Tony (I) (2009)
7/10
Hidden Gem
16 December 2018
It's grim, it's pointless and there's no real narrative yet, surprisingly, it still works.

We are invited to spend a small amount of time watching the life of Tony, a lonely serial killer. The feel of an inner city council estate is spot on and sense of isolation and self neglect is conveyed with fine detail.

Things do happen but like I said before there is no real narrative. I can't quite place it but for some reason you still watch to the end. It's not going to be everybody's cup of tea so watch with an open mind and don't expect any questions to be answered.

Europa Report (2013)

A stroll into space
19 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is a slow paced documentary style look at a mission to Europa. People start to die one by one for various reasons and we look in on the drama from the perspective of CCTV and hand held cameras. The pace of the film is very pedestrian but it kind of makes you relax as you watch it. Imagine watching big brother without everyone trying to kill each other.

It's not a great movie but I was still interested enough to watch all the way to the end ( I didn't think too much of the ending but I'll let you decide for yourself.) The acting is good even though there's not much character development. But to be honest the film-makers get away with this.

Worth a look but you'll probably forget about it in a few months.

Poor Effort
11 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Poor character development and a worn out storyline make this a very forgettable film. I really didn't care who or when the next death would be. I probably wouldn't mind as much if at least one of the characters had been an annoying ass but it seems everyone was a hero, which ends up making nobody the hero.

I had no sense of dread from the alien invaders. In fact, if they had changed the aliens to an invading human army I think the film would have worked better. For all the special effects, the aliens might have well been cardboard cut-outs. It wouldn't have made them less interesting.

I came away from the cinema feeling like i had just watched a rather long advert for the marine enlistment division.

Inception (2010)
4/10
Nothing New
3 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This film starts out dull and very rarely ventures away from this state. 'People in dreams' has been done before and is usually just a reason for showing of clever visual effects. Inception is no exception.

The recruitment of a new architect is a joke. Draw me a maze that takes me 2 minutes to solve. Fail, Fail, Fail hang on a minute how about a circular maze. Genius your in.

I don't completely hate this film but it could have been so much better. It could have been a great action film or a great drama piece. It tried to be both and managed neither.

And finally, is he still dreaming at the end?.... Who cares.

Battle for Terra (I) (2007)

Worst CG film in a long time
11 April 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this film thinking I might have found an unknown gem. Now I know why I had not heard of it before.

A human crash lands on an alien world after abducting several inhabitants. He is then rescued by one of the aliens, who's own father has been abducted. She takes him back to her home and creates on oxygen bubble in which he can survive. within the space of about two days the human is prepared to wipe out his own race for the love/ friendship of the alien.

The basic message behind this film is that treason is good. We are expected to side with an alien nation even though it would mean the end of our own race.

Characters are poorly rendered and the aliens are so ugly I couldn't wait for them to be wiped out. I was actually happy when they seemed to be losing the final battle. And why do aliens that can float need gliders to travel outside the city?

Unfortunately the aliens survive after the traitor flies his fighter into the only machine that can create a breathable atmosphere for the humans (actually the aliens have another way of doing this but the traitor doesn't know that.)

This is some kind of poorly made rip off of Enemy Mine. (maybe that's why Dennis Quaid is in it!)Don't bother with this animation, it's a waste of time. Or see it so you can find out how not to make a CG movie.
