberal narrative of Nixon: 1. The financial deal made for the interviews was agreed to and lucrative for both parties.

2. The scene where Nixon storms out of the interview did not happen - Frost stormed out.

3. The late-night phone call from Nixon to Frost did not happen.

4. The big "gotcha" moment portrayed near the end of the film did not happen.

As I realize that license is often taken in movies regarding historical events, what people will remember of Nixon will not be gleaned from the actual interviews, but from this movie.
