Girl Fever (2002)

Hit-or-miss, to say the least.
25 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I went into this movie knowing that I've seen both Eight Days a Week and 100 Girls in succession and liking both of them; unfortunately, I was taken aback when I saw this movie.

First of all, the formula for this kind of movie was tampered with: usually, you have a reluctant hero who just happens to be attracted to one girl. In Eight Days a week, the love interest was Erica (played by the talented and beautiful Keri Russel), in 100 girls, we didn't know at first, but it later turned out to be Patty (played by yet another cinematic stunner, Emanuelle Chriqui.) In this one, we were all tripped up, me included.

Secondly, I was used to seeing Johnny Green as the main dick-weed antagonist. That's all I have to say.

Lastly, sure I understood the message: that we men need women to truly become reformed versions of ourselves, but it was done so disgustingly.

In summation, it was just a lesser version of its predecessor and nothing more.

This movie wasn't terrible, but it wasn't very good. It's worth a 6 out of 10.

It wasn't terrible, but the original is always the best.

I've officially watched all three HSM movies in succession and I've given a review to the first two: it's now time for me to evaluate this one.

Knowing my love of musicals, I went into this with an open mind. I can honestly say that this wasn't as good as the first, but not as bad as the previous; it was split right down the middle.

It did have its flaws, (I of course have to put at the forefront the repetition of many of the musical numbers, which was my only main gripe.) but it did have its redeeming qualities. (The story was OK, and not at all hard to follow, and the way it wrapped up was fairly decent.) If you watched this and were hoping for true cinematic greatness, it wasn't, but if you were also thinking it'd be as horrific as "Gigli," you'd be mistaken too. It was nothing more than just a light fluff that everybody can enjoy.

HSM3: Senior Year gets a respectable 8 out of 10

Everyone should see this.
5 June 2009
Even if you've never been into this genre, or movies directed by the Coen Brothers, there's no denying that this movie is a must-see for everybody.

Now, some would argue that in order to fully understand and enjoy this film you'd have to be stoned, but even if you're completely sober you're still going to find this funny in some aspect; I should know, I watched this at least 10 times and it is hilarious! Not only is this movie funny, but it's also very quotable. I challenge anyone to find a person that can't quote one portion of the movie and have someone else know what they're talking about. It's THAT quotable.

Now for the verdict: The Big Lebowski gets a 10 out of 10.

This shows just how far metal-heads will go for a good concert.
10 April 2009
I've known a lot of people like the members of the fictitious MATMOK that'd label bands like KISS as "demonic," and every one of them are all insane.

This movie is not for them.

This movie is, however, for all of us that will go through absolute hell to see a killer concert, but this movie isn't just about the music; it's about being able to put your foot down and say, "if you don't like the stuff I do, you can just eat it!" Now, I'm no psychiatrist, but if I were, I'd say that Jam's mother had some repressed sexual desires. Did you see how she practically ate that priest's hand when she tried to kiss it out of respect? In any case, this movie is perfect for the rebellious rocker in all of us.

Well worth the price of admission
4 April 2009
I went into this movie alone knowing only what I know thanks to the trailers on TV, and considering it was such a small crowd, I was kind of worried.

Good news, though: it was actually funny and fun to watch.

They said that it was "this year's Juno," which I find a bit concerning because this wasn't as heavy.

The characters are likable, the story was decent and reasonably new, and there was no shortage of heart.

For these reasons, I actually liked this.

The only drawback was that it seemed that it concluded way too neatly; other than that, it was a pretty good movie.

The verdict: this definitely a 9 out of 10.

Golf doesn't get any funnier
30 March 2009
Aside from Caddyshack, I don't think that a golf movie has ever made me laugh as hard as I did when this came out, and that's saying something.

Contrary to what the DVR may say about this movie, it's actually worth watching all the way to the end; it's one of those movies where you don't have to think too hard to appreciate it.

