Video Geisteskrank (2008)
The beginning of something huge.
Ronny Carlsson is a Swedish young, talented and very creative director who for many years has occupied itself with zero budget films. For him it's all about thought, structure and finesse restated to the main aid parts. I got acquainted with Ronny via a previous forum when he was doing his earlier project "Crow Films". This was during a period when he made childish horror movie-parodies, but I do Believe that Ronny realized his talent and during the maturation process he began instead proceed in a much more serious employment - which today goes under the title "Film Bizarro Productions" .
Video Geisteskrank is the first part of an anthology. It is like most torture films - psychologically stressful and difficult to absorb. I do not stress it as something negative, but a certain type of people do not realize the charm of experimental art-house. Film is generally a kind of total art, "Video Geisteskrank " is something extra beyond the technical. With a twinkle in Ronnys eye he has scratched up something that no one in Swedish film history previously obtained, he is thus very independent in this form of the genre in Sweden. The only competitors would in such cases be Nicolas Debot , Lotta Möller and Magnus Gillberg , but I do not think Ronny needs to feel particularly threatened in this case.
Much of the film's inspiration is clearly taken from previous Toe-Tag Pictures and Maggot Films, which are two American film studios that occupy themselves with extreme films and art-house. Picture and sound is the ultimate basic concept in Video Geisteskrank which making the movie interesting , and if not, it generates at least one form of irritation.
It is clear that the make-up effects did not cost a substantial amount of money. As a zero-budget director takes what he have and doing the best for the situation , and that is something that Ronny has definitely done well. The soundtrack is also an important part of the project - highlighting the film's true nature. Here the music is composed by Ronny's own music project "Groronodor".
Video Geisteskrank is obviously the comic part from a series of three and I got some good laughs. Ronny knows how to play with his audience in a very blunt and psychological ways. The classic silent-film theme are sometimes the most fun and it got me for a moment to forget those tough parts. The film is not longer than 20 minutes long and you have the opportunity to behold the works so I think you should give it a chance. It is a very rare Swedish film who takes you to a higher level of cinematography and Ronny Carlsson shall have a great credit for that.
Arkusan Martinsson (2009)
Swedish Social Criticism
I really don't know where to start, but I would like to give the writer and director Jimmy Johansson gratitude who has given me the opportunity to behold one of Sweden's most important amateur movies, that besides anxiety narratives also express a huge great charm. I recognize a lot in many of the characters which alludes a stereotypical view of youth unemployment in Sweden.
Much of the film feels like a real and embellished version of the cartoon character "Rocky" by Martin Kellerman. Characters' performance can also be compared in class with Lukas Moodysson's film "Show Me Love" from 1998 - but with a bit more unusual, developed and comic twist that I absolutely love. But what I most like about the movie is that Jimmy Johansson has managed to capture its socially critical view of the unemployed youth. The problem is that it actually looks like this in real life. Arkusan says in a small parenthesis that he actually wants to work, but there is no way for him to find a job. The grim emptiness and the feeling of never having money, never have the opportunity to do fun things with friends - believe me, it really is a horrible feeling. And worst of all is when it goes so far that you have to beg for things from others. It is mainly what this movie is all about - to live as a poor and worthless youth.
The film's length of 52 minutes is excellent and does not need to play out longer. Much of the film's concept entertains every minute and there are not many parts that fall off its storyboard. It is recorded in Jonkoping, Huskvarna and Gothenburg, so it's great that I who living in Sweden recognize some places that the film is set on. It also contains small, short sequences including New York and New Jersey. It even includes a sound stage by Lloyd Kaufman from Troma Entertainment, this sequence is revealed in the film's intro when Arkusan masturbate to the porn movie "Cream Cat 3".
The soundtrack is made up of local talent, partly as horror punk-rockers SISTER, but also SPDA, Apsvett feat Ralph ez Boston and gender-rocker "Alter Egon." I must not forget to mention that splatter-rap king "Goretex" is also involved. Another fun trivia is that the film would have included a scene with the Swedish porn actress Samson Biceps from, among others, Mike Beck porn series "Riding School". This, however, never happened due to financial problems.
Just to have cost ten pieces DV tape, a dog leash and a bunch of amateur actors, this is an absolutely brilliant film. It gives a directed purse park to today's society and plays out as an anarchist way into the bone marrow. Despite the efforts of the actor is in addition to the unique performance, you know, after all, what the movie are about, and it quickly becomes concerned by Arkusan. I recommend this film highly, and if you don't understand the film's message the first time, make sure to take a second look or even a third time. It can be seen in infinity!
Brutt (2011)
The social criticism continues
When I discussed with director Jimmy, he said that I wouldn't expect a movie with the content of so much social criticism like " Arkusan Martinsson ". But from my personal opinion, I think Brutt contains MORE criticism of society than its predecessor. It 's still about unemployment and poverty and what a person is willing to do in such a dramatic situation that Acke sat in. It should not have to go as far as it does in this movie.
Acke and Alle have put themselves in trouble , and no matter what they do; everything goes to hell for them. Acke should have the debt paid sooner or later, but he does not know how he will get to. In a desperate escape , he tries to sell his body to the porn industry, but then he gets so nervous that his dick slackens and it does not lead to any money. How will he do? He is not qualified to do any job, he lacks experience and is generally depressed.
Brutt carries a lot of humor, but behind the comic a hellish darkness hides. This is a very heavy film if you see it from the right perspective. It's not just a comedy you sit and laugh at - it's a comedy with a very serious undertone and who reveals some reality depictions. The film contains some scenes that really hurts to watch. Among others, Sven- Erik " SEO" Olsson got a really tough character. Usually I'm used to seeing him play " Wicked Sune " - miserable and generally stupid. But in brutt he plays the character called "GG Ahlin" that you will really feel sorry for.
Now you're probably with sadness in your soulless body while you read these lines. But to cheer you up I can reveal that Lloyd Kaufman plays a minor role in this film as Ackes grandfather - he also speaks Swedish! Haha. We will also hear the Swedish porn director Mike Beck speaks at the other side of the handset for a long while.
One of the happiest moments is when you finally get to the extras behind the film - It offers many bloopers and interviews with the best -known faces in the film.
If you like strong, tragic and realistic comedies I do definitely recommend this movie. It has left deep scars in my heart - both in a positive and a negative way, and I look forward to the year of 2022 when the last and final film in the series possibly taking the toll.
Regissören (2011)
A strange ending to an anthology from Sweden
Regissören is the third and final chapter of Ronny Carlsson's film anthology. This is a film that plays with ideas about Ronny's previous films. Here we meet a narcissistic character who becomes mentally affected by his own films. A film about Ronny as director, a film about his thought, structures and about how he sees himself and the films he directs. This is Ronny's very own mockumentary, a very different (and in some cases severe) but it's a fair ending to a perfect anthology .
This may be the best looking film in the series, but for me it was really difficult to summarize the whole. I needed to get a sensible explanation for that whatsoever manage to put the pieces in their proper place. Ronny might not have put the biggest driver on completing the series' historical perspective , but it's the editing that is Ronny's strongest feature - not to mention the fleshy impact on its cheap special effects. In doing so, it is apparent that he was pretty damn tired of working with " Experimental Films From The Lens of a Shitty Camcorder" and the camera used for these recordings is probably Ronny's greatest enemy today - so it was good to his own advantage to complete the anthology so abruptly.
What's so clear is the evident in this film series and how Ronny likes to experiment with sound, light and flickering. This can produce epilepsy - so if you are extremely sensitive to light; my tip is to avoid it. To my great joy Ronny uses various material things that bring out the film's strong symbolism. For example, at the beginning of the movie Ronny sitting in front of a roaring television screen and inject an antenna cable in the arm. This symbolizes a visual heroin syringe that says that what you see on TV / Film will adversely affect you mentally.
Regissören takes its own turns when it comes to the offense. One moment you see the director torturing someone to death , and the next moment the person he recently murdered, still are live. Or maybe it's just something that sits deep in his sick mind? I believe that this film, like many of his other films, is open to their own reflections - that everyone has the opportunity to inspect and prepare their own perceptions. Personally I believe Ronny was influenced by his two previous films and live himself into the character he created for "Video Geisteskrank " and "My Monster ". Ronny becomes the character, Ronny becomes the killer, Ronny performs as a murder, Ronny fall in love with the victim and chased by the ghost.
I think it's very difficult to put a review on this movie. I love Ronny's films but I think I have to give "Regissören" a little more leeway and see it a number of times to form the newer conceptions , find more pieces of the puzzle and speculate deeply about the big picture. Possibly this review will be reformulated at time, but as it looks now it's very messy in my head - or maybe it's just in this way it should be? you will experience the movie in bewilderment characters? The answer will come in its time.
My Monster (2009)
Don't forget how painful love really is!
This is the sequel to Ronny Carlsson earlier movie "Video Geisteskrank". In this movie things start to look more serious than before. Love has no borders and our "monster" has now begun to realize how painful love really can be dealing with.
Again Ronny playing with the spectator. Everything becomes much more alarming than before and you will end up in an epileptic condition, like an LSD trip. Mixed with self-mutilation and torture, it takes a while to understand the film's red wire! But towards the end put it like a fly in the dirt.
There are some unforgettable scenes from this film that really is brilliant, I also think Ronny Carlsson is very alone with this piece of art. My Monster deserves a gold star.