Admittedly, all the networks that play this edited don't do it justice; Of course, that's the case with most movies on network TV. Stay away from them.

If I could mention any flaws with this movie, it'd be what I just mentioned above. Other than that, this was a very well-made movie.

A movie that is not to be missed by anyone.
27 February 2009
It's been years since I've seen this movie all the way through, but it was worth it to see it on TV Land only a few nights ago.

Being neither a nerd or jock myself back in the day, I still understand the idea of taking down tormentors like the Alpha Betas.

The jokes are absolutely timeless, considering that 80's comedies never really go out of style.

Everyone can identify with this movie and that is one of the reasons why it's so memorable and so quotable.

The other reason being that everybody loves a good underdog comedy... there's no other way to say it.

Now for one of my verdicts: this movie is an absolute 10 out of 10

The movie outdoes the books!
22 November 2008
First, let me just say that for the longest time I've had the biggest vampire fixation, and even knowing that the books sort of left me cold, there was practically no way to stop me from seeing this movie.

I was even skeptical to bring my friend along to see it, but in any case, we did and we loved it! The plot translated very well to screen, (I loved the baseball scene.) the effects were decent, and the fight scene between Edward and James kept me in suspense. (Sorry to all you fan-girls out there, but it has to be said: in a stunning upset, the movie was better than the book.) The cast choice was interesting. The look of the characters actually surprised me; that goes double for Carlisle; he looked younger than I had pictured.

As always, the romantic aspect was a draw to me. I think we can all relate to Bella's situation: wanting someone that could possibly be harmful to us.

the only disappointment I can name is that the ending didn't exactly match up. Didn't Edward leave Bella in the first book? Anyway, on with my verdict. I give Twilight a 9 out of 10.

Another narrative masterpiece from Michael Davis
19 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed watching this movie for several reasons.

Firstly, (and let's get this out of the way right now) it was written by the same person that gave us "Eight Days a Week," another narrative classic which gives guys like me hope.

Second, it delves into not only the male frame of mind, but also takes us into the other side of the spectrum and shows us how women think about men.

This time around, we have a different character: Matthew, who, during a blackout on a college campus, has a sexual encounter with an unknown girl in an elevator. Unfortunately, when he comes to in the elevator, the only thing that can connect him to said unknown girl is her panties.

Just like "Eight Days a Week," Matthew also has a friend with an absurd quirk. (Think Peter's friend with an even more disgusting prop.) I've noticed in these movies that the narrator has such vivid descriptions of their objectives or possible threats... it's like there's something even I could stand to brush up on.

Finally, I love how it all ties together. I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it, so I'll just leave you all with this: anyone who sees Michael Davis movies will become obsessed with Michael Davis.

Really fun to watch
18 October 2008
As many people know, I'm a HUGE anime fan, and I especially have a thing for harem anime like this.

In any case, the story does it's job well: advancing the story while simultaneously providing some (very excellent) fan service here and there.

The aspect of forbidden love was also a major factor in why this show has the audience it does. Everybody loves that classic angle... and if not, there's something seriously wrong with you.

It also helps that Negi and his students have such distinct personalities; from Nodoka's quiet and shy nature to the child-like spunkiness of the Narutaki Twins, Fuka and Fumika.

This is sure to be a pleaser to many an anime fan! 10/10

Impressive as always
18 October 2008
Being an avid Spider-fan, I took a liking to this movie without question.

This time around, the subject matter is totally different; it deals more with the choices we make and what true heroism is: giving up what we want most in exchange for something much more important.

The fight scenes were, in their own right, pretty good. Unfortunately, they can never outshine the scenes of their predecessor, so I shave a few points off for that.

In the end, I think this movie alone can teach all of us about the lost concept of self-sacrifice and at the same time, give us all an excellent movie-watching experience.

Good, but for Spidey fans, kind of predictable
22 September 2008
I just saw this movie just this morning, and speaking as a true Spider-fan, I can say that it was good, but just like spider sense, I sort of saw things coming.

I can't understand why people trash this movie so much. The fight scenes were fun to watch, the dialog was OK, and I have to say that the whole revenge theme kind of stood out... these movies have a way of teaching a little something to the audience without talking down to them, and that's part of why I like them so much.

And last year when everyone had a fit with the eight-second flag shot, I don't know what the problem was, but it certainly had no effect on me.

All in all, this is a pretty decent movie. You'll like it.

Horrid
10 September 2008
I watched this last night with my sister and her fiancée, and it's true what they say: "Great minds think alike." My sister and I hated it.

I may live in Texas, but I'm not as intolerant as Will Ferell's character; I'm practically offended.

Let me just say that there was nothing redeemable about this movie. It was just pure stupidity with more of the same thrown in for good measure.

It, along with "Reality Bites," should be driven out to the middle of the desert and buried... it's that bad.

Thank you Adult Swim!
5 September 2008
I may not have grown up around the time of Johnny Quest, but I clearly see the subtle jabs at the series (which are numerous) and I can't help but laugh.

At first glance, I admit I didn't initially understand a lot of this series; but let's face it, how can anyone understand a series at first- glance? You have to watch further... which is what I did.

The storyline is great, the characters are well put together and (aw hell, I better just say it or it'll back up on me)... Brock Sampson kicks major ass! Time has taken its toll on Adult Swim, but this definitely stands the proverbial test of time.

One more thing: GO TEAM VENTURE!

Very cool, not to mention educational
5 September 2008
I had never heard of this until a few weeks ago. Someone on Yotube mentioned it and I had to see for myself if it was any good; let me just say that I was pleasantly surprised.

I really enjoy this show. Not only does the show entertain, but after the episode finishes, we, the viewers, get to learn a little something about bugs and other creatures.

It's extremely rare that a cartoon like this comes along that both kids and adults can enjoy.

this is definitely a favorite.

Vigilante justice at its best
25 August 2008
I've always had a thing for underrated movies, and this was one for the ages.

I can honestly say that if you mess with someone's stuff and don't intend to pay for your wrongdoings, you'd better know how to cover your ass. (Appearantly, Mr. Pyatt didn't have the common sense to realize that.) I've only seen this movie just this year, but I didn't have to learn something about payback and justice by your own hands, that's been my stand for years on end. This movie also has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard, mostly due in large part to Pat Benatar's "Invincible." The only real flaw in this movie that I can name is that the plot's just a little on the hard-to-follow side; if nothing else, this movie was great to watch.

Now for the verdict: 9 out of 10.

Oh, and one more thing: Fair is fair!

Prom Night (I) (2008)

Wow... this might have been the worst crap I've ever seen in my life.
23 August 2008
The good news is that I didn't have to pay good money to see this in theaters; the bad news is that I actually bothered to wait until DVD release to see it.

I tried to watch this just last night, hoping for something remotely scary, or at least something different: in the end, I was sorely disappointed as I got neither.

The acting was laughable, the plot was absolutely predictable, and having not seeing the original, this may have ruined it for me.

This movie makes me wonder where the horror genre is headed, and if it's anywhere within this movie's direction, I'd say it's going to die a slow, painful death.

Verdict: 0/10

Wedding Peach (1995–1996)

What's not to love about this series?
21 August 2008
I'll admit. I didn't see much in this series when first heard about it; of course, after they showed the first episode on the Anime Network, I saw the synopsis and was drawn in.

Many would argue (including me) that this has an eerie resemblance to another great bishojo anime, Sailor Moon; That being said, it doesn't mean that it's a bad series.

Momoko and her friends aren't too far from the aforementioned anime in that they both have a male counterpart to assist them against their foes, they both have a universe that traces back to different worlds, (The Angel world reminds me of the Moon Kingdom.) and as far as I'm concerned, through this series, I think every one of us could learn a thing or two about the power of love and enduring friendship.

Despite the obvious mirroring of these series, Wedding Peach is definitely a must-watch anime.

Queen Sized (2008 TV Movie)

Very uplifting.
21 August 2008
I saw this movie when it first came on in early 2008, and I have to say that this has got to be one of the most positive movies based on a true story I've ever seen.

Being the polar opposite of Nikki's character, I may not have known her plight, but I do know that there is no way a person should ever go through what Maggie did.

I have to say that this is a movie that everyone should see no matter your gender, body shape or age.

To me, it represents making a seemingly impossible impact, which is what Maggie did, despite the teasing and the backlash of her supporters.

It's rare, but my verdict is a 10 out of 10.

I like Snoop and all, but this was just painful.
7 August 2008
I knew this was going to be kind of ridiculous, and I was actually hoping for something along the lines of "Tales From the Crypt."

Unfortunately, I could only sit through one story without almost vomiting... even then, it was hard to sit there hoping for some decent acting.

Even the anime transitions weren't all that special, and I'm a huge anime fan.

I wasn't desperate for entertainment, I just wanted to see what this was all about.

What was Snoop thinking? 0/10

The 80's was the best era for movies, and this is proof.
7 August 2008
I've always been a firm believer in use of the basics, balance and standing up for yourself... this movie has these teachings and everyone who feels the same way should watch this movie.

For some reason, these "underdog story" kinds of films have always withstood the test of time. I know that reason: people can learn something from them... at least, those that follow deeper than what they see on the screen.

Not only can everyone learn from this movie, but part of what makes this movie so memorable is the fact that it's very quotable, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a movie from the 80's that you couldn't find a single memorable quote from.

I give this movie a solid 10 out of 10.

Another unforgettable 80's classic
26 July 2008
Not too many movies today can deliver a performance as brilliantly as this one... much less any other 80's movie.

Many of us have been in Ronald's shoes in high school: alone, trying desperately to fit in, and just being ever-so-slightly on the nerdy side; for those of that have, this is their movie.

This movie is not only entertaining in the fact that it's funny, but it also has a very useful message: if you want to be popular or at the very least be reasonably liked, the best thing to do is to be nothing but yourself.

I give this underrated favorite a 10 out of 10.

Oscar-worthy
19 July 2008
Musicals have always been a favorite of mine: from "Chicago" to "The Sound of Music," I've never been one to dismiss seeing one.

This light-hearted little gem of a movie looked very promising in previews and didn't disappoint on screen. The cast couldn't have been chosen better, even knowing that the critics had their say; saying that it was a "muddled performance." (Whatever that was supposed to mean.) There was the little matter of who originally fathered Sophie, but other than that minor hitch in the plot line, I think this movie more than lived up to its Broadway counterpart.

I give this movie a 9 out of 10.

Not a bad movie at all.
14 July 2008
Most people would just write a movie like this off as a waste of time. As for me, I actually gave this one a shot and watched 'til the very end.

I've gotta say that this is definitely a step up from the last ABC Family movie I watched, and that was three years ago: no lame stereotypes, no horrid acting, and it was very much how you would picture (no pun intended) a father-daughter relationship... the ending couldn't have been any better either... oh, and let's not forget that two cast members of Degrassi were also in this movie... that's good too.

My only real problems came in the form of the insufferable antagonists... other than that, this was very well done.

On to my trademark verdict: I give it a modest 8 out of a possible 10.

Another cinematic great
26 June 2008
It's been a really long time since I'd seen an actual good movie, and for me to pass up a classic like this would not only go against my principles, but it might as well be a mortal sin.

There are many reasons to like this movie... and not just because it's based on a Stephen King novel, but also because it practically mirrors a time in all our lives. That, and because narrative movies have always fascinated me.

The only real disappointment is that these kinds of movies tend to have the same problem: they're not as lengthy as many people would like.

I shouldn't have to even give one of my verdicts, but it's a specialty of mine.
